2006 Carolina Challenge Cup
The Charleston Battery will host the third annual Carolina Challenge Cup March 18 – 25 at Blackbaud Stadium, Daniel Island. The 2006 pre-season tournament will feature 2004 MLS Cup Champions DC United, Major League Soccer's Red-Bull New York, the Houston Dynamo and the USL First Division Charleston Battery.

DC United's 16-year old soccer sensation Freddy Adu is expected to make a return visit to the tournament. Tickets are on sale now priced at $15 – $25; discounts are available for series tickets (includes all 6 games) and for 2006 Charleston Battery season ticket holders.

3. MLS PRESEASON: Red Bulls struggle; Dallas downs Atlas

The New York Red Bulls became the first MLS team to lose to USL club Charleston Battery in the three-year history of the Carolina Challenge Cup, falling 1-0 on a Ben Hollingsworth goal, after losing its opener to D.C. United 1-0. Red Bulls coach Mo Johnston told mlsnet.com: "I thought Eddie Gaven played well. Tony Meola, this whole preseason, has been magnificent. Other than that, we had nothing." ... Also at the Carolina Challenge Cup, Houston's Dwayne De Rosario and Ricardo Clark were ejected in a 1-1 tie with D.C. United. Red Bulls Taylor Graham and Youri Djorkaeff were ejected in their 1-0 loss to D.C. United.

The Charleston Battery has agreed to terms with four new players for the 2006 USL First Division season. Midfielder Luke Vercollone arrives in Charleston after spending the last two years with Major League Soccer’s New England Revolution, defender Chris Corcoran joins the Battery after spending the 2005 season with MLS’s MetroStars, Jeff Matteo comes to the Battery from USL 1 rival, the Minnesota Thunder, and Turks and Caicos national team forward Gavin Glinton also signs after impressing during pre-season.

Charleston Battery to host three weeks of player trials

Charleston SC. The Charleston Battery has set dates for three player trials. The first session is January 19 – 21. A second trial will be held February 2 – 4 with the final session set for March 2 – 4. This will be the fifth year that the Battery will hold player trials. The Battery has consistently used its player trials as a source for new players; in 2006 the Battery signed five players from its trials - Brandon Curran, Armando Romero, Anthony Catalano, Jordan Hughes and Lawrence Smith.

The Charleston Battery will host the fourth annual Carolina Challenge Cup March 24 - 31 at Blackbaud Stadium, Daniel Island. Current Major League Soccer champs the Houston Dynamo return for a second straight visit as does Red Bull New York, this season under the leadership of former US Men’s National Team head coach Bruce Arena. The third MLS side set to appear is the expansion franchise, Toronto FC who will play their first competitive games at Blackbaud Stadium during the pre-season tournament.
