Thunder To Move More Central In ‘04
14-Year Franchise Looking At Number of Options in St. Paul, Minneapolis, Neighboring Suburbs
BLAINE, Minn. (Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003) – In an effort to meet its fans’ number-one request, the Minnesota Thunder professional soccer team will move into a more central location to play its A-League games in 2004, it was announced today by Thunder president and general manager Jim Froslid.

Founded in 1990, the second-division professional soccer team has played the majority of its games for 14 seasons at the National Sports Center in Blaine, located 15 miles north of Minneapolis.

“We have been observing the success of Jac Sperling and the Minnesota Wild, and what they have accomplished by making the fan the number-one priority,” Froslid said. “We intend to make the entire experience more enjoyable to the fan, and perhaps more importantly, beneficial on the community that decides to embrace us.”

Team officials are exploring a number of stadium options in St. Paul, Minneapolis and neighboring suburbs.

The Thunder’s attendance at the NSC has increased 13 of its 14 seasons, averaging 4,101-per game in 2003, but surveys over the past three years have indicated that fans would attend more games if the team played in a more central location. A more central move also brings the Thunder closer to the some of the largest ethnic communities in the Twin Cities, and places them on a public transportation line, a benefit it didn’t have in Blaine.

The team plans to announce a new season ticket campaign in the coming days to rally fans behind the news of the move, according to Thunder director of Sales and Marketing TJ Varecka.

The Thunder is contractually obligated to play its remaining 2003 playoff matches at the NSC. The team opens a home-and-home, total-goals playoff series in Milwaukee tomorrow night, and will host the second leg Sunday, Sept. 7 at the NSC (5 p.m. kickoff). If the Thunder wins the Milwaukee series, then it will advance to the Western Conference finals and host the winner of Seattle-Vancouver in a similar format on Sunday, Sept. 14, at 4 p.m., at the NSC.

The Minnesota Thunder, founded in 1990, is a professional soccer franchise that plays in the Western Conference of the 19-team A-League. The Thunder's home schedule runs May through September. Information on single-game and season tickets, as well as youth camps, can be found on the team's website www.mnthunder.com or by calling 763-785-3668.

Thunder Steal Thunder At Annual USL Meetings

Team Receives 2003 Organization of the Year; George, Lagos, Engstrom, Club Inducted Into Hall of Fame

BLAINE, Minn. (Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003) – The Minnesota Thunder walked away with an unprecedented six awards at the United Soccer League’s annual operations meetings in Tampa this past weekend, it was announced today by league officials.

In addition to winning the league’s top honor -- the 2003 Organization of the Year -- the Thunder was represented in five USL Hall of Fame inductee awards. Thunder owner Bill George, head coach Buzz Lagos, and the organization were honored for its 10 years of service and contribution to the growth of the USL and the sport. Lagos, along with former general manager Tom Engstrom, were also inducted as founders of the club.

“Teams do not win hall of fame awards without loyal fans,” said Thunder president and general manager Jim Froslid. “The Thunder is fortunate to have great fans. We are also fortunate and need to recognize the impact that Bill George, coach Lagos, Tom Engstrom and all the past players and staff have had on this organization over the years. This is a great honor for our club, perhaps the greatest.”

The Thunder was founded by Lagos and Engstrom in 1990 and entered the USL in 1994 after four seasons as an amateur team. Since then, the team has reached five finals, four in the A-League, and won the 1999 A-League Championship. The team is one of the most successful in USL history with a regular season record of 161-76-13, and a post-season mark of 35-13-2, all under the ownership of George and tutelage of Lagos.

Off the field, the club has been one of USL’s leaders in attendance and marketing.

The club was recognized separately as the Organization of the Year, marking the second time (first in 1996) that the team has won the league’s top award. The Organization of the Year award is based on overall operations, including marketing, attendance, management, sportsmanship, facilities, and professionalism on and off the field.

This club seems like it is being run very well. Some other A-league clubs should take notice.

