NO INTENSITY
Listless Rutgers falls to Towson, 2-1
Piscataway, N.J. -- Freshman Sam Archer scored in the 87th minute to bring the Scarlet Knights within a goal, but it was not enough as the Rutgers men’s soccer team drop a 2-1 decision to Towson on Wednesday evening at Yurcak Field.
“I thought we came out flat today,” Rutgers coach Bob Reasso said. “We were the better team but we lost the game on set pieces which can’t happen, you have to mark your man on set pieces.”
Matt Beckman drove a corner kick to the far post where Scott Horta was able to put a foot on it and score the first goal of the season for the Tigers in the 17th minute.
Both teams continued to trade shot opportunities in the first half and into the second until the 62nd minute when Towson increased its lead with a goal off a free kick. Horta played the restart from 60 yards out into the box where Kevin Ruck, a 6-4 forward, headed the ball in goal.
The Scarlet Knights turned up the intensity in the closing minutes of the game, but the rally fell just short as RU missed a number of chances from inside the penalty area. Archer’s goal, the first of his collegiate career, was a hard-earned one as the rookie dribbled past several defenders to deliver a strike past Towson goal goalie John Steele.
The goal pulled Rutgers within one, however, that was as close as the Scarlet Knights would get as Towson was able to hold on for the 2-1 victory.
“We didn’t start playing until we were down 2-0,” Reasso said. “We had a bunch of clear opportunities down the stretch. It was harder to miss the chances we had than it was to make them.”
Rutgers will return to action on Saturday when they host St. Peter’s College at 7 p.m.
