McCourt announces Monmouth recruiting class
Monmouth University men's soccer head coach Rob McCourt announced the addition of six student-athletes who will compete for the Blue and White starting this fall. The class, which includes two NSCAA All-Americans, features five from the state of New Jersey and the 2006 Connecticut State Player of the Year.
The Class of 2011 will join 16 returning letterwinners from a squad that won the NEC championship and advanced to the NCAA Regionals last season.
Signing national letters of intent to play with Monmouth are Chase Barbiere, Bryan Davis, Tony Dominguez, Ryan Kinne, Bryan Meredith, and Drew Von Bargen.
“I am excited to announce this year’s recruiting class,” said McCourt, the two-time NEC Coach of the Year. “The class brings players that are tremendous winners on the field and in the classroom. This group brings a wealth of experience on the field and that have won at high levels. These young men will be great compliments to our existing roster which has made record breaking strides for the Monmouth Men’s Soccer program.”
Barbiere, a forward, played club soccer with Team PDA Vieira and PDA Cantona, where he was a three-time New Jersey State Cup winner, and a regional finalist for PDA Cantona. Barbiere was also a second-team all-state honoree at Hillsborough.
“Chase is a tough aggressive forward,” McCourt said. “He comes from a solid club background and high school program. He is a feisty competitor, who brings character to the field.”
Davis, a defender, is a four-year member of the New Jersey State Olympic Development Program team. An all-state honorable mention player, Davis captained Voorhees to the sectional finals.
“Bryan is a strong athletic back that gives us added presence in the air," McCourt said. "He will add defensive strength and depth.”
Dominguez, a midfielder/forward, is an accomplished player from well-known Harrison High School and a product of a tremendous team with great history.
“Tony is a creative, attack-minded midfielder/forward," McCourt said. "He can change games by being unpredictable, yet is also a very hard worker.”
Kinne is an NSCAA All-American and the 2006 Connecticut State Player of the Year. A proven goal scorer, who netted 79 goals and 22 assists over his three years at Naugatuck High School, Kinne is also a Region 1 ODP and Connecticut State ODP player. He is also a member of the South Central Premier Soccer Club.
“Ryan is a crafty attacking midfield/forward player," McCourt said. "He has proven he can score goals and has done so at very high levels. He is expected to compete for a starting spot immediately.”
Meredith, a goalkeeper, is also an NSCAA All-American, who was the starting goalkeeper for the New Jersey State and Region I ODP teams from 2005-2007. He also competed for the PDA Socrates club, where he was the team captain from 2002 to 2007.
A four-year starter at Scotch Plains H.S., Meredith holds the school shutout record and is a two-time New Jersey first-team All-State selection and an invitee to the 2005 and 2006 adidas ESP Camp.
“Bryan brings a wealth of ability and experience,” McCourt said. “He is a solid keeper with a tremendous future ahead of him. Bryan is a leader and will be a great presence in the locker room.”
Von Bargen, a midfielder, played for New Jersey state high school champion, Shawnee, which earned national rankings of No. 1 and No. 4 during the season. An all-state selection, he played for the Club NJ Barons and competed in Super Y ODP and National Camp.
“Drew is a creative midfield player," McCourt said. "He is technical and creative, and will fit in well with our style of play. He is a product of great high school and club teams and is a winner.”
The Monmouth men’s soccer team, winners of back-to-back Northeast Conference regular season titles, and the 2006 NEC Tournament Championship, is on a 19-game league unbeaten streak, dating back to the 2005 season.
The Blue and White, which advanced to its first-ever NCAA Tournament this past fall, dropping a 1-0 decision at No. 9 St. John’s, finished 2006 with an overall record of 14-4-3, and a NEC mark of 7-0-2. The Hawks also earned their first national ranking, entering the field as high as No. 15 in the country by the NSCAA.
