Time to fire Bruce. Why put out Owneyu and Berhalter in Center defense when they'd never played together there before?

* BEST OF THE WEB: Sweet Home Alabama

"The U.S. National Team has essentially stopped scheduling games in Southern California and other areas with sizable Hispanic populations, which have tended to cheer for their countries of origin.

"The United States' most recent international matchups on home soil have happened in Columbus, Ohio, and New England. Other American sites scheduled for this round of qualifiers are June 4 at Salt Lake City; Aug. 17 in Hartford, Conn.; Sept. 3 at Columbus, Ohio; and Oct. 13 at a site to be determined.
"Birmingham's Hispanic population is 1.6 percent, according to the most recent Census data.

"'The reason we chose Birmingham as a venue is because we really believe every time we have been in Birmingham, it has been a pro-American crowd,' Arena said. 'That's not always the case in the United States.'"

Default USA v Panama WCQ

Standings going into tonight's matches

Team GP W L T GF GA GD Pts
MEX 4 3 0 1 7 3 +4 10
USA 4 3 1 0 8 3 +5 9
GUA 4 1 2 1 5 5 0 4
TRI 4 1 2 1 4 7 -3 4
CRC 4 1 2 1 3 6 -3 4
PAN 4 0 2 2 2 5 -3 2

Without seeming to insult the visitor from Panama (although we never heard from him again) this is a match that the US should get a positive result from.

Does anyone know if Ed Johnson traveled with the team for tonight's match?

Any thoughts on tonight's road match?

how many from that group go straight into the WC2006

do the top 2 go automatically into the WC or the top 1 and the 2nd has to qualify?

Top three go through. Fourth has a playoff against AFC for a slot. That resulted when they took away the promised automatic bid for the OFC winner.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING

"We've really put ourselves in a good position. We know we've still got a little bit of work to do. We're looking forward to the next game. It's a shame it doesn't come next weekend."
-- U.S. goalkeeper Kasey Keller after the USA's 3-0 win at Panama in World Cup qualifying. The Americans host Trinidad & Tobago in their next Hexagonal game Aug. 17. (Washington Post)

"We're the first team in this cycle to beat Panama at home. As critical as we are of our performances, getting a result like that is exceptional when no one else has been able to do it. The first goal was big; the second goal was terrific. The third goal killed the game."
-- U.S. coach Bruce Arena on the win over Panama, which had tied Mexico and Guatemala in its previous Hexagonal home games. (New York Times)

Good game Donovan solid again, Keller outstanding again, Ralston a beautiful cross and McB in the right place and took his chance good result in a tough stadium.
