Indiana 2, St. John's 1
By ANITA CHANG
The Associated Press
12/14/03 4:48 PM
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Indiana scored twice in four minutes to beat St. John's 2-1 Sunday and give retiring coach Jerry Yeagley his sixth NCAA soccer championship.
In a game that ended under a steady snowfall, Ned Grabavoy scored on a free kick in the 16th minute, and Jacob Peterson made it 2-0 in the 20th for the eighth-seeded Hoosiers.
Yeagley started Indiana's varsity soccer program in 1973, and he leaves with more victories and a higher winning percentage than any other men's college soccer coach. He led the Hoosiers to 16 appearances in the College Cup.
St. John's, playing in its first NCAA final since winning the 1996 title, scored with 12 minutes left. Tim O'Neill sent a pass across the penalty box to Chris Corcoran, who volleyed the ball toward the goal. Ashley Kozicki knocked it in from 6 yards out.
Trying to send the game into overtime, St. John's took a variety of desperation shots in the last 10 minutes on a field completely covered by an icy white blanket.
The steady snow made a soggy field even more slick, causing players to slip and fall throughout the game.
Before kickoff, a tractor and dozens of people, including Crew Stadium general manager Mark McCullers and Major League Soccer's Columbus Crew general manager Jim Smith, used rakes and shovels to clear away the 3 inches of snow that fell overnight. Three-foot snowbanks lined one side of the field.
Indiana was awarded a free kick after Peterson was taken down by Chris Leidner while making a run for the goal. Peterson had no one between him and the goal when he was fouled.
On the free kick, Grabavoy set up from 18 yards out across from the middle of the goal. The shot bent right, over six St. John's players and into the bottom right corner of the goal.
It was 2-0 soon after, when Peterson got the ball at midfield and broke free from Jeff Carroll, who slipped while turning downfield. Peterson dashed toward the goal and ripped off the shot from 18 yards, splitting defenders Chris Wingert and O'Neill.
The ball went under the arm of diving goalie Bill Gaudette and into the bottom left corner.

Chad Marshall and Ryan Cochrane to MLS!!!!!!!!!!
http://www.topdrawersoccer.com/NextS...216182833/view
Chad Marshall, Ryan Cochrane among U20 players preparing to play professional soccer
Chad Marshall and Ryan Cochrane, the central defensive pairing who helped lead the U.S. U20 team to within a hair's breadth of a semifinal berth in the just-completed FIFA World Youth Championship, are both moving to Major League Soccer for next year.
Marshall signed a Project 40 contract with the league before leaving for the U20 event, while Cochrane described himself as "in the process" of signing. Both players declined to sign similar deals at around this time last year.
Fellow U20 players Ned Grabavoy, Steve Cronin and Clint Dempsey are also expected to turn professional, with Grabavoy and Cronin contemplating options both at home and abroad, and Dempsey expected to sign domestically. Late addition Freddy Adu has already signed with the league and will play with DC United.
Marshall, who played college soccer the past two seasons at Stanford, had reportedly attracted some interest from European clubs, but said MLS is the right fit for him now.
"Two years ago I thought I wanted to go to Europe, but I've seen some big name players have a hard time with it over there," Marshall said. "I think is is the right thing for me to do now. I can put money away for school and I think the league is doing well. I see a guy like (Carlos) Bocanegra developing well and probably going overseas now, and I think it's a good path for me to take too."
For Cochrane, a junior at Santa Clara, deciding to wait a year after seriously considering jumping to the pros last year has worked out well.
"After the way things went at the U20 World Championship I can't wait to get started with the next level," Cochrane said. "I think it was worth it to wait and see what would happen, but I think it's working out fine."
Cochrane said he will be at the MLS Combine in January at Home Depot Center, while Marshall said he is uncertain whether he will attend.

