UNSUNG HEROES
2. Bertoni’s patience pays off
Being stuck as backup goalie is one of the most difficult situations for a college soccer player. Each season on the bench until the starter graduates can mean a year of eligibility lost.
Ryan Bertoni, who won a New York state high school title as a senior at Oswego Free Academy, arrived at Binghamton University in 2003 to discover that the Bearcats had also signed 22-year-old Scotsman Stefan Gonet.
Gonet’s 0.38 goals-against average was the lowest in the country in 2003 but he left after the 2004 season to return to Scotland, where he signed for Second Division club Morton. Bertoni, meanwhile, didn’t play in 2003 and was used in the field for eight of his nine appearances in 2004.
With Gonet gone, Bertoni won the starting job in goal and has a 0.59 goals-against average in 10 starts. Binghamton is 7-2-1 and one of the favorites to win the America East title.
"He's been great,” Graham Munro, the two-time America East Defensive Player of the Year, told the Binghamton Press & Sun, “especially in some big games."
3. Bruch’s back!
Jessie Bruch could not have picked a better time to score her first two goals of the 2005 season.
Bruch, who led Nebraska with nine goals and 19 points as a freshman in 2003 and didn't play in 2004, broke out of a season-long slump to score two second-half goals on headers off corner kicks to lead the Huskers to a 2-1 victory at Colorado Friday night in their Big 12 opener.
Bruch sat the 2004 season after suffering an ACL tear and admits she was relieved to score again after starting out 2005 with no goals in eight games.
Bruch’s return is a big plus for the 6-3-0 Huskers, who have been hit hard by injuries.
Freshman Lindsay Poehling was injured in the Colorado game and may be out for the season. Freshman Ali Lokanc, sophomore Sari Raber and senior Aly Scace are all out for the season with injuries.
“It was a fantastic effort,” Nebraska coach John Walker said of the win over Colorado. “It was a very difficult game.”

MEN'S WEEKEND WRAPUP
1. Unbeaten Carolina falls at Virginia
HEELS’ DROUGHT. No. 2 North Carolina fell to Virginia, 2-0, Saturday night before 3,104 fans to extend its losing streak in Charlottesville to 14 games. Adam Cristman and German freshman Yannick Reyering both scored for the Cavs, giving them 13 goals between them in nine games.
BEARS FALL TWICE. No. 3 California dropped its first two games of the season, both Pac-10 contests. After falling to UCLA, 2-0, on goals by former U.S. U-20 star Marvell Wynne and former U-17 defender Jordan Harvey, the Bears lost to San Diego State, 1-0, on Dennis Sanchez’s goal with two seconds remaining in regulation.
ZIPPING ALONG. No. 4 Akron improved to 9-0-0 with a 3-0 victory over No. 22 Ohio State Friday night before 2,319 fans at Jackson Field. Akron and idle No. 1 New Mexico (8-0-0) are the only unbeaten and untied teams in NCAA Division I men’s soccer. Also unbeaten are San Diego State (7-0-2), No. 20 Missouri State (7-0-2), No. 24 San Diego (5-0-2) and unranked Providence (4-0-5). Besides UNC and Cal, No. 5 Indiana and No. 12 Fairleigh Dickinson also lost this weekend for the first time this season.
WOMEN’S WEEKEND WRAPUP
2. Marquette pulls huge upset
ON TARGET. No. 18 Marquette pulled one of the biggest upsets of the women’s season when it beat No. 5 Notre Dame, 4-1, Friday night in front of a record-setting crowd of 2,034 at Valley Fields. Notre Dame had a 24-5 edge in shots in the Big East clash, but the Golden Eagles were perfect with four goals on four shots on goal. The Irish were playing goalie Erika Bohn and defensive midfielder Jill Krivacek, both out with injuries.
BAY AREA UPSET. Former U.S. U-19 star Rachel Buehler picked the perfect time to score her first collegiate goal. The sophomore scored to give No. 19 Stanford a 1-0 victory over neighboring Santa Clara, beating the No. 6 Broncos for only the seventh time in the 28-game series. Buehler came back two days later to score in the Cardinal’s 2-0 victory over Colorado College and take the Stanford Nike Invitational.
BRANDI CHASE. Scoring machines Tiffany Weimer and Christine Sinclair kept up their chase for Brandi Chastain’s NCAA Division I women’s record of 15 straight games with at least one goal. Weimer scored both goals for No. 3 Penn State in the 2-1 win over Northwestern and also scored in the 2-1 overtime win at Wisconsin to extend her streak to 12 games. Sinclair tallied the first goal for No. 2 Portland in the 5-0 victory at 0-8-3 Washington and scored the golden goal that gave the Pilots a 2-1 victory over Oregon State. The Canadian has scored in all 11 games this season.
CROWD COUNT

Paul Gardner Article on ESPN.NEWS
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://soccernet.espn.go.com/column...root=us&cc=5901
He also argues that maybe US soccer would be better served if MLS takes over youth development on a team-by-team basis. That's a good idea but it would be expensive. It would better use of the reserve MLS games than the current use of 22 and 23 year old college trained players who still are not ready for the pros. Anywhere else in the world, someone is a seasoned professional at that age.
