Titans Fall in Men's Soccer Season Opener, 6-1
August 31, 2007
The UDM men's soccer team dropped a 6-1 decision in its opening game of the season to Cal State University Northridge (1-0) Friday afternoon at the Matador Soccer Field in Northridge, CA.
Northridge opened up the scoring in the fifth minute as junior midfielder Devin Deldo put it in the left side of the net for the Matadors. Sophomore goalkeeper Bryan Kloss tallied a save for UDM in the 11th minute off of CSUN junior forward May Gomez, but Gomez went on to retrieve his own rebound. His second attempt at the net made it past Kloss to put the score at 2-0 in favor of the Matadors.
Junior Simon Zahra took a corner kick for UDM in the 30th minute and redshirt freshman Jake Munchiando (pictured) played it off of his foot and watched it sail by Northridge junior goalkeeper Kevin Guppy for his first goal as a Titan.
CSUN junior forward Michael Clegg had a breakaway in the 39th minute and fed it to freshman midfielder Nicholas Hamilton who netted Northridge's final goal of the first half.
Northridge opened up scoring in the second half after sophomore forward Sunghyun Kim netted the Matadors' fourth goal off of a pass from Deldo. The next two goals for CSUN came from freshman forward Camilo Rojas, both in the 70th minute, with one of the goals being assisted by senior midfielder Fergie Agwu.
The Matadors outshot the Titans, 22-9, but UDM had a 3-2 advantage on corner kicks. Kloss tallied five saves on the afternoon, while allowing six goals and sophomore goalkeeper Rich Fatyma saw action for just over 18 minutes for UDM. Guppy allowed one goal and had three saves, while Peter Bomar tallied one save in just over 19 minutes.
The Titans will return to action when they face Cal State Fullerton on Sept. 2 at 5 p.m. EST in Fullerton, Calif.

Men's Soccer Edged by Cal State Fullerton, 1-0
September 2, 2007
UDM's men's soccer team played a hard-fought defensive game against Cal State Fullerton at Titan Stadium in Fullerton, CA, Sunday afternoon, but lost by a score of 1-0. With this loss, UDM falls to 0-2 on the year, while CSF improves to 2-0.
Just over a minute into the game, Fullerton's Michael Farfan took a corner kick and Amir Shafii headed it into the net to put the score at 1-0 for CSF.
In the 27th minute, CSF Skyler Thuresson shot a laser up the middle, but UDM sophomore goalkeeper Bryan Kloss grabbed one of his four saves of the afternoon. Detroit had a chance to tie it up in the 33rd minute as Mateusz Szwed fed a pass to Renato Susnja whose header went wide of the net.
Another chance for UDM came in the early in the second half as sophomore Michel Jonca had a breakaway, but he was tripped inside the box and no foul was called. Just a few minutes later, Ken Simon took a free kick and his attempt was high over the net.
Fullerton's Michael Farfan took a hard shot to the right corner of the net in the 70th minute, but Kloss was there to kick it out of the way and force an unsuccessful corner kick attempt for CSF.
With about 16 minutes left in the game, UDM freshman Chris Mulcahy took a shot to the center of the net, but Brent Douglas happened to be there for one of his three saves of the afternoon.
In the 75th minute, a CSF forward had one defender to beat, but Kloss ran up and had a slide tackle all the way at the top of the box to stop his attempt at the net. After that play, Kloss was hurt and sophomore Richard Fatyma came in at net for the remainder of the game.
With just under three minutes left, Ryan Kalor took a shot from about 30 yards out. Fatyma bobbled the ball and tried to keep his balance at the goal line and was able to keep the ball out of the net.
UDM's last attempt to tie the game came with just 10 seconds left in the game, as junior Christian King took a shot from the left side, but it was blocked by a CSF defender.
UDM will return to action when the Titans face Oakland in Rochester, MI, on Sept. 5 at 5 p.m.

