an 89th minute equalizer doesn't really leave a lot of time to push for a winner.

Did Bruce Arena receive a "yellow" card in the 17th minute for arguing Convey's card?

I think he might have but I'm not sure.

if bruce played a halfway decent lineup and didnt go with "experience"... we might not have been put in that situation in the first place.
and besides france was down 1-0 to england in euro 2004 going into added time and pulled out a 2-1 victory... i know that it's france and it was a free kick just outside the box and a pk, but it can be done...

EUROPE and AFRICA: World Cup qualifying scores
"Look at the game for what it was. We got an early goal in the game that basically ends the game after five minutes because they weren't going to be able to generate many chances."
-- U.S. coach Bruce Arena on the 2-0 victory over El Salvador, a match filled with incidents and stoppages.
"We were losing 1-0, and to have one less man was very hard for me to accept that. I recognize that I made a mistake, but it was the moment. That was the way I felt during the game. That is the first time a ref has ever put me out of a game."
-- Juan Paredes, El Salvador head coach, on his ejection for dissent after one of his players was sent off (second yellow) in the 26th minute for wearing jewelry.

Road to U.S. team a grueling one
Defender goes from near-retirement to World Cup qualifier
JERE LONGMAN
New York Times
FOXBORO, Mass. - This was not what Kerry Zavagnin imagined for a career path. By 1999, he had walked away from Major League Soccer, confronted with a brutal self-examination: he was too unfit and immature to handle the demands of professional sport.
He next found himself in a developmental league, toiling in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania, which had no home field. At the worst times, the only place to play was a lumpy middle school turf.
In this career fog, though, Zavagnin found a clarity of intention. By 2000, his confidence restored, he returned to MLS with Kansas City. Four years later, Zavagnin started at defensive midfield for the United States in 2-0 win against El Salvador on Saturday in a World Cup qualifier.
Once, Zavagnin nearly retired in despair, but at 30, he is now a symbol of resolve and perseverance, a steady, durable professional in a position that is indispensable but often anonymous.
"Nothing's been given to him in his professional career," coach Bruce Arena said. "He's a tremendous communicator on the field ... And he's a pretty good passer, rarely loses the ball."
Zavagnin sat on the bench or played out of position at right back during his two seasons with the MetroStars in 1997 and 1998. He had more coaches (three) than seasons with the team. But he later realized the greatest problem was his insufficiency.
"I wasn't prepared physically or mentally to take on the challenges in New York," he said.
Finding no other team interested, he drifted out of MLS and contemplated retirement.
He finally washed ashore for the 1999 season in the A-League with the Lehigh Valley Steam. Still living in Kearny, N.J., Zavagnin commuted 90 minutes each way to practice and games. The site of home games changed from one week to the next.
"While I could do that when I was 10 years old, playing six games in one weekend, being a 25-year-old, it wasn't really appropriate for me," Zavagnin said.
Still, he practiced dutifully and got 25 games under his belt. His self-assurance returned with his fitness. He paid his way for an audition in Kansas City, which later drafted Zavagnin in 2000.
He said he told coach Bob Gansler he wanted a chance to start. Gansler returned Zavagnin to his most comfortable position in midfield. He was more fit then, having run six or more miles four days a week. That first season, Zavagnin helped anchor a defense that set a league record for shutouts and the Wizards won the MLS championship.
Arena called him up to the national team for a match against Mexico in 2000. After three years, Arena called again in December, then several times this year. Each time Zavagnin played solidly.
"No matter what happens from here on out, I'll be pleased with what I've done," Zavagnin said. "I proved it to myself and proved to people who said I couldn't do it."
