CHARLOTTESVILLE - The No. 5 Virginia men's soccer team remained unbeaten on the young season, downing Richmond 2-0 Sunday night at Klöckner Stadium. Neil Barlow (McLean, Va.) and Chris Tierney (Wellesley, Mass.) each scored for the Cavaliers, who improved to 2-0-0 with the victory.

"I am pleased to get a win like this one," head coach George Gelnovatch said. "Today's game was different from Friday's in the sense that it was more physical. I think as we play against teams with different styles, it will only make us better. I thought that we managed the game well, and by getting the second goal, took away a chance for them to get back into the game on one set piece, since they are very good on those."

Virginia (2-0-0) took a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 27th minute of play. Barlow got a ball in the midfield, dribbled through several defenders into the box and placed a shot inside the far post for his first career goal. The Cavaliers added another goal in the 51st minute as Jeremy Barlow (McLean, Va.) sent a long ball to switch fields to Tierney, who used the open space on flank to dribble into the box and fire a shot into the net. It was Tierney's third goal of the season, already tying his career high for a year.

Virginia outshot Richmond 18-10 in the contest while the Spiders had a 7-6 corner kick advantage. Michael Giallombardo (Manalapan, N.J.) made four saves for Virginia to record his first shutout of the season. Eric Sciocchetti made six saves for Richmond.

Virginia travels to Texas this weekend for the SMU Mi Cocina Classic. The Cavaliers will meet No. 8 SMU on Friday before playing Tulsa on Sunday.

VIRGINIA 5-Columbia University-0

season opener
Virginia Men's Soccer Tops Columbia 5-0 in Season Opener :: Yannick Reyering and Chris Tierney each score twice

31, 2007

Box Score

CHARLOTTESVILLE - The Virginia men's soccer team got two goals each from Yannick Reyering (Mettingen, Germany) and Chris Tierney (Wellesley, Mass.) as it downed Columbia 5-0 in its season opener Friday night at Klöckner Stadium. With the victory, the fifth-ranked Cavaliers won their season opener for the fourth consecutive year.

"Tonight was a great way to open the season," head coach George Gelnovatch said. "The biggest difference tonight from Sunday (against South Florida) was we had a killer instinct. Instead of sitting on a 1-0 lead, we went out and got those second and third goals to put the game away. We now have to get ready for Richmond on Sunday."

It didn't take long for the Cavaliers (1-0-0) to take the lead, as Reyering scored 30 seconds into the game. He picked up a loose ball in the box on a rebound off of Neil Barlow's (Langley, Va.) shot and placed it into the empty net. Virginia added to the lead in the 35th minute when Jonathan Villanueva (Grand Prairie, Texas) sent a through ball to set up Jeremy Barlow (Langley, Va.), who was fouled in the box. Reyering converted the penalty to record his third career multi-goal game.

In the second half, the Cavaliers added to their lead in the 62nd minute as Tierney scored after a give-and-go from Jeremy Barlow. Tierney scored his second of the night off a cross from Ross LaBauex (Chicago, Ill.) in the 73rd minute for his first multi-goal game of his career. Matt Ayotte (Midlothian, Va.) finished the scoring in the 79th minute as he controlled a loose ball in the box and fired it past the keeper for Virginia's fifth goal.

Virginia outshot Columbia 22-3 in the contest and had a 4-2 corner kick advantage. Michael Giallombardo (Manalapan, N.J.) made one save for Virginia in 78 minutes of action, while Kyle Rudzinski (McLean, Va.) played the final 12 shutout minutes in the first action of his career. Michael Testa made eight saves for the Lions.

Virginia returns to action on Sunday as it hosts Richmond at 5 p.m. The game will follow the women's soccer team's match against West Virginia at 2 p.m.
