U-20s Shut Down Argentina, Win 1-0
6/11/05 1:10 PM
ENSCHEDE, Netherlands (June 11, 2005) - Jonathan Spector went off with a leg injury in the 38th minute and Freddy Adu missed a second half penalty kick, and the U.S. still topped four-time FIFA World Youth Champions Argentina 1-0. Chad Barrett scored the game-winner in the 39th minute.
The U.S. goal game on a build up started by Sturgis, who played the ball wide left to Hunter Freeman. Freeman touched the ball back to the center to Greg Dalby, who pushed forward and found Marvell Wynne on the right side wide open. Wynne's cross was deflected high by the shin of a recovering defender, but still had enough pace to find Barrett at the back post where he was able to head the ball straight down and into the goal.
In the second half the U.S. has a chance for a 2-0 lead when Adu drew a penalty despite the fact he was dribbling away from goal in the top right corner of the penalty area. Adu stepped up to take it, but his firm, left footed roller charomed off the right post and back out of the area.
Spector went off after three consecutive physical confrontations left him limping noticably. Also of note, Argentina did not start FC Barcelona 18-year-old Lionel Messi. Messi came on in the second half and showed brilliant moments, including a pair of shots in the area that were saved by Quentin Westberg.
The U.S. next faces Germany on Tuesday, June 14 at 2:30 p.m. ET live on Fox Soccer Channel and ussoccer.com's MatchTracker, presented by Philips Electronics.

Does anybody know why Szetela didn't start or get more playing time? This kid is special and can really control the midfield. Marvell Wynne win impressed me very much and Hunter Freeman scares the $h!t out me. Hope this was just a bad game because the kid looked awful. Adu played good and like argentina's Lionel Messi had moments of brilliance. Gaven was abit of a disappointment, he's played so well in MLS this year that I was expecting more.

Completely agree with all of this. I think if Messi had gotten the start, it may have been a different outcome though. Freeman was terrible.

Maybe but while the US got a good win, IMO they didn't play that well. Losing Spector early hurt especially with the way Freeman played. remember Spector is one of the best players in this tourny. But the midfield played awful, know one could hold the ball to do any creating leaving everything to counter-attacks and longballs. IMO if the US had Szetela out there to gain some control it would have helped Gaven out greatly. Gaven was never really put in a position yestaerday to use his skills becaue they could never get him the ball.
