Soccer America Magazine named Saint Louis forward Vedad Ibisevic its 2003 Men's College Freshman of the Year:

Unpredictable on the dribble, quick on the trigger with either foot and nasty enough to intimidate some defenders, Ibisevic stormed past Brian McBride's freshman scoring record at SLU and finished with 40 points.

4. COLLEGE: Soccer America 2003 Men's Freshman All-Americans

CHAD BARRETT (UCLA)
Forward from Beaver ton, Ore.
A hard-nosed approach yielded 10 goals 8 assists for Oregon native, the only non-Californian on the Pac-10 champion Bruins.

Goalkeeper from Cumberland Foreside, Maine
Finished the season with a 1.12 GAA; helped Cavaliers win ACC Tournament by making six saves in penalty kick tiebreakers.

GREG DALBY (NOTRE DAME)

Started every game as Fighting Irish allowed a mere 16 goals in 23 matches and won Big East Tournament.

VEDAD IBISEVIC (SAINT LOUIS)
Forward from Saint Louis
Recently called into Bosnia's Under-21 national team, this feisty striker battled his way to 18 goals and four assists.

WILL JOHN (SAINT LOUIS)
Forward from Kansas City
Using rare combination of breakaway speed and creative ability, this withdrawn striker poached 9 goals and set up five others.

ASHLEY KOZICKI (ST. JOHN'S)
Forward from Pleasant Valley, Pa.
Instrumental in the Red Storm's playoff run to the national final, logging a goal, two assists and drawing two penalty kicks.

RAMON NUNEZ (SMU)
Midfielder from Dallas
In what turned out to be his only season of college soccer, Honduran-born Nunez produced 4 goals, 10 assists for the Mustangs.

BRANDON OWENS (UCLA)
Defender from Murrieta, Calif.
A key piece of the unit that tied a school record by averaging 0.52 goals-against per game and pitched in two goals.

JACOB PETERSON (INDIANA)
Forward from Portage, Mich.
Among his seven goals were a pivotal overtime tally at Michigan and the national championship game clincher. Also had five assists.

WILLIE SIMS (CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE)

6. COLLEGE MEN: Jorge Salcedo hired as UCLA coach

Jorge Salcedo, the former UCLA star who played five seasons in Major League Soccer, will take charge of the Bruins' men's soccer program, the university announced Friday.

Salcedo, a UCLA assistant coach since 2001, takes over for his former Columbus Crew coach, Tom Fitzgerald, who resigned in January to become head coach at Division II Tampa.

"It is an honor and a privilege to be named the head coach of the UCLA men's soccer program," Salcedo said in a release. "It is a responsibility that I won't take lightly, and I will do everything in my power to continue the great tradition that Sigi Schmid, Todd Saldana and Tom Fitzgerald have built."

Salcedo, 34, is the seventh head coach in Bruin history, following Dennis Storer (1967-73), Terry Fisher (1974), Steve Gay (1975-79), Schmid (1980-98), Saldana (1999-2001) and Fitzgerald (2002-03).

Salcedo was a four-year starter for Schmid in 1990-93, winning an NCAA title as a freshman and earning NSCAA first-team All-America distinction as a senior. A defender and central midfielder, he played 74 matches for the Bruins, scoring six goals with seven assists.

He was connected to three of UCLA's four NCAA Division I championships, serving as ball boy in 1985, scoring the decisive penalty kick in the title-game shootout in 1990, and as assistant coach in 2002. The Bruins also won the NCAA title in 1997.

Salcedo, from Cerritos, Calif., captained the U.S. under-17 team that beat Brazil at the 1989 U-17 World Cup in Scotland, and was a captain for the U.S. U-20 squad that competed in the CONCACAF qualifying tournament.

He made three appearances, totaling 91 minutes, with the full U.S. national team, coming on as a substitute in road games against Trinidad & Tobago and Jamaica in November 1994 and against Belgium in Brussels in April 1995.

Salcedo played for four teams in MLS, playing with the Los Angeles Galaxy (1996, 1999-2000), Columbus Crew (1997), Chicago Fire (1998) and Tampa Bay Mutiny (1998-99). Prior to MLS, he played for the A-League's Los Angeles Salsa and for Mexican club Morelia.

Salcedo has served as UCLA's interim coach since Fitzgerald resigned, and he also guided the team in spring 2002, after Saldana was ousted. Salcedo also was head coach of the 2002 U-16 Southern California ODP team and was assistant coach of the U-17 team the year before.

Salcedo's brother, Eddie, and uncle Hector also played at UCLA, and his father, Hugo, was an assistant coach in 1978-79.

Default What happened to Jeremiah White?

I haven't heard his name at all since the MLS Draft, I had high hopes for this kid. Does anybody even know if he's even playing in the MLS?

Text of report by Serbian news agency Beta

Belgrade, 6 April: US soccer player Jeremiah White has asked to be released from the contract with the Belgrade premier league OFK Beograd soccer club after a group of hooligans had attacked him while he was strolling in the capital of Serbia-Montenegro, today's Sportski Zurnal reports.

The paper reports that while strolling in Belgrade, White was attacked by "a group of rowdy teenagers who objected to the black skin of the OFK Beograd soccer player".

"White was saved by his hard fist and quick legs and he emerged from the situation unscathed. However, he immediately reported the incident to the US embassy, which advised him to return to the United States. White yesterday asked the management of OFK Beograd to release him from his contract," Sportski Zurnal reports.

3. COLLEGE: SLU's Ibisevic plays for PSG against Juventus

Saint Louis University striker Vedad Ibisevic, the 2003 Soccer
America College Freshman of the Year, started for French First
Division club Paris St. Germain over the weekend in its 1-0 loss to
Italian club Juventus.

Ibisevic, 19, joined PSG on a tryout in mid-July. He was spotted by
PSG coach Vahid Halilhodzic playing in a friendly game for Bosnia's
under-21 team. Like Ibisevic, Halilhodzic is Bosnian.

Ibisevic moved to the St. Louis area when he was 15 and attended
Roosevelt High School before joining the Billikens. He had 18 goals
and four assists in his freshman season.
