Barbieri's 4th game-winner lifts Monmouth
West Long Branch, N.J. -- Sophomore forward Chase Barbieri connected for his fourth game-winning goal this young season, 14 seconds into extratime, to boost the Monmouth University men to their third consecutive win with a 1-0 extratime triumph over Princeton on The Great Lawn Thursday.
After two consecutive Monmouth shots and saves from Princeton goalkeeper Joe Walter to begin to extratime, Barbieri (Hillsborough, N.J.) came in and one-touched the ball past Walter to give the Hawks (4-1-1) the win.
It was Monmouth's first win over the Princeton men (1-5).
“Chase continues to be in great form this season,” Monmouth coach Robert McCourt said. “This was important for us to find a way to get a win against a very good Princeton team.”
The Hawks controlled most of the tempo, outshooting the Tigers, 11-6. Barbieri controlled the ball to begin the overtime and played it ahead to Ryan Kinne (Naugatuck, Conn.), who fired a shot that was saved. Teammate Rob LaRocca (Holmdel, N.J.) came in and got a shot off that was also saved before Barbieri finished what he started and slotted home his fifth goal of the season.
Monmouth goalkeeper Bryan Meredith (Scotch Plains, N.J.) made two saves to log his fourth consecutive shutout, while Walter made five stops for the Tigers.
Monmouth hosts La Salle on The Great Lawn at 2 p.m. Sunday.
