5. COLLEGE: St. Peter's, Binghamton and Portland men register road victories
Home-field advantage helped 13 teams advance in the first round of
the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Tournament this weekend. Only St.
Peter's, Binghamton and Portland registered road victories; beating
Brown, Fairleigh Dickinson and Oregon State, respectively.
The Pilots' victory over OSU was probably one of the most exciting
matches as well as one of the more surprising results. Portland fell
behind, 2-1 in the 78th minute, tied the game in the 80th on a Paul
Robinson penalty kick, then won it on defender Josh Brown's first
goal of the season in the 87th.
Also dramatic was Tulsa's 3-2 overtime win against Oakland in which
the Golden Hurricane twice rallied from a goal down. Sophomore Ryan
Pore scored tying goals in the 41st and 89th minutes before Kris
Glasser won it in the 103rd minute.
Three games were decided by penalty kicks, with the home side
advancing from each tiebreaker: Santa Clara (with U.S. U-20 keeper
Steve Cronin in goal for his last game before heading to the World
Youth Championship) over SMU, Virginia Tech over Clemson and Kentucky
over Cincinnati.
Second-round games take place Wednesday with the 16 teams receiving
first-round byes hosting. The exception Cal State Northridge, which
must travel to FIU despite its first-round bye.
In the NCAA Division II quarterfinals, Jacob Schramm came off the
bench to tally the game-winner in the 87th minute and give Findlay a
2-1 win over Truman and end its winning streak at 26 games -- the
second longest in NCAA Division II men's history.
Findlay (10-5-5) meets Chico State (20-4-1) in one semifinal, and
Lynn (20-0-1) faces Dowling (15-3-3) in the other. The Division II
men's final four will be held in conjunction with the Division II
women's finals in Dec. 3-5 Virginia Beach, Va.
Cullen Davies' hat trick led Trinity (Texas) to a 3-0 win over UC
Santa Cruz and move the Tigers into the semifinals of the NCAA
Division III semifinals The win gave Trinity a 22-0-0 record and
Coach Paul McGinlay his 200th career victory.
It also set up a date against Wisconsin-Oshkosh, which moved to
21-0-0 with a 1-0 win over Dominican of Illinois. Drew (20-1-2) meets
Wheaton of Massachusetts(19-3-1) in the other semifinal.
No. 2 seed Rio Grande (Ohio) beat defending champion Mobile, 3-1, in
the quarterfinals of the NAIA men's national championship at the
Olathe (Kan.) District Activity Center.
The Redmen, who got goals from Conar Dawson, Simon Carey and Tony
Griffith, meet third-seeded Hastings (Neb.) Monday in one semifinal.
Fresno Pacific faces Berry in the other semifinal. Fernando Ramirez,
who has five goals in two Fresno Pacific victories, is one of five
Sunbird starters from the Fresno Fuego team that reached the round of
16 of the 2003 U.S. Open Cup.
