Seton Hall are 3-0 for the season

Sept. 5, 2008
QUICK START
Hall scores 3 in first half to beat Richmond

Richmond, Va. -- The Seton Hall men’s soccer team rolled to a 3-0 victory over Richmond Friday in the opening game of the VCU Classic. The Pirates scored three times in the first half to cruise to the win.

Seton Hall (3-0-0) wasted little time in jumping out to the lead. Coming off a four-goal game in his last outing, sophomore Samuel Petrone scored on a blast from 15 yards out after being set up by senior Christian Vercollone and classmate Steven Rose to make it 1-0 in the 14th minute.

The Hall stayed in attack mode throughout the first half, peppering Richmond (0-2-0) with shots. In the 36th minute, Vercollone dribbled down the left side before beating two defenders and notching his first goal of the season into the upper right corner of the net.

Just over three minutes later, the Pirates picked up their third tally of the half. Sophomore Dritan Sela sent a lob pass down the right sideline to junior Erik Vendola, who drew Richmond keeper Brock Tomlinson out of the net and fed a pass to Rose, who shot into a wide open net for his first career goal.

Junior goalie Paul McHenry was stellar in goal once again as he recorded his second shutout win of the season. A diving save in the 30th minute and a beautiful break up off a Spiders’ scoring chance in the 52nd minute highlighted his three save performance.

Petrone led the Hall with six shots, five of which were on goal. Rose and Vercollone both launched five shots as the Pirates posted a 27-10 edge in attempts.

Seton Hall takes on Virginia Commonwealth at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday in the final game of the Classic.

TOURNAMENT WIN
Seton Hall wins St. John's NYC Nike Classic

Jamaica, N.Y. -- Nicki Gross broke a 2-all draw with a 108th-minute game-winner to lift the Seton Hall women's team to a 3-2 victory over Columbia Sunday afternoon at Belson Stadium. The Pirates, which defeated Quinnipiac, 1-0, Friday night, captured the St. John's NYC Nike Classic title.

After allowing the go-ahead goal in the 61st minute, Seton Hall freshman Ashley Beamish connected on a pass from freshman Wiebke Balcke to put the ball into the left side of the net to tie the game at two.

The Pirates took an early, 1-0, lead in the 18th minute when sophomore Maddy Kill passed the ball from the corner and it was headed into the net by sophomore Shannon Desmond. The score remained, 1-0, until the 53rd minute when Nora Dooley chipped a shot over the head of Pirates’ redshirt freshman goalkeeper Elizabeth Bond, who finished the game with three saves for her fourth win of the season.

Seton Hall finished the game with 18 total shots, while Columbia goalkeeper Rebecca Taylor made eight saves, including six in the second half. The Lions led the way with 10 fouls to the Pirates four and corner kicks, 4-3.

The Pirates begin a three-game home stand beginning Friday evening against their in-state conference rival Rutgers. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. Columbia hosts American Friday at 7 p.m.