expect Maryland to have another strong season
Maryland 2004
Despite all the graduation losses, I see no reason to feel that Maryland is going to be down. Any team that starts with a cadre that include Noah Palmer in goal, Clarence Goodson, Kenney Bertz, and Chris Lancos on the back line, Ian Rodway and Michael Dello-Russo in the midfield, and Jason Garey, Dom Mediate, Abe Thompson, and Erwin Diaz up front, is not a team that I am going to be worried about.
I disagree slightly with Terpfan in that I think King will have a decent shot at starting in the midfield. That is where the heaviest graduation losses have come (Sumed Ibrahim, Scott Buete, A.J. Herrera); in addition to Rodway and Dello-Russo, they also have Jason Arnold back and he can go at either forward or midfield, but with the loss of playmakers like Buete, Marcantonio, etc, I am wondering if Sasho may have to consider moving Mediate back to the midfield. Either way, King and the other midfield recruit, Kevin Reiman from Yorktown Heights, NY will get a long look at that position.
Sasho is all set at forward and in goal and has a couple of bruisers coming in at defender: Keith Vereb from Bowie, MD and Eric Brunner of Columbus, OH, but with the guys he has coming back, won't be forced to play them immediately, can bring them along patiently.
Nope, it ain't over in College Park yet.

Reddick, Wingert Claim Hermann Trophy 12/01/04
Senior defenders Catherine Reddick of the University of North Carolina and Chris Wingert of St. John's University are the winners of the 2003 Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy, presented to the top male and female players in NCAA Division I soccer. The winners were decided by a vote of current National Soccer Coaches Association of America members at the NCAA Division I level.
Reddick (Birmingham, Ala.) spent part of the collegiate season with the U.S. Women's National Team, where she was a starting defender in the 2003 Women's World Cup. She returned to UNC following the World Cup to score six goals and dish out five assists for 17 points in 13 matches. The senior defender was a key part of Carolina's historic season in which the Tar Heels went 27-0, the best record ever in women's college soccer.
Reddick keyed a dominant UNC defense that did not allow a goal in post-season play, earning NCAA Tournament Defensive MVP honors. North Carolina posted a 6-0 shutout over Connecticut in the finals to capture the school's 18th national championship.
With Reddick's selection, the Tar Heels have had the sixth players earn college soccer's top honor a total of eight times: Shannon Higgins, 1989 (Hermann); Kristine Lilly, 1991 (both the M.A.C. and Hermann awards); Mia Hamm, 1992 and 1993 (both each year); Tisha Venturini, 1994 (both); and Cindy Parlow, 1997 and 1998 (both each year).
The two other finalists for the award were University of North Carolina sophomore forward Lindsay Tarpley (Kalamazoo, Mich.) and Penn State senior forward Joanna Lohman (Silver Spring, Md.), a two-time NSCAA/adidas Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Wingert (Babylon, N.Y.) caps off a tremendous season by winning college soccer's top individual honor. In 2003, he helped lead St. John's to the NCAA title game, where the Red Storm lost 2-1 to Indiana. St. John's finished the regular season ranked No. 2 in the final NSCAA/adidas National Rankings.
Wingert scored five goals and added five assists during the 2003 season and earned several honors. For the second consecutive season he was named the Big East Defensive Player of the Year and NSCAA/adidas All-America first-team honors. He is a member of the United States Men's U-23 National Team.
Wingert not only has excelled on the field, but in the classroom as well. He won the NSCAA/adidas Scholar Athlete of the Year, becoming the first player to win both National Player of the Year and Scholar Athlete of the Year in the same season. Wingert also becomes the first player from St. John's to win National Player of the Year honors.
The other two men's finalists were University of Maryland senior midfielder Sumed Ibrahim (Tamale, Ghana) and Coastal Carolina senior forward Joseph Ngwenya (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe), the 2002 NSCAA/adidas Scholar Athlete of the Year.
An exhibition dedicated to the Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy featuring all former recipients of both the M.A.C. and Hermann trophies, the current winners, a replica of the Irish crystal trophy and the original Hermann Trophy is on display at the National Soccer Museum in Oneonta, N.Y. Additional information about the soccer Hall of Fame can be found at www.soccerhall.org.

"We're comfortable again. Now that they've told us a coach will be in place soon, he's definitely coming to UCLA."
-- Jack Zaher, father of Mike Zaher, who committed verbally to play for the Bruins. UCLA reportedly has narrowed its field of candidates to three: UCLA assistant coach Jorge Salcedo, Loyola Marymount coach Paul Krumpe and former Los Angeles Galaxy assistant coach Ralph Perez. (The Daily Bruin)
