: hi
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A class of 13 newcomers will compete for time in 2006, including Soroka (Langhorne, Pa./Edison Academic Center) and UMass transfer Mike Mingione (New Fairfield, Conn./Immaculate), who have trained on campus through the winter, spring and summer. Both forwards have a chance to contribute right away, along with sophomore Jara Habib, (Englishtown, N.J.) and junior Jeff Stepan (Fremont, Calif./Irvin).
Freshmen Andy Foote (Groveland, Mass./Cushing Academy), Adam Himeno (Atlanta, Ga./Druid Hills), Alex Paszek (Rahway, N.J./Morris Catholic) and Tadeu Terra (Sau Paulo, Brazil/Instituto Abel) can all change the complexion of the front line, based on matchups and opposing teams.
Head coach Dr. Dave Masur thinks the group of newcomers can provide some 'added punch' in the attack, while Foote, Himeno and a trio of other freshmen have chances to boost the team's play in the midfield. Diego Correa (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Instituto Abel), Michael Luk (Scarborough, Ontario, Canada/Albert Campbell Collegiate Institute) and Sergio Munez (Linden, N.J./Linden) add to the depth of a unit that features the versatility of senior Billy Hole (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) and sophomore Rory Quinn (Columbia, N.J./North Warren Regional).
With his size and skill, center back Joel Gustafsson (Gothenburg, Sweden/ Katrinelundsgymnasiet) highlights a class of defensive newcomers that will add to the Red Storm's veteran back line. Local product David Reed (Teaneck, N.J./Paramus Catholic) brings athleticism and skill to a unit anchored by senior leaders Patrik Engstrom (Stockholm, Sweden/Frans Schartaus Gymnasium) and Georgios Spanos (West Islip, N.Y./St. John the Baptist).
Redshirt freshmen Ben Clack (Duncanville, Texas/Duncanville) and Petar Rakovic (Belgrade, Serbia & Montenegro/Sports Grammar School) have a year of collegiate training under their belts and should be ready to contribute right away.
Anthony DeMarco (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Crestwood), a sophomore transfer from Cleveland State, adds to the team's already impressive depth at the goalkeeper position. DeMarco and junior Neal Kitson (Little Neck, N.Y./Cardozo/Dowling College) both have collegiate experience, while talented redshirt freshman Michael Keohane (Cupertino, Calif./The Pendleton School) looks to rebound from an injury that sidelined him for the 2005 season. Junior Jason Landers (Lower Gwynedd, Pa./Wissahickon) is the incumbent starter and reigning BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year.

year after scoring the Big East championship-winning goal, Adam Himeno and his Red Storm teammates were spurned of an NCAA tournament invite.

St. John's misses NCAA tournament
For the first time since 1991, the Red Storm missed the Big Dance, the selection committee deciding that its 9-7-5 record and Big East quarterfinal loss at Notre Dame wasn't enough this year. The Red Storm didn't have one win over a top-25 team and went 1-3-1 in its last five games, two important criteria the selection committee looks at when making their picks. Complete story

Charlottsville, Va. -- Junior Nelson Becerra tallied the game-winner and Adam Himeno scored his second goal of the season as the St. John’s men’s soccer team defeated Old Dominion, 2-0, in the Virginia Soccer Classic Sunday. Neal Kitson made one save to record his second-straight shutout in goal for St. John’s (2-0-0). Old Dominion falls to 0-2-0 on the season.
“I thought that we were able to create some good chances, particularly in the second half,” St. John's coach Dave Masur. “Defensively, we maintained our intensity against a tough Old Dominion team.”
When Becerra took the first shot of the game for either team in the 21st minute, he made it count and gave St. John’s a 1-0 lead. After Ale Ivo sent a cross towards the back post, Becerra sent a left-footed shot past the keeper.
The Monarchs tested Kitson for the first time in the 39th minute, but the Red Storm keeper was able to stop a Tommy Webb shot. ODU had one final chance in the 45th minute, but a shot by Adrian LeRoy sailed high and St. John’s led 1-0 at halftime.
Just minutes into the second half ODU had the first scoring chance of the half, but Trevor Banks fired a shot high.
After a shot by Tafadzwa Chiduku went high and a Cristian Gonzalez shot went wide, St. John’s had a chance with a corner kick in the 55th minute. Connor Lade, however, fired a shot wide of net.
Less than eight minutes after entering the game, Himeno put the Red Storm up 2-0 in the 73rd minute with his second goal of the season after assists from Rory Quinn and Walter Hines. It was Quinn who began the play with a forward pass up to Hines. After a nice flick from Hines, Himeno had a one-on-one with the keeper and slid a shot into the back of the net.
St. John’s had another good opportunity in the 75th minute after a corner kick, but Pablo Punyed sent his shot wide.
In the 82nd minute St. John’s had two great chances to go up 3-0, but shots by Himeno and Hines both went off the post.
Notes: Kitson now has four career shutouts … the game-winner for Becerra was the second in his St. John’s career … Hines registered his first career collegiate point … Gonzalez made his first career start … Colin Parenteau-Michon and Menoscar Fernandez each made their collegiate debuts.

