CHICAGO (AP) -- D.C. United's Bobby Convey and Santino Quaranta were picked Thursday for the U.S. roster for the FIFA World Youth Championship, but Freddy Adu was not.

Eight players from Major League Soccer were selected for the 20-man roster for the tournament, to be played in the United Arab Emirates from Nov. 27-Dec. 19.

Mike Magee and Ricardo Clark were picked from the MetroStars, Ed Johnson and Jordan Stone from Dallas, Justin Mapp from Chicago and Arturo Alvarez from San Jose.

The tournament is limited to players under 20. Coach Thomas Rongen had said he would bypass the 14-year-old Adu, who starred earlier this year at the FIFA Under-17 World Championship.

Among those selected were defender Zak Whitbread, who is with Liverpool, and midfielder David Johnson, with Willem II Tilburg in the Netherlands. Half the roster played for the Americans at the 2001 Under-17 championship.

The United States plays three first-round game in Abu Dhabi, facing Paraguay (Nov. 29), Germany (Dec. 2) and South Korea (Dec. 5).

Defenders: Ryan Cochrane, Jordan Harvey, Craig Jared Klaas, Chad Marshall, Drew Moor, Jordan Stone, Zak Whitbread

Midfielders: Arturo Alvarez, Ricardo Clark, Bobby Convey, Clint Dempsey, Ned Grabavoy, David Johnson, Justin Mapp

Forwards: Knox Cameron, Ed Johnson, Mike Magee, Santino Quaranta.

It's not a good idea to rush the kid. Let him grow up a bit. Also give him a rest and don't push him into every tourney that comes along.

again we depend on a spanish channel to televise the games, hope the next step for the MLS Commissioner Garber his to get a Soccer channel

Soccer Phenom Chose United to Stay Close to Home

NEW YORK, Nov. 19 -- Freddy Adu spent a whirlwind day in Manhattan, being formally introduced as the newest addition to Major League Soccer, making television appearances and receiving a surprising invitation.

The day began with an MLS news conference at Madison Square Garden where the 14-year-old from Potomac wasted little time wowing a media throng at Madison Square Garden. A poised, confident Adu, without bothering to look at notes, thanked teammates, coaches and friends who have helped him rise to prominence after his family moved to Maryland from Ghana because it won an immigration lottery in 1997.

Adu ended his opening remarks today by pulling out the pen he used to sign his first pro contract and inviting his mother, Emelia, to the podium for a hug.

"I signed my first pro contract and it has all been because of you," he said to his mother. "Thank you. And I love you."

Adu later attributed his maturity to his family and the way his mother raised him and his younger brother, Fro, stressing education while she worked multiple jobs to make ends meet.

Adu said today that he and his family chose to sign with MLS and play for D.C. United instead of European suitors because of the proximity to his home, the league's track record of developing young players and the fact that he can be accessible to the U.S. national team.

"I made this decision because I have faith in MLS," Adu said. "I know they are going to treat me right. I just felt like this was the right place for me to be right now. . . . I have all the trust in the world in MLS."

The news conference was followed by an ESPN interview. Adu and his family were then taken by limousine to the Ed Sullivan Theater for the taping of his "Late Night With David Letterman" appearance. While stepping out of the limo, U.S. Coach Thomas Rongen called to tell him he was being invited to play with the Under 20 U.S. national team in the World Youth Championships in the United Arab Emirates. If he opts to play, Adu will fly to the UAE on Monday from Los Angeles.

Adu signed a six-year deal with MLS on Tuesday and will eventually land with D.C. United. Many soccer observers expected Adu and his family to ignore the overtures of the eight-year-old U.S. league and sign with one of two aggressive English Premier League suitors: Manchester United or Chelsea.

"When you put all of the factors together it became a fairly obvious choice," Adu's agent, Richard Motzkin, said today.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber began the proceedings today by calling this "one of the most monumental days in the history of soccer in the United States."

Adu becomes the latest sports phenom to play in the Washington area. Two years ago the Washington Wizards drafted high school player Kwame Brown with the No. 1 overall pick and teamed him with legend Michael Jordan. The Washington Freedom signed soccer standout Mia Hamm and the Washington Capitals brought in star forward Jagomir Jagr. But Brown has been a disappointment and Hamm has produced the only league championship in the group -- and her league folded soon thereafter.

Professional teams increasingly seek younger and younger players and sign them more on potential than established success. The most prominent example at the moment is NBA rookie LeBron James, who was drafted No. 1 out of high school by the Cleveland Cavaliers this spring and plays at MCI Center tonight against the Wizards.

Despite Adu lacking a professional resume, the pursuit of the teenager was a half-year saga in which clubs from around the world sought him. By age 11, Adu had received an offer from Italian club Inter Milan and he already has drawn comparisons to Pele and attracted large crowds while representing the Unites States at youth events in South Korea, Finland and Guatemala. Adu, who skipped a grade in middle school and is on an accelerated academic program, is expected to join D.C. United fulltime after he graduates from high school in May. He trains and resides in Bradenton, Fla., with the U.S. under-17 national team.

Adu Replaces Alvarez on U.S. Soccer Team

(CHICAGO) Fourteen-year-old Freddy Adu was chosen Wednesday to replace injured San Jose Earthquakes player Arturo Alvarez on the U.S. Under-20 men's national team when it competes in the FIFA World Youth Championship.

Coach Thomas Rongen said the team was disappointed to lose Alvarez, but it was clear he would not be fully recovered from a groin injury in time for the tournament Nov. 27-Dec. 19 in the United Arab Emirates.

Adu, who is from Maryland, said earlier Wednesday he had signed a contract with Major League Soccer and will be eligible for the 2004 draft.

He has been playing with the U.S. Under-17 team and led it in scoring this season with 19 goals. He was second last season with 22.