Titans Vs. Alumni In Saturday's Soccer Doubleheader
August 24, 2007
Both Titan soccer teams are in action on Saturday at Bishop Gallagher Field when they host their alumni teams in a pair of exhibition contests.
The women's game will kick off at 12 noon, and the men will follow at 2:00 p.m.
The Titan women come off an exciting 2-2 draw at Central Michigan in their most recent exhibition contest.
UDM went up 1-0 on the Chippewas 20 minutes into the game as Trina Kochanski netted a goal off a pass from Liz Hardy. CMU took a lead of its own, though, with two consecutive scores before halftime.
Some 25 minutes into the second half, Detroit knotted the game at 2-all when Rachel Stesny tallied, with the assist going to Nicole Gipson. Goalkeeper Katie Fortenberry made sure the scorea stayed deadlocked when she made a save on a CMU penalty shot late in the contest.

WOMEN'S SOCCER
2007 Titans Take Charge In Annual Women's Soccer Alumni Game
August 27, 2007
One of the annual highlights of Titan women's soccer was revisited Saturday when coach Mike Lupenec's team took on the alumni squad at Bishop Gallagher Field. The 2007 Titans won the game, 6-3.
Liz Hardy and Rachel Stesney scored twice each for the current UDM varsity, while Trina Kochanski and Kristen Mannino netted one goal apiece. The Titan Alumni goal scorers were Mary Parker, Leslie-ann O'Shea and Jaclyn Thomas.
The 2007 Titans thank all of the soccer alumni who made it a great event.

Titans Open Women's Soccer Season At Saginaw
August 27, 2007
The Titan women's soccer team (0-0-0) commences their season, Tuesday, Aug. 28, when they travel to Saginaw to take on Division II Saginaw Valley State University (2-0-0). The Titans will look to put a halt to SVSU's strong start as they get their 2007 campaign underway. Kick off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
The Titans, picked to finish fifth in the Horizon League, are looking to advance to the League championship for a fifth consecutive year. A strong 8-3-0 run to finish last season gave the Titans a final record of 10-11-0 (4-3-0 Horizon League) and landed them in the Horizon League Championship match. The Titans fell to Loyola, 2-1, and missed out on the chance to play in the NCAA Tournament. A return trip to the title match is on the mind of head coach Mike Lupenec, but it must be done without the services of two-time League Player of the Year Mary Parker. Parker, who graduated last spring, has joined the coaching staff as a graduate assistant this fall.
The Titans return six starters from last year's Horizon League runner-up squad. Among those returnees is junior goalkeeper Katie Fortenberry (Flushing, MI//Flushing). Fortenberry has allowed just two goals in six career Horizon League Tournament games, and has collected 16 shutouts in two seasons of play. Senior Megan Canty (Royal Oak, MI/Kimball) is the team's leading returning scorer, having netted eight points last season.
In addition to the nine lettermen returning, coach Lupenec will be welcoming six newcomers to the team this fall. Their learning curve will be vital to the success of the Titans this season.
The Titans open league play Wednesday, Oct. 3 when they host Valparaiso.

Titans Close Women's Soccer Pre-Season With 3-2 OT Victory
August 28, 2007
Box Score
It took a little longer than expected, but the Detroit Titan's women's soccer team prevailed over Saginaw Valley State in overtime in what proved to be a thrilling conclusion to the 2007 exhibition season.
Trina Kochanski netted the game winner with less than a minute remaining in overtime to give the Titans the win.
Archana Wadhawan scored the Titans' first goal of the season in the first half to give Detroit a short-lived one-goal advantage. Saginaw (2-1-0) would respond with a breakaway goal of its own to even the score at one. Lauren Moss' goal later in the first put the Titans back on top 2-1, and the score would remain that way heading into the break.
Detroit was given plenty of scoring opportunities in the second half, but could not capitalize. Following a Nicole Gipson shot that hit the post, Saginaw countered and scored its second goal of the match to tie the game and send it into overtime.
It looked as though a second overtime would be necessary, until a scrum in front of the Saginaw net allowed Kochanski to get a foot on the ball and send it past the Saginaw keeper for the game winner with only seconds remaining on the clock.
"We have some defensive issues, but the girls created some scoring chances and really battled," commented head coach Mike Lupenec following the "ugly win."
Detroit returns to action Tuesday Sept., 4, when the Titans open their regular season by traveling to Eastern Michigan. Game time is slated for 4:00 pm. Note that the game was originally scheduled as a UDM home contest, but has been moved to Ypsilanti due to on-going construction of the Titans' new home field.

