SETON HALL UNIVERSITY
Seton Hall wins first exibition game against Rutgers
Seton Hall Tops No. 12 Rutgers Men’s Soccer, 1-0, In Exhibition Opener
August 25, 2004
PISCATAWAY, NJ - In a reversal of the last time these two teams squared off on the Yurcak Stadium turf, Seton Hall escaped with a 1-0 victory against 12th-ranked Rutgers on Wednesday evening in men’s soccer exhibition action.
In their last meeting under much cooler temperatures in early November, the Scarlet Knights and Pirates squared off in the BIG EAST Championship quarterfinals, with RU pulling out the 1-0 victory in overtime on a header from Bart Koffeman (The Hague, Holland).
Both teams were physical in the early going on Wednesday night, as 13 first-half fouls were whistled. The Scarlet Knights had a number of opportunities to score, but could not get the ball into the net.
Seton Hall broke through for a goal in the 43rd minute, as John Raus served a ball into the box where the Pirates’ Justin McGrath and Mark Pedreiras both came in for the cross. Pedreiras finally corralled it and slipped it past Rutgers goalkeeper Bill y Chiles (Silver Spring, MD) for the score.
Chiles, a redshirt freshman, was seeing his first collegiate action in the match. He split time in goal with sophomore Lubos Ancin (Burlington, NJ) and senior George Vasilakis (Toms River, NJ). Ancin began the match, playing the first 28 minutes before Chiles relieved him. Vasilakis played the final 29 minutes of the contest, making RU’s lone save of the evening.
Rutgers had several open chances but could not counter, with the Pirates holding on for the 1-0 victory.
Senior transfer Andrew Herman (Oceanside, NY) was active in his debut in a Scarlet Knight uniform, but could not score, ending the night with two shots. He was one of 10 players to see their first collegiate action on Wednesday night, joining, Abdul Kargbo (Alexandria, VA), Jake Martenson (Winchester. VA), Ed Ohin (Louisville, KY), Tommy Gray (Middletown, NJ), Zach Simi (East Brunswick, NJ), Kyle Grato (West Windsor, NJ), Warren Richards (Philadelphia, PA), Chiles and Vasilakis.
Rutgers outshot Seton Hall, 9-7 in the match. SHU’s Boris Pardo and Ian Joyce split time in goal, with Pardo making the Pirates’ lone stop.
Rutgers will travel to Columbus, OH, to take on Ohio State in the College Cup Preview match at Columbus Crew Stadium on Friday, Aug. 27, in its final exhibition tune-up. The Scarlet Knights open their regular season at home against Pittsburgh on Friday, Sept. 3, at 7 p.m.

Laventure's Hat Trick Carries Men's Soccer to 5-3 Win Over George Mason
9/19/2004

