In the NAIA quarterfinals, #9 seed Hastings College (Neb.) pulled off a 2-1 upset over #1 seed Rio Grande, a team with 17 European players, mostly from England.

This is nice to see, since Hastings only has one player who didn't attend high school in the US. Most of the kids come from states where there are very few DI teams, but hopefully at least a couple of them can use this as a springboard. Their top two scorers are both freshman: Brian Steinert (Aurora, CO) and Nedim Hasanbegovic (Omaha, NE).

1. WHAT THEY'RE SAYING

"You cannot simulate that kind of speed. [Santa Clara coach] Jerry Smith told me you're going to be in for a tornado. Not only does North Carolina have great athletes but they also have great soccer players.
-- Pepperdine coach Tim Ward on North Carolina, which pounded the Waves, 6-0, in the third round of the NCAA Division I Women’s Tournament.

“If she ever scores another one of those, I’ll be shocked. I like to call those shosses. It
was halfway a cross and halfway a shot. She just drilled the ball across, and it happened to hit the far post upper-corner. It was a great goal."
-- Cal coach Kevin Boyd on Florida State defender Kelly Rowland's opening goal in the 'Noles' 2-1 win over the Bears in the third round of the NCAA Division I Women's Tournament.

MEN'S TOURNAMENT WATCH
2. Big East teams sweep six

Eoin Lynch scored a golden goal in the 96th minute to give Providence a 1-0 win at Hofstra in the first round of the NCAA Division I Men’s Tournament.
The Friars, making their first tournament appearance since 1983, were one of only three teams to win on the road in the first round. Wisconsin-Milwaukee beat Bradley, 2-0, in Peoria, Ill., and Stony Brook edged Yale, 2-1, in New Haven, Conn., on Adam Ciklic’s goal in the 94th minute.
Providence was one of six Big East teams to win in the first round, along with Notre Dame, St. John’s, Seton Hall, South Florida and West Virginia.
All-American Sacha Kljestan set up two first-half goals to lead Seton Hall past Hartwick, 2-1. Sophomore Simon Schoendorf did one better, setting up all three goals for South Florida in the Bulls’ 3-0 win over Stetson.
West Virginia’s 1-0 win over Robert Morris marked the first time since 1981 the Mountaineers had reached the second round.
Connecticut earned a bye into the second round, giving the Big East seven teams in the NCAA Tournament.
Clemson and Wake Forest won first-round games to leave all eight ACC teams alive in the tournament, which resumes with second-round play Tuesday.

WOMEN'S TOURNAMENT HEROES
3. UNC's White breaks record with five assists

Kacey White set an NCAA Division I Women’s Tournament record with five assists in North Carolina’s 6-0 win over Pepperdine.
White's five assists broke the record that had been held by four Tar Heel players
For the second straight game, North Carolina’s Lindsay Tarpley had a hat trick, giving her 16 career goals in the NCAA Tournament, one more than Mia Hamm’s previous UNC record. Tarpley had one assist, extending her own NCAA career record for assists in tournament games to 18. She trails only Christine Sinclair of Portland in goals and points in NCAA games. Sinclair has 23 goals and six assists and 52 points in NCAA matches.
Tiffany Weimer tied a Penn State record for points in a game with 10 in the Nittany Lions’ 4-1 victory over Texas A&M. Her hat trick, the fourth of her career, gives her 31 goals for the season and 90 in her career.
Freshman Kerri Hanks scored two goals and senior Katie Thorlakson had three assists in Notre Dame’s 5-2 win over Yale to give them 71 and 70 points, respectively, for the season. The only other set of teammates to score 70 or more points in a season is SMU’s Danielle Garrett (83 points) and Courtney Linex (77) in 1995.
Kara Lang, the Canadian national team star, scored two goals in UCLA’s 4-0 win over Marquette, She has six goals in three tournament games after scoring only nine goals in the regular season.
Two other freshman strikers had big games. Jess Rostedt scored her team-high 12th goal of the season to help Virginia beat Cal State Fullerton, 2-1. Megan Rapinoe also has 12 goals after scoring twice in Portland's 4-0 win over Arizona.

4. Lynn's Scroggins ties record

NCAA D2 MEN. Lee Paul Scroggins scored two goals in Lynn’s 8-0 victory over Lander to tie an NCAA Division II record for goals in a tournament with six. Lynn joins top-ranked Ft. NCAA D3 MEN. Messiah improved to 22-0-0 with a 5-0 win over Maryville (Tenn.) and a 3-0 victory over the College of New Jersey. Gustavus Adolphus, Plattsburgh State and Whitworth complete this weekend's final four field in Greensboro, N.C.
NAIA MEN. Hastings upset top seed Rio Grande, 2-0, in the quarterfinals of the National Championships. Chris Ladwig thwarted the Redmen with an outstanding effort in goal for the Nebraska school, which faces Azusa Pacific in Monday’s semifinals. Southern Nazarene and Lindsey Wilson also square off in Daytona Beach, Fla.
NCAA D2 WOMEN. Defending champion Metro State’s perfect season ended when Seattle Pacific ousted the Roadrunners, 5-4, in a shootout after their game ended in a 0-0 tie. The Falcons advance to the final four in Wichita Falls, Texas, along with Nebraska-Omaha, Carson-Newman and Franklin Pierce.
NCAA D3 WOMEN. Messiah needed a shootout to beat Trinity (Texas) and join its men’s team at the Division III final fours in Greensboro. The result, which is recorded as a tie, leaves the College of New Jersey (21-0-0) as the only unbeaten and untied team left in the tournament. TCNJ and Messiah meet Tufts and Chicago, respectively, in the semifinals.
NAIA WOMEN. Janaina Novaes scored her 29th goal of the season and Danielle McCullough added the winning goal as Lee knocked No. 2 seed Graceland, 2-1, in the quarterfinals of the National Championships. MEN’S TOURNAMENT WATCH
1. Indiana ousted by Notre Dame