Thunder negotiating to play near DowntownBy Scott RussellThe Minnesota Thunder, the state's men's professional soccer team, is negotiating with the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board to build a permanent soccer facility at Lowry Hill's Parade Stadium. The facility would open as early as 2006, a Park Board official said.

Thunder President Ken Froslid, a Southwest Minneapolis resident, said the team is also looking at a St. Paul site.

"We will be talking to both cities about a long-term project," Froslid said. "The goal is to have something soccer-specific, not only for the Thunder to play in but the community - high school teams, ethnic teams, international games. That is the vision."

"There is a lot of excitement about getting soccer into the city."

The Park Board is expected to discuss the idea at its Wednesday, Nov. 19 meeting.

Don Siggelkow, the Park Board's assistant superintendent for administration and finance, said a Parade soccer complex could include a 3,000- to 5,000-seat soccer stadium that would cost $4 million to $6 million. It would have expensive artificial grass to stand up to intensive use. Siggelkow said he had talked to the Thunder about playing at Parade.

Commissioner Jon Olson said the Park Board would not ask the Legislature for money for a multimillion-dollar soccer stadium. The Thunder would have to make its own case.

"We are not looking to build a stadium for the Thunder," he said. "If someone wants to do some development, we'll listen."

Froslid said it was premature to discuss funding.

The Thunder would weigh factors such as parking, freeway access and proximity to "hot pockets" of soccer players in choosing a permanent site, he said.

The Thunder plays 15 to 20 home games a year, most from late May through July - and draws between 3,000 to 4,000 fans per game, Froslid said.

The Thunder has played at the National Sports Center in Blaine but has terminated its lease. Froslid said the team wanted to have a location more central to the soccer-playing communities. It also wanted to embrace the Twin Cities' ethnic communities.

The Thunder is looking for a temporary site at which to play until it can find a permanent home. Froslid said the team soon would announce the site of its temporary home. The decision about its permanent home "is a long way away."

The Park Board discussed the issue Nov. 5, and several Park Board commissioners seemed supportive. Thunder players or staff could hold soccer workshops for area youth, they said. Commissioners also raised concerns. The new soccer complex at Parade would displace the Park Board's premier softball field. Softball would need a new home.

Commissioner Vivian Mason said the Park Board could relocate the top-line softball field to Bryn Mawr Park, 1905 Mt. View Ave.

The Park Board would engage the Minneapolis School Board and Blake High School to review options to develop the facility as a home field to high school soccer games, Siggelkow wrote to the board Oct. 29.

"Our youth teams and traveling teams would have a stadium soccer complex for tournaments, games and practices."

Mason represents the Parade area and supported the idea. "Parade would go back to serving more youth than we do now," she said. "I think it's great."

Parade Stadium used to house the city's premier football field for high school teams.

The Park Board is not eying the soccer stadium as a big moneymaker, Siggelkow said. The proposal comes at a critical juncture, however. The nearby Guthrie Theater is relocating to its new riverfront center in 2006, and Guthrie patrons had provided Park Board parking money.

The Park Board has several parking lots around Parade, totaling 683 stalls. The Walker is opening a new underground parking ramp to serve its soon-to-expand museum. The Park BOard plans to do a new Master Plan for Parade, Siggelkow said.

The soccer complex could help recoup lost Guthrie parking revenue, Siggelkow said.

At $5 a spot, it would raise at most $3,400 per game.

The Park Board could also negotiate for a cut of concession sales, Siggelkow said.

The Thunder has existed since 1990 and in 1994 it joined the United Soccer League. It is the third professional soccer team in the state, following the Kicks and the Strikers. Froslid said the team has not made a profit. "Very close," he said.

Thunder Move to St. Paul 24/11/03

The Minnesota Thunder professional soccer team announced today that it has formed a partnership with Saint Paul Public Schools and will move its home to St. Paul Central High's James Griffin Stadium (Interstate I-94 and Lexington Parkway) for the 2004 season.

"We are excited to move into the center of the Twin Cities," said Jim Froslid, Thunder president and general manager. "We have received a warm welcome from Superintendent Pat Harvey and Mayor Randy Kelly. They are committed to helping us bring the world's most popular sport to a larger, more diverse fan base, while maintaining our positive impact on children."