Box Score
Jerrod Laventure notched three goals and an assist in Sunday's 5-3 win over George Mason
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The 23rd-ranked Seton Hall men’s soccer team had been waiting all season for the offensive production it received Sunday afternoon, but it almost was not enough as SHU had to survive a late rally by George Mason to win, 5-3, at Owen T. Carroll Field. Senior Jerrod Laventure (Middle Island, N.Y.) notched three goals and an assist, while freshman Yomar Gonzalez (Lodi, N.J.) added two goals and an assist to help the Pirates improve to 4-2-1 overall.
“This could be a good win for us down the road after they [George Mason] had beaten a good [10th-ranked] Saint Louis team on Friday,” said Seton Hall coach Manfred Schellscheidt. “The first goal settled us down a bit and got us going. We got the result we wanted after a sloppy start.”
Laventure knocked in his first goal of the day on a rebound at the 26:01 mark. Senior Mark Pedreiras (Union, N.J.) set the goal up when he made a run along the endline and sent a pass into the box that went off Gonzalez’s foot and off George Mason’s John O’Hara, before landing at Laventure’s feet. Gonzalez and Laventure hooked up again just over two minutes later when Gonzalez took a pass from his attack partner in the box and slid to knock the ball past a diving O’Hara making it 2-0 in favor of the Pirates.
Laventure gave the Pirates a cushion with a pair of goals in a two-minute span in the second half to finish the hat trick. In the 58th minute he settled a crossing pass from junior Michael Zotti (Scotch Plains, N.J.) to get past a defender and ripped a shot from 10 yards. His third goal came at 60:31 when he ran onto a neat pass from sophomore Sacha Kljestan (Huntington Beach, Calif.) that split the defense. Laventure then put his shot past the goalkeeper from 15 yards, making it 4-1 in favor of SHU.
George Mason managed to cut the lead to one twice in the second half, but could not get the equalizer. Anthony Noriega got GMU on the board when he deflected an attempted clearing pass from SHU’s Ian Joyce and it bounded into the empty net, cutting the deficit to 2-1. After another SHU goal, the Patriots tallied a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes. The first came after Danny Climo’s corner kick was headed to the far side of the net by Damien Quinn where it find Damian O’Rourke, who headed it into the back of the net. GMU cut it to 4-3, after Matt Mendy headed home a rebound off of Teba McKnight’s shots. However, Gonzalez ended the rally when he kicked in a rebound from Kljestan at the 86:39 mark, to give SHU a 5-3 advantage.
“I think we played really well and controlled the game before a few lapses in the back made it interesting,” commented Schellscheidt about the play of his team.
“Jason [Hernandez] and Jerrod [Laventure] I thought played really well,” said Schellscheidt assessing two of his seniors. “Sacha [Kljestan] was back to playing like his old self and I thought Victor [Kotynski] had a really strong game. Yomar [Gonzalez] has a knack of being in the right place in around the goal and I think that helped everyone’s production.”
The win helped Seton Hall remain unbeaten at home dating back to October 27, 2002, a span of 12 games. SHU has gone 10-0-2 in that span. The Pirates controlled much of the action, out shooting the Patriots, 19-10 . Joyce had to make just one save for the Pirates to earn the win. O’Hara made five saves for the Patriots.
The Pirates return to action on Saturday, Sept. 25, when they host Providence in a 1:00 p.m. BIG EAST match.

Kljestan Brothers Lead Men's Soccer Past No. 24 Villanova, 2-0
9/29/2004
Printable Box Score (.pdf)
Sacha Kljestan's first goal of the season proved to be the game-winner against Villanova.
ZERAPHATH, N.J. – The 21st ranked Seton Hall men’s soccer team got a goal apiece from brothers, Sacha and Gordon Kljestan (Huntington Beach, Calif.) to earn a 2-0 win over 24th ranked Villanova on Wednesday afternoon at Player Development Academy. Senior Jerrod Laventure (Middle Island, N.Y.) notched an assist on both goals to help the Pirates improve to 6-2-1 overall and 2-1-0 in the BIG EAST. Villanova, ranked 24th in the latest College Soccer News poll, falls to 5-2-1 and 3-2-0. The game was moved away from SHU’s home field, Owen T. Carroll Field, due to a rainstorm that came through the area on Tuesday night.
“The are a very good team and they only suffered their first loss on Sunday,” head coach Manfred Schellscheidt said of Villanova. “Last week they were ranked and we took their spot in the rankings. They will take points from a lot of teams this year.”
Seton Hall controlled much of the early action, but did not break through the Villanova defense until the 38th minute when Sacha Kljestan worked a give-and-go in the 18-yard box with Laventure and blasted his shot past VU’s Craig Bald for a 1-0 advantage. The Pirates dominated offensively in the first half, outshooting the Wildcats, 10-0.
Villanova managed to mount pressure in the second half and generated a couple solid chances late in the game. In the 81st minute a Brett Strasfurth took a cross in the box and flicked a header on net, but junior Boris Pardo (Hillside, N.J.) made a diving save to preserve the shutout.
Gordon Kljestan put the game out of reach at 89:39 when he ran onto a long pass from Laventure and beat Bald to the ball and poked into the net for the final margin. Seton Hall finished with a 14-7 advantage in shots for the game, while Pardo made three saves for his second straight shutout. Bald made four saves for the Wildcats.
“Every win in a BIG EAST game is big,” Schellscheidt said of the importance of his team’s win. “Every game is a battle now. We played to what we needed to do. In the second half the wind forced us to play back a little bit and I thought our defenders played extremely well.”
The Pirates return to action on Saturday, Oct. 2, when they face Pittsburgh (2-2-2, 0-1-1) at Founders Field in Pittsburgh, Pa.
