Sternberger Lifts Rutgers Past Providence in BIG EAST Action, 1-0
September 19, 2004
PISCATAWAY, NJ - Redshirt freshman Adam Sternberger (May’s Landing, NJ) scored with just over 10 minutes remaining in the match to lift Rutgers to a 1-0 victory over Providence in BIG EAST men’s soccer action Sunday afternoon at Yurcak Field. With the victory, the Scarlet Knights even their record to 2-2-2, and 1-0-1 in BIG EAST play. Providence falls to 0-5 on the season and 0-2 in conference action.
Rutgers dominated the possession throughout the match, outshooting the Friars, 21-1. After several near goals by the Scarlet Knights, Sternberger put it in the back of the net for the winning score. The redshirt freshman, who sat out last season with a knee injury, saw his first collegiate action Sunday afternoon. The forward received a cross from senior co-captain Anthony Schiavino (North Hunterdon, NJ), juggling it in the air with his left foot before firing a hard shot from 10 yards out in the 78th minute.
Sophomore Lubos Ancin (Burlington, NJ) had a quiet day in goal for the Scarlet Knights, as the Friars did not register a shot on goal all contest. Providence keeper Jeff Newman made four saves in the match.
Prior to Sternberger’s goal, Rutgers had several close opportunities to score. Sophomore Nick LaBrocca (Howell, NJ) collided with the Friars’ goalkeeper while fighting for a ball, sending the Friar keeper to the ground. Sophomore Bart Koffeman (The Hague, Holland) corralled the ball, firing a hard shot from outside the box, which Newman jumped up and deflected just high of the cross bar.
“We played very tough today,” said Rutgers head coach Bob Reasso. “We were able to turn our possession into a goal. A lot of young guys played vital roles today and were very active. We need to use this as a springboard heading into the conference schedule.”
Freshman Zach Simi (East Brunswick, NJ) made his first collegiate appearance on Sunday, recording two shots. The forward nearly scored his first collegiate goal, but his attempt to lob the ball over the keeper sailed just wide of the near post.
Rutgers extends its unbeaten streak against Providence to 10 matches, holding a 9-0-1 mark all-time against the Friars.
Rutgers continues BIG EAST play, traveling to Villanova, PA, for a 3:30 p.m. matchup with the Wildcats on Wednesday, Sept. 22.

Karcz Leads Rutgers in 3-0 Upset of #3 Michigan
Senior Completes Improbable Comeback From Injury With Second-Half Heroics
September 24, 2004
PISCATAWAY, NJ – Senior Chris Karcz (Clifton, NJ) completed his improbable comeback Friday night, scoring a pair of goals to lead Rutgers to a 3-0 upset of third-ranked Michigan in front of 1,572 fans at Yurcak Field. The win improves Rutgers to 3-3-2 overall, handing Michigan its first loss of the season at 6-1.
Karcz, a two-time All-BIG EAST selection, suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the spring. After extensive rehabilitation, he made his season debut against Villanova on Wednesday, nearly scoring on the second of his two shots. He capped the unlikely comeback with two goals tonight – his 16th and 17th career goals.
“Chris showed everyone how tough of a competitor he is,” said Rutgers head coach Bob Reasso. “You can not replace a kid like Chris. I was happy for him. We played a great team in Michigan. It was a great win for us and a very entertaining game for our fans.”
Karcz hooked up with freshman Zach Simi (East Brunswick, NJ) twice in the second half, scoring two of RU’s three second-half tallies. Simi crossed the ball to Karcz, who was situated in the center of the box. He rocketed in a low ball two minutes into the second half to put the Scarlet Knights up 1-0. The pair replayed its earlier goal in the 78th minute. Simi crossed the ball in from the left side where Karcz shot the ball into Michigan goalkeeper Joe Zawacki, who deflected it. The ball slipped inside the right post, extending the Scarlet Knights’ lead to 2-0.
Shortly after Karcz exited the match, signaling a standing ovation from the boisterous crowd, Rutgers tacked on a third score. Junior Scott Gahagan (Old Bridge, NJ) received a feed from sophomore Alieu Terry (Silver Spring, MD), lobbing it over the keeper’s head for his second goal of the season.
Rutgers dominated offensively, outshooting the Wolverines 12-4 while holding a 7-5 edge in corner kicks. Both RU goalkeeper Lubos Ancin (Burlington, N) and UM’s Zawacki recorded one save in the match.
Rutgers returns to action next Friday night, serving as the host for 2004 Philips/adidas Soccer Classic. St. John’s and Hartwick will open the tournament at 5:30 and the Scarlet Knights will face College of Charleston in the night-cap at 8 p.m.