Two-time defending champion Indiana’s reign is over.
The Hoosiers fell to Notre Dame, 2-0, Tuesday night in the second round of the NCAA Division I Men’s Tournament.
Chris Cahill was outstanding in goal for the Irish, who had fallen to IU, 3-0, earlier in the season at home. After absorbing first-half pressure, Notre Dame got goals from Justin McGeeney and Joe Lapira.
"We were ready to come out and play, especially after the way they came to our place and gave us a beating,” said Notre Dame coach Bobby Clark. “A few weeks ago they gave us a comprehensive beating. It was nice to come back to their place to try to even the score.”
It was the third time Indiana came up short in its bid to win three straight titles. Only Virginia (1991-94) has won three or more consecutive NCAA Division I men’s titles.
Indiana, the No. 3 seed, wasn’t the only power to fall.
UC Santa Barbara, which fell to the Hoosiers in last year’s Men’s College Cup final, lost at Big West rival Cal State Northridge, 2-1.
Perhaps the biggest surprise took place in Los Angeles, where No. 5 seed UCLA fell to SMU, 3-0. The Bruins had not allowed a goal at home all season.
No. 6 Duke, which also reached last year’s Men’s College Cup semifinals, lost to Creighton, 2-1. The Bluejays came back from 1-0 down after a quarter of an hour to win on a pair of second-half goals.
Seven of the 14 seeds in action on Tuesday lost. Other seeds to fall were No. 10 Old Dominion, No. 12 Virginia Tech, No. 14 N.C. State and No. 16 Dartmouth.
No. 2 New Mexico needed penalty kicks to beat Wisconsin-Milwaukee before a record UNM Soccer Complex crowd of 4,552 in Albuquqerque. The Lobos trailed 2-0 after six minutes before rallying to tie the score, 2-2.
The wildest game was at Virginia, where the Cavaliers also trailed by two goals early in the game before beating South Florida in a shootout. The game ended 4-4 with all eight goals coming in the first 54 minutes.
California and UNC Greensboro also advanced in shootouts after both their games ended in scoreless draws.
If ever there was a day that made the case for moving college soccer to the spring, Tuesday was the day.
The weather was so bad at Connecticut and Akron that their second-round games had to be postponed until Wednesday.
Wind gusts reached as high as 45 miles per hour at St. John’s, where the Red Storm edged Dartmouth, 1-0. There were snow flurries at Virginia Tech, where only 461 fans braved the conditions to watch the Hokies fall to UNC Greensboro in a shootout.

PROFILE
2. SMU freshman da Silva on fire

The hottest player in men’s college soccer is Brazilian-born Paulo da Silva.
The Dallas Texans product scored both goals in SMU’s 2-1 win over San Francisco in the first round of the NCAA Division I Tournament, and he scored one goal and had assists on the other two Mustang goals in their 3-0 victory at UCLA Tuesday.
Not bad for a freshman who had started only once in the regular season.
"He's finally getting in shape," SMU coach Schellas Hyndman told the Dallas Morning-News after the USF game. "For younger players, it's an adjustment to make getting ready for college soccer."
Da Silva played in the Santos youth program before moving to Arlington, Texas, where he starred for Oakridge High School.

I can't believe my beloved Indiana Hoosiers got upset so early in the tourny.

. Three ACC teams move into men’s final eight

Three ACC teams, including top seed Maryland, will host NCAA Division I Men’s Tournament quarterfinals after winning games over the weekend.
Maryland hosts Akron, ranked No. 1 in the final Soccer America Top 25 of the regular season but seeded ninth.
No. 4 seed North Carolina faces SMU, and Clemson hosts Creighton.
The three ACC schools are the only teams left who have won national championships.
Akron won in a shootout over Connecticut, No. 2 in the final Soccer America rankings, after they played to a 3-3 tie. Creighton and SMU both won on the road for the second straight game.
No. 2 seed New Mexico hosts No. 7 California in the other quarterfinal. It’s the first appearance in the final eight for the Lobos and Golden Bears, who both set school attendance records with crowds of 4,849 and 4,207, respectively.

2. Carolina again denied spot at Women’s College Cup

Three of the four No. 1 seeds reached the Women’s College Cup, which will be played Dec. 2-4 in College Station.
Portland, Penn State and UCLA won on Friday to advance the semifinals.
The big surprise is No. 2 seed Florida State, which knocked off North Carolina in a shootout. It marked the second straight year the Tar Heels failed to reach the semifinals after 22 straight appearances in the final four.
