Penn State Men's Soccer Opens Season With Tie Versus No. 6 North Carolina
Devlin notches first goal of season, Taylor makes collegiate debut in goal
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (Sept. 3, 2004) - Junior Brian Devlin (Philadelphia, Pa.) notched his first goal of the season and freshman Conrad Taylor (Colorado Springs, Colo.) stopped five shots to help the Penn State men's soccer team to a 1-1 tie versus No. 6 North Carolina in both teams' season openers Friday night at the Ohio State Classic.

Devlin slammed home a pass from freshman Richard Costanzo (Jefferson Hills, Pa.) from four yards out to tie the game at 1-1 at the 56.37 mark. Senior Chad Severs (Ocean City, N.J.) also received an assist on the play.
"It was a good game, and we really should have won it," said Penn State head coach Barry Gorman. "We had a lot of good chances. North Carolina had a good start after the second half began. We were flat coming out for the second half. But the guys responded well and we had a number of good performances."
The Tar Heels came out firing to begin the seco ndhalf.Theytook the lead when Corey Ashe scored from four yards out off a pass from Marcus Storey.
The Nittany Lions outshot North Carolina 19-10 in the game and had six corner kicks to two for the Tar Heels.
Taylor made his collegiate debut and stopped five shots, including one in the second overtime, to help preserve the tie for Penn State.
"Taylor played very well," Gorman said. "He was very solid and very composed. He did well."
"I think midfielders David Walters (Hunlock Creek, Pa.) and Devlin played exceptionally well," Gorman added. "We also had good performances out of defensemen Pasi Karppinen (Kuopio, Finland) and Markku Viitanen (Pirkkala, Finland). Severs, Simon Omekanda (Rochester Hills, Mich.), Mike Lindemann (Yardley, Pa.) and Joe Zewe (North Versailles, Pa.) also had solid enough performances. They just have to get their scoring touches back. Costanzo had good game for a freshman."
