Here is a good convo with the PR guy (Justin Swackhamer) who I know personally and the coach of the Rhinos (Laurie Calloway) and it is a guy haha!
Justin Swackhamer: Coach, how will this season's squad differ from the one you put on the pitch last season?
Laurie Calloway: We released some players that we didn't feel were part of the future, and we're looking for six or seven players to improve the squad. We need some creative midfield players and we need an intelligent, ‘pacey' player up front. We're talking to three players that fit into that category right now that will hopefully compliment (Matthew) Delicate, who was our leading goal scorer last year.
JS: How does the departure of Frankie Sanfilippo affect your defensive strategy this season?
LC: We're talking to three players that we feel will fill the loss of Sanfilippo and bring some experience to us as well.
JS: What is the current goaltending situation?
LC: I think we need to get a little more experience to challenge Vallow, and to that point we're very close.
JS: What characteristics do you look for in prospective players?
LC: Any player that is better than a player in our position is someone we want. If we are able to bring all the players in that we are talking to, then we will be a better squad.
JS: After losing in the USL-1 Championship match last season, do you feel any additional hunger to get back to the championship and win it this season?
LC: We said it was going to be a three-year program, but we would have liked to have done it in two. We came close to doing it in two. We wanted to make the playoffs in the second year and get close to the final, and we achieved that. Based on our own assessment of how long it would take to win a championship, this year is the year that we expect to win and anything less than that would be a disappointment. It was disappointing last year, but I think that based on the steps that we were taking to totally revamp the team, which we did in year one and two, from the old team that did so well in the ‘90s... we're moving in the right direction. It has taken that time for us to get the concepts, the methodologies, the system of play and the mentality through to the players and it's probably going to take a little while this year to bring those six or seven (new) players up to speed as well, but it's not like we're bringing in 11, 12 or 13 like we did last year. We're quite happy with where we're at, but we do want to win that championship.
JS: What do you hope that the players learned from their experience last season?
LC: Some of the players we brought in last year didn't understand the success that this city required, the fans and the media. They were all learning the part that they needed to play. They had not experienced the success. They were learning that. Hopefully, they will bring a much different approach in terms of their attitudes toward winning. They were a part of getting close last season and they will remember the frustration. Hopefully, that will bring the hunger back to the players and help us achieve success again. Last year was a very successful year, but success in any sport is measured in championships. Finishing second, no one ever remembers you.
