FA close to sealing England v USA clash
By Rod Gilmour

David Beckham could become closer to sealing his much-anticipated 100th international cap for England with a friendly against the USA at Wembley.

State of the game: Kieran Richardson goes flying during England's friendly against USA in 2005
The FA is believed to be close to finalising an agreement for the proposed match on May 28 while talks with US soccer chiefs have reached an advanced stage, with the match looking likely to get the go-ahead.

Another friendly is also in the pipeline with England expected to play a friendly in the Caribbean against Trinidad and Tobago in early June.

If the FA seal the USA match, it would inevitably lead to speculation that David Beckham would play for England, as well as raising the profile of the match in the States.

If Beckham is not picked by Fabio Capello, the England manager, for the friendly against France in Paris later this month then the USA match in May would be the next opportunity for the Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder to win his 100th cap.

Capello said recently that Beckham - who failed to make the squad for England's friendly against Switzerland in February - would be part of his plans if he is match fit and playing well.

The France game takes place before the start of the Major League Soccer season so Beckham will only have had pre-season matches under his belt.

The last time England played the USA was in a friendly at Soldier Field in Chicago, in May 2005.

Kieran Richardson, now at Sunderland, scored both goals for England and Clint Dempsey, currently playing for Fulham, scored for the home side.

This is a tough stretch for the United States; I hope they have the legs to keep up with England, Spain and then Argentina in the span of a week and a half.

2-1 win for the U.S. tonight --- I honestly don't care who wins though. I just want the U.S. to continue to put some quality outings together and see the young guys (Bradley and the lot) continue to build towards something, and build some momentum for WCQ. But if the boys do win at Wembley, I definitely wouldn't mind seeing that.

1' Match underway at Wembley!

1' Rooney chases the ball into the left channel and wins a throw, unselfishly from the man Fabio Capello told to me more selfish.

2' Beckham with a header that almost plays Defoe in but Pearce is in there to shepherd it back to Howard.

3' Cherundolo and Gerrard clash accidentally and the USA right-back is down injured.

5' Defoe with a flicked header to turn into space and play Rooney clean through but the flag is up for offside.

6'Bocanegra fouls Rooney but England make a pig's ear of clearing the ball and Dempsey could break but his first-touch is heavy and England clear.

7'Pearce wins a free-kick on the USA left but England clear, Defoe races away, one-two with Rooney but the through-ball is intercepted.

8' Hargreaves gives away a needless free-kick in the centre of the park, the USA now have a throw on the right and play the ball around neatly but Cherundolo's cross is too high for Beasley.

9' Bradley clatters into Beckham on the England right but the hosts cannot do anything with it and the USA clear.

10' A couple of strong aerial challenges from the American defenders but fair, according to the referee, and they look long to complete the clearance.
