11' Good play by Gerrard and Cole to release Gerrard, who goes flying over on the left and Clark is furious that England won a free-kick there as Gerrard clearly tripped over himself. Beckham swings the ball far post and Rooney scores but the ref had already blown to stop Beckham from taking it quickly.

12' Beckham sends the second effort in low and flat and everyone leaves it as the ball flies just wide! Another good delivery but no-one was quick-thinking enough to attack it.

13' Defoe is again played in by a Gerrard header but offside again.

15' Rooney almost bursts through on the counter but out-of-work ex-Fulham defender Carlos Bocanegra gets in the way.

17' Great skill by Rooney to escape two USA defender, he wins a free-kick which England spread wide right.

18' Beckham has the ball on the edge of the box and tries a snap-shot but it flies over!

20' England almost play themselves into a scoring opportunity on the edge of the area.

22' Beckham with a high arm but he gets away with that.

23' Mistake from Pearce and Rooney sprints down the right, he's in loads of space and Defoe is free but Rooney looks for Gerrard on the edge of the area but just behind him and the shot is blocked.

24' Cole wins a free-kick on the left which Beckham will take. He drills it low to the edge of the box and GERRARD but blocked and the rebound falls to him but it bobbles wide! Another good chance for England who are tearing the USA apart now.

25' The USA come forward on a rare attack and Johnson is on the right, he cleverly stands it far post for Bradley but a great flicked header from Brown to nick it away from him.

26' The fans have started booing purely because the US have strung two attacks together. Maybe they want the ball to spend its entirety in the US half? Maybe the US haven't qualified for five consecutive World Cups? Maybe the US didn't draw with winners Italy in the last one? Maybe they're not actually quite good?

27' The USA have another chance, a free-kick on the left but it is wasted.

29' Brown gives the ball away, Clark feeds Pearce but his cross is poor.

30' Pearce tries another cross which takes a touch off Hargreaves and is easy for James. Rooney now wins a free kick just inside the USA half. England go backwards but, in keeping with Capello's mantra from England, the purpose is to keep the ball.

31' Defoe is played in but he's penalised for a foul on Onyewu, who is playing at centre half.

33' Free-kick to the USA on the right, sent over looking for Johnson but Rooney gets a head on it to flick clear.

34' England break after a superb Rooney ball to Gerrard on the left who slips it across to DEFOE WHO MUST SCORE BUT HE PUTS IT WIDE! Great play by the Scouse pair but a poor finish.

35' Rooney again in space on the left and he gets around Cherundolo, Onyewu slides in but it comes off Rooney for a goal kick.

37' Clark fouls Brown and Beckham has a free-kick on the right. Beckham swings it over and Terry flies in with a header into the bottom right for 1-0! Well that's nice for Terry after his Moscow hell.

39' The USA have a spell of what can only be called bitty pressure but England eventually get it clear.

40' Great play Gerrard to play Cole through on the left, he cuts it back for Defoe who could be in but he's fouled just as he pulls the trigger on the edge of the box. Free-kick England, Beckham, Lampard and Gerrard over it.

41' Gerrard has a shot but straight into the wall, Beckham wins it back for England but eventually they lose it. Beckham again pops up on the left to clip a clever ball for Lampard but Hargreaves sends the long-range shot well over.

42' Long from Cole over the top and Defoe is in, great control but he panics and lashes the ball over. He just seems to bottle it for England.

43' Defoe almost played in on the right again, stretching the USA, but Clark slides in and it's a throw.

44' A glorious ball again from Beckham to Defoe on the left but Cherundolo hauls Defoe down on the edge of the box, free-kick and a card.
