4. DALLAS CUP: Texans make history
The Dallas Texans made history when they became the first American team to win the Super Group at the Dallas Cup.
The Texans, U.S. Youth Soccer national champions as U-17s last summer, beat Santos of Mexico, 4-2, to capture the Dr. Pepper Dallas Cup’s elite division. The Texans won all five games in a competition that included youth teams from Manchester United and Real Madrid.
Real Madrid is among the famous clubs, along with Corinthians and Sao Paulo of Brazil, West Ham United and Nottingham Forest of England and Tahuichi of Bolivia, to have previously won the Super Group.
The Texans got two goals from SMU signee Dane Saintus and goals from Virginia-bound Jonathan Villanueva and Harvard recruit Andre Akpan to beat Santos. Billy Dworsky, who resides in Huntsville, Ala., and will attend North Carolina, had three assists for the Texans, who overcame 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to take a 3-2 lead at the end of a wild first half.
Only two other American teams had ever reached the final of the Super Group, which was established in 1990.
Celebrating its 27th year, the Dallas Cup featured another first when American teams won all seven groups. The Texans also won the U-16 group, beating Dallas rival Solar in a shootout. Solar’s U-17s, Florida club West Kendall Alliance’s U-15s and Georgia club Cobb FC’s U-14s all won titles with victories over Mexico clubs. FC Texas Black won the U-19 group with a 3-1 win over Knowsley Youth of England. The Longhorns, the Dallas club that started the Dallas Cup, was rewarded with the U-12 title, their first boys title since 1987.
The 2005 tournament marked the first year the Dallas Cup was played at the Pizza Hut Park, the FC Dallas soccer complex, in suburban Frisco.
