6. St. Mary’s fills vacancies

St, Mary's filled its vacancies when it promoted former UCLA player Adam Cooper from assistant to head coach of the men’s program and hired former U.S. women’s national team defender Kelly Lindsey from Texas, where she was the top assistant, to head the women’s program.
Cooper, the sixth head coach in the 28 years of the Gaels’ men's program, succeeds Steve Rammel, who became the Los Angeles Galaxy’s assistant coach.
Lindsey, who had played for the nearby San Jose CyberRays in the WUSA, replaces Paul Sapsford.

5. Sanchez lands UNLV job

Following Akron men’s head coach Ken Lolla’s departure for Louisville, assistant Mario Sanchez has left the Zips, No. 1 in the final Soccer America rankings of the 2005 regular season, to become the men’s head coach at UNLV, where he replaces long-time coach Barry Barto.
“Mario was instrumental in the success of the Akron men’s soccer program, and his enthusiasm and drive for success is exactly what we want here at UNLV,” said UNLV athletic director Mike Hamrick.
Sanchez was an assistant coach at Fresno State from 1999-2003 until the school dropped the men’s soccer program. He played for the Bulldogs and was a third round draft pick of the Kansas City Wizards in 1998.

COACHING MOVES
4. Ficken retires at Colombia

Dieter Ficken, who led Columbia to the NCAA Division I Men’s Tournament 11 times and the final four twice, has retired after 27 years as the Lions coach.
Ficken, who was capped once for the USA (World Cup qualifier against Mexico in 1972), was named the 1983 Coach of the Year after leading Columbia to the NCAA Division I final, where it lost to Indiana, 1-0, in double overtime. He had a 252-139-53 career record. Ficken also served as Region I ODP coach, working with many players in the 1980s who went on to make the U.S. national team.
Former MLS player Kevin Anderson, the Colombia assistant, will serve as interim coach.

AWARDS
1. Hermann Trophy winners to be announced

The 2005 Hermann Trophy winners will be announced Friday at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT.
The three men's finalists are Maryland's Jason Garey (the 2005 Soccer America Men’s Player of the Year), Indiana's Brian Plotkin and New Mexico's Jeff Rowland. On the women's side, it's Portland's Christine Sinclair (the 2005 Soccer America Women’s Player of the Year), Notre Dame's Katie Thorlakson and Penn State's Tiffany Weimer. If Sinclair, the heavy favorite, is selected, it would mark only the third time that a female player has won the award in consecutive years. North Carolina's Mia Hamm and Cindy Parlow are the only ones to achieve the feat thus far.
The announcement will be made at the Missouri Athletic Club (405 Washington Avenue in St. Louis). The news conference will air live on ESPNews. The Hermann Trophy dinner afterwards is open to the public. Reservations can be made by calling (314) 539-4470.

MLS signs Hermann Trophy winner Garey

NEW YORK (AP) -- Jason Garey signed with Major League Soccer on Wednesday after leading Maryland to its first NCAA soccer title in 37 years and winning the Hermann Trophy, given to the top college player.

MLS also announced the signings of midfielders Brian Plotkin of Indiana and Mehdi Ballouchy of Santa Clara, and forward Yura Movsisyan of Pasadena City College. All are eligible for the MLS SuperDraft on Jan. 20 in Philadelphia.

The four are among 74 players scheduled to participate at the MLS Combine, which runs from Thursday to Sunday in Carson, Calif.

Garey led the nation with 22 goals last season and completed his career as the Terrapins' leading scorer with 60. Maryland beat New Mexico 1-0 for the NCAA title on Dec. 12.

Plotkin helped Indiana to consecutive NCAA titles in 2003 and 2004, and Ballouchy is a former member of Morocco's under-17 team. Movsisyan is an 18-year-old from Azerbaijan who scored 18 goals for Pasadena City College last season.