Karcz Named College Soccer News National Player of the Week
Senior Nets Two Goals In Upset of No. 3 Michigan
September 27, 2004
PISCATAWAY, NJ – Rutgers senior All-BIG EAST forward Chris Karcz (Clifton, NJ) has been named the College Soccer News National Player of the Week, the online publication announced on Monday.
Karcz suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee early in the spring, leaving his 2004 season in doubt. The two-time All-BIG EAST forward rehabilitated throughout the summer and made his season debut last week against No. 21 Villanova. The second of his two shots nearly connected for a goal, but the ball sailed just high of the cross bar.
In his second game back on Friday against No. 3 Michigan, Karcz netted two goals as Rutgers upended the previously-undefeated Wolverines, 3-0. He hooked up with freshman Zach Simi (East Brunswick, NJ) twice in the contest, scoring the Scarlet Knights’ first and second goals. His first score marked the sixth game-winning goal of his career, moving him into 10th place on the school’s all-time list.
“Chris’ performance was remarkable,” said Rutgers head coach Bob Reasso. “He is one of the fiercest players I have ever coached. To comeback and not be ‘match fit’ and to play on the level he did is really amazing. I think this is a fitting honor and I am delighted for him.”
He is part of the College Soccer News National Team of the Week, joining BIG EAST players Guy Melemad (Boston College) and Rusty Girton (West Virginia).
Karcz is the second Scarlet Knight to receive National Player of the Week honors in as many years as just over a year ago, Josh Gros was tabbed with the honor on Sept. 22, 2003.
Rutgers (3-3-2) hosts the 19th annual Philips/adidas Soccer Classic this weekend. RU will play College of Charleston on Friday at 8 p.m. and Hartwick on Sunday at 4 p.m. St. John’s will open the weekend tournament with a match against Hartwick on Friday at 5:30 p.m. College of Charleston will face the Red Storm on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

Simi Powers Rutgers to 1-0 Victory in Philips/adidas Soccer Classic
St. John’s Defeated Hartwick, 4-1, in Opening Match
October 1, 2004
PISCATAWAY, NJ – The freshmen duo of Zach Simi (East Brunswick, NJ) and Tommy Gray (Middletown, NJ) connected on a goal in the 28th minute to lead Rutgers to a 1-0 victory in the nightcap of the Philips/adidas Rutgers Soccer Classic Friday night before 1,414 fans at Yurcak Field. Rutgers improves to 4-3-2 with the victory, while College of Charleston falls to 4-3-2.
Gray crossed the ball to Simi, situated in the center of the box, who punched in his first career goal from 14 yards out. Simi, who is playing in just his fourth collegiate game, has four points in his last two contests after registering a pair of assists in the victory over No. 3 Michigan last Friday.
“I thought we played well tonight,” said Rutgers head coach Bob Reasso. “We have a young team and they are maturing fast. We controlled possession and were aggressive offensively.”
Rutgers dominated possession, outshooting the Cougars, 17-4, while holding a 7-0 edge in corner kicks. Goalkeeper Lubos Ancin (Burlington, NJ) made two saves for RU, while College of Charleston’s Keith Wiggans registered seven saves for the Cougars.
College of Charleston nearly scored the game’s first goal, but Scott Milroth’s shot ricocheted off the far post and out of the goal where Ancin corralled it.
In the first match of the night, St. John’s defeated Hartwick, 4-1. SJU’s Andrei Gotsmanov scored three goals for the Red Storm, and Simone Salinno added a fourth. Hartwick’s Craig Potter had the Hawks’ lone goal on a penalty kick.
The Philips/adidas Rutgers Soccer Classic will conclude on Sunday when St. John’s takes on College of Charleston at 1:00 a.m. before Rutgers meets Hartwick at 4 p.m.
