Teams determined for NCAA College Cup semifinals
The Associated Press
12/7/03 9:44 PM
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Indiana faces Santa Clara in the semifinal round of the NCAA College Cup soccer tournament, while St. John's takes on Maryland in the other semifinal game.
Both matches are scheduled for Friday at Columbus Crew Stadium. The championship will be Sunday.
Indiana (13-3-5) upset top-seeded 2002 champion UCLA (18-2-1) at home 2-1 on Saturday to advance. The Hoosiers will be making their 16th College Cup appearance.
Santa Clara (15-3-4) beat Michigan 3-1 Saturday, behind two goals by Kalachi Igwe. The Broncos will be making their fifth trip to the semifinals.
St. John's (16-5-3) overcame a two goal deficit to beat Creighton (12-6-4) 3-2 on Sunday. The Red Storm will be making their second Final Four appearance in three years and third in program history.
The quarterfinal game was originally scheduled to be held at St. John's, but was moved to the University of Maryland due to inclement weather hammering the Northeast.
Maryland (20-2-1) defeated St. Louis (15-4-3) 4-2 on Sunday, also overcoming a two-goal deficit and scoring four goals in 11 minutes. The Terps advance to the College Cup for the second consecutive season.

"We want to have a look at this young man because he is said to be
very brilliant."
-- Zimbabwe national team general manager Rafiq Adam on Coastal
Carolina star Joseph Ngwenya. Zimbabwe is looking to bring Ngwenya,
the leading scorer in NCAA Division I the last two years, in for the
Warriors' 2004 Africans National Cup preparations in December.
(Harare Herald)
"We have a pretty good idea if our teams are going to be good or not.
... We're hoping to host a regional for women's gymnastics, and [the
season] hasn't even started. We were on the bubble -- and I think
[Coach Steve Burns] would agree with this -- that we would be
selected in the first place. And then we were shocked that we got a
first-round bye and that we were selected to host in the second
round."
-- Mike Stevenson, executive associate athletic director at Michigan,
whose men's soccer team did not host its quarterfinal match against
Santa Clara because before the tournament started, Michigan's
athletic department opted not to request a home game in that round.
(The Michigan Daily)
"You can say we screwed up, or, more realistically, you can say that
we had no expectation that our team would advance that far.
Obviously, we wish we would have [put in a bid]. We would like to
have as many of our teams play at home as we possibly can."
-- Stevenson. (The Michigan Daily)
