I agree. But still it boggles my mind that the U.S. has improved to the point where they can even be mentioned in the same breath as the Italians, French, Germans, etc., much less be ranked ahead of them by FIFA. But you know what? I never thought something like this would come out of my mouth, but I am beginning to think that the U.S. has a legitimate shot at winning the World Cup in 2010. It's crazy. I shouldn't even be thinking it. But I look at some of the young guys coming up like Eddie Johnson, Beasley and before long Freddie Adu. Damned if those guys can't play! It's going to be interesting to see how things pan out. I'll still always consider Brazil the favorite, but I think by 2010 the U.S. will have as good a chance as just about anyone. Weird.

Beasley was at the last one and I didn't see anything special about him then.

He was 19, I'd think he's gotten better since...

Then why did we beat Portugal in the last World come and why did we outplay Germany and only not beat them because of a bad ref?

In one off matches, I can see it. However if the US had to qaulify in Europe, and play European competition, then they would have a much tougher go.
Lets face it, other than Mexico, their is nobody else.
Lets be honest, I think Portugal is better than the US at the moment. That is not a unfair comment.
The US is continuing to become a power, however I'm not sure they have the "dynamic" to win a WC or challeng the best. They are still not a soccer nation.

Just let me add, I don't want to see the US become great at football. You dominate enough sports already...take that as a compliment.

We beat their national team and our club teams beat their clubs teams when they plat, am I missing something?
Also why does everyone think the US rankings are always ridiculous and not comment on Mexico, who we happen to have a winning record against under Arena.

Club teams..... come and bring your club teams to the San Siro during the CL play, then we'll see what your made of. Friendlies are not a good barometer for judging where the US or US clubs are.
Lastly, please don't take offense to this, but I actually think the US are very good. Dino Zoff was commented on this, saying the US could become a superpower, however I think the timing was off.
In terms of beating Portugal the country, not saying the US is inferior, I just think the Portugese have more talent, and that "dynamic" that I said earlier...as most big European countries seem to possess.
For the record, I don't want the Azzurri to be grouped with the US.

Don't get me wrong, MLS is not up to EPL, Serie A or La Liga, but I'd argue it's as good or better then Portugal's top division as proven by several friendlies against some of their top teams.
Dave made a good arguement on another board, so I won't still it, wait till he posts it.
And if you don't want the Azzuri grouped with the US, I don't want Canada grouped with the US.

I followed that by the way. Your opinions are well stated. I also don't put much stock in club friendlies. Not saying they are not a measuring stick at all -- I don't think that's the case either. I think they can give us some portion of a barometer.
I rather look for what visiting players have to say. Such as the very nice comments made by Real Madrid. That speaks volumes to me. As fans we are passionate, but quite frankly the players are much better qualified to judge IMHO.

To add no one from Madrid was gushing over the MLS and claiming that it was a superior league, but they also made it clear that it is probably better than generally given credit for.

Not doubt about that, I think people are just disputing the rankings, that's all. The US have a strong soccer team, and the MLS is growing. I for one want the league to get bigger, so my Whitecaps can join some time in the future.
The league will grow in the states, the fact that Mexicans are becoming the dominant minority, and they love footie, not too mention games from Europe are easier to come by.