Titans To Open Season On The Road vs. Eastern Michigan
September 4, 2007
The Detroit Titans women's soccer team (0-0-0) kicks off the 2007 season in earnest today when they travel to Eastern Michigan (0-1-0). It was believed that the Titans had started the season last week when they defeated Saginaw Valley State 3-2 in overtime, but a scheduling gaffe rendered the game nothing more than a final tune up for the season.
The scheduling issue wasted what was an "ugly win" thanks to the right foot of Trina Kochanksi who netted the game winner with less than one minute remaining in overtime. Archana Wadhawan, and Lauren Moss added goals for the Titans with Nicole Gipson tallying the only Titan assist.
Eastern Michigan is coming off of a 3-1 loss to Eastern Illinois in their season opener played last Friday evening. EMU took a 1-0 lead into the half, but allowed three second half goals as EIU stormed back for the win.
Note that the game was originally scheduled to be held in Detroit, but continuing construction on the Titans' home field has forced the game to be played at Scicluna Filed in Ypsilanti, MI.
Today's game is scheduled to start at 4:00 pm.

Women's Soccer Falls to Eastern Michigan in Season Opener
September 4, 2007
Box Score
A sluggish first half of action, followed by a flurry of goals in the opening minutes of the second half doomed the Titans as they fell to Eastern Michigan 4-0 in UDM's opening match of 2007.
The Titans (0-1-0) battled the Eagles (1-1-0) to a scoreless first half, that saw neither team mount any real offense or generate many real scoring opportunities. Things would change quickly in the second half, as Eastern scored two goals in a five minute span that would provide all the offense that the Eagles would need. They would add goals in the 72nd and 85th minute to put the game out of reach.
Detroit was able to record just one shot in the second half as Eastern kept up a high level of pressure. Liz Hardy and Rachel Stesney both notched two shots on goal for the Titans. Goalkeeper Katie Fortenberry was busy on the day as she recorded six saves.
The Titans return to action when they travel to Toledo on Friday for a 5:00 pm engagement.

Rochester, MI--The University of Detroit Mercy's men's soccer team played in its second-straight double overtime game against Oakland and it ended in a 0-0 tie Wednesday afternoon at the OU Soccer Field in Rochester, MI.
OU junior midfielder Piotr Nowak took a penalty kick in the 14th minute from about 15 yards out, but UD sophomore goalkeeper Bryan Kloss tallied one of his six saves of the afternoon to keep the score at 0-0.
In the 66th minute redshirt freshman Jacob Munchiando shot a laser to the lower right hand corner, but an outstretched OU goalkeeper, Steve Clark, deflected the shot. About two minutes later, UDM sophomore Ken Simon took a shot from the top of the box, but it went right of the net.
The Grizzlies had a 10-7 advantage on shots in the 110 minutes, but the Titans amassed seven corner kicks to OU's three.
The last time the Titans played in an overtime game was on Oct. 28, 2006 when UDM lost by a score of 2-1 to UW-Green Bay in the first round of the Horizon League Tournament in Wisconsin. Last season, UDM and OU's match-up went into two extra sessions, which is the Titans last double overtime contest. That game ended in a 2-2 tie with the game played in Detroit on Oct. 22.
The Titans will return to action when they face IPFW in Fort Wayne, IN, on Sept. 12 at 7 p.m.