UNYIELDING STORM No. 11 St. John's crushes Virginia Tech, 3-0
UNYIELDING STORM
No. 11 St. John's crushes Virginia Tech, 3-0

Jamaica, N.Y. – As a redshirt senior, Rory Quinn has been around the St. John’s men’s soccer team long enough to see the Red Storm take a first-half lead, dominate a game and be unfortunate not to get a second or third goal.
But on Sunday night against No. 22 Virginia Tech, the No 11-ranked Johnnies never let off the gas, storming out of the gate in the second half, scoring twice in a 12-minute span and cruising to a comprehensive 3-0 victory against the Hokies in front of 888 fans at Belson Stadium.
“The fitness aspect of it, that’s what kills the game,” the central midfielder said. “We keep hitting the ball in the corner and we ran then down.”
Of course, it didn’t hurt that Virginia Tech (2-3-1) played Duke Friday night in both team’s ACC opener and then the Hokies bused up to Jamaica.
“It was our most consistent performance, but in other games we haven’t been as consistent,” Red Storm coach Dave Masur said. “We’re young and sometimes we’re not as technically and tactically aware as we need to be and sometimes we’re not as physical as we need to be. Those three things have to get better. If they don’t we’re not going to do as well as we want to do.”
If St. John’s (5-0-1) plays the way it did Sunday, where they held a 12-3 edge in shots and a 7-0 advantage in corners against a Virginia Tech side that lost in last year’s College Cup semifinals, the Red Storm will be one of the toughest teams in the country to beat.
“I think we did by staying together, playing good soccer,” Nelson Becerra said. “We knocked the ball around pretty good. We had a lot of chances and after Trevor (Chiduku) scored the second goal we just dominated the whole team.”
Becerra set up the game’s first goal, serving a corner kick to the back post that freshman Cristian Gonzalez hit first time with his left foot at the edge of the six-yard box for his first collegiate goal in the 38th minute.
“He came in and he was a bit stumbly bumbly, but he’s really worked his butt off,” Quinn said of Gonzalez. “He showed great confidence there to keep (the ball) down.”
In the 64th minute, Tadeu Terra served a great ball from the left side to the far post and Chiduku headed it past Hokies goalkeeper Brendan Dunn, a former standout at Fordham Prep and the New Rochelle Raiders, to double the Red Storm’s lead in the 64th minute.
That goal seemed to demoralize Virginia Tech, which 12 minutes later were done in by a lazy pass in the defensive third that was picked off by Becerra, who took two touches and scored his second goal of the year.
“Our fitness level is pretty high so we were able to run them down in the second half,” junior midfielder Adam Himeno said. “We started well in the second half, the first 15 minutes we pounded them. That boosted our confidence in the second half and we were able to get the second goal from there and later on the third goal.”
It was the Red Storm’s third win against a top 25 team this year and final tune-up before Big East play opens Friday night against Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. Despite one of the best performances from his team in years, Masur was not satisfied.
“We’re still not getting enough people in the box,” Masur said. “When we do get to the endline, our service has been erratic. We must have served three or four totally out of bounds today. All that stuff has to get better if we’re going to win games.”

Milwaukee, Wis. -- Freshman Bjorn de Hoop converted a penalty kick in the 103rd minute to lift the fifth-ranked St. John’s men to a 1-0 Big East victory over past Marquette Sunday.
The goal for de Hoop, the first of his career, helped the Red Storm extend its season-opening unbeaten streak to eight games (6-0-2).
Redshirt senior goalkeeper Neal Kitson made five saves to post his seventh shutout of the year for St. John’s (6-0-2, 1-0-1). He also extended his scoreless streak to 742 minutes and one second, breaking a school record. Matt Pyzdrowski made two saves for Marquette (1-3-2, 0-3-0).
“This was a tough, hard-fought BIG EAST game,” St. John's coach Dr. Dave Masur said. “Marquette is a well-organized team and we really worked hard to grind out a victory today.”
Marquette had the first chance of the game as Nick Kay sent a shot on net in just the 1st minute, but Kitson made the save.
After Sverre Wegge Gundhus fired wide for St. John’s in the 3rd minute, the Golden Eagles tried to counter in the 9th minute. Anthony Colaizzi, however, had his shot attempt blocked.
In the 12th minute Pyzdrowski was tested for the first time, but made the save on a Cristian Gonzalez shot.
Kitson made another fine save in the 37th minute as he tipped a Michael Greene shot over the net.
Only minutes into the first extratime de Hoop sent a hard shot on goal, but Pyzdrowski kept the Red Storm off the board with the save.
In the 103rd minute Ryan Soroka took a pass and brought it into the box. Soroka was taken down and St. John’s was awarded a penalty kick. De Hoop lined up to take the kick and sent a shot to the left of the keeper and into the back of the net.
St. John’s hosts Connecticut in a Big East match Friday at 8 p.m.