The Thunder's new partnership will have a positive impact on elementary, middle and high school students within the Saint Paul Public School District. The Thunder players will focus on the importance of teamwork, education and healthy lifestyles while conducting clinics and school assemblies.

"I am extremely excited to have the Minnesota Thunder play their home games in one of our stadiums and to provide the opportunity for players and coaches to get involved in our schools," said Harvey. "I can't tell you how many times I've driven by one of our schools and seen studentsplaying pick-up soccer games. It will mean a great deal to students to see soccer being played at its highest level and to meet players who spread the positive messages of working hard and staying in school."

The team has launched a new season ticket campaign called the "Center Circle," giving fans a chance to receive any 2004 flexible ticket pack for the 2003 price. All fans entering the "Center Circle" before Dec. 31, 2003, will receive a free 2004 Thunder calendar. For more information visit www.mnthunder.com <http://www.mnthunder.com>.

The new stadium environment will include an international food tent, an interactive soccer zone for kids, live international music and a special area to host corporate groups and season ticket holders, according to Froslid.

The move brings the Thunder closer to the large ethnic communities of Hispanic, Somali and Hmong, where soccer is the number-one sport. The team's new home will be on two public transportation lines (Metro Transit #16 and #21), a benefit it didn't have in Blaine.

"This will be an excellent family-friendly addition to the entertainment palette Saint Paul offers to our community," Kelly said. "As the world's most popular sport, soccer will be a fantastic draw to our many different ethnic community members."

With the move to St. Paul, the Thunder will renew its relationship with Thunder P.L.U.S. (Partnering for Leadership & Urban Success), a nonprofit that uses soccer as a vehicle to promote leadership skills among underserved urban youth.

The Thunder will likely play a handful of 2004 matches at other locations, including its home-opener at the Metrodome. Some other sites being considered are Macalester College, Eastview and Wayzata high schools, and perhaps an out-of-metro exhibition game. An exact schedule will likely be released after the first of the year.

"We intend to make the entire experience at Griffin very enjoyable and easy for the fan," said Froslid. "Our goal is to create an intimate atmosphere in a historic stadium environment."

The brick-facade Griffin Stadium was built in 1940 and seats approximately 5,000. A reported $700,000 was invested this past summer into the surface where a new, state-of-the-art synthetic grass (Sprinturf) was installed. The field will play 120 yards long by 65 yards wide.

The Thunder announced in early September that it will move from the National Sports Center in Blaine, its home for the past 14 years, in response to fan survey requests for a more centrally located stadium, seats closer to the field and improved concessions.

Hastings in Vikings stadium mix
BY CHARLEY WALTERS
Pioneer Press

Add Hastings to communities interested in becoming the home of for a Vikings stadium.

A private developer the Vikings consider legitimate recently notified the team that his group is interested in having it play on a site on the Mississippi River in Hastings. Commercial retail would be part the development plan. As with some of the other proposed stadium sites, there is an infrastructure problem.

• Minneapolis City Council president Paul Ostrow, Minnesota Thunder general manager Jim Froslid and Thunder owner Bill George met with the Vikings Monday. The trio would be strong advocates of a Major League Soccer franchise sharing a new stadium with the National Football League team.

Major League Soccer, which consists of 10 teams that play 15 home games, had an average attendance of 14,899 this season. A feasibility study shows that the Twin Cities have favorable demographics for an MLS team. The Vikings would view soccer as part of a stadium solution.

• Running back Michael Bennett, asked Monday if the Vikings, who have lost five of their past six games, ever wonder if maybe they are not so good after all: "Never, never, never. We still believe in each other."

• Vikings vice president of football operations Rob Brzezinski gets regular calls from out-of-work players looking for a job with Minnesota, but said the team believes there are no players available who can bail them out of their tailspin.

"We're just going to keep fighting with what we've got," he said Monday.

Said Vikings coach Mike Tice, embarrassed by Sunday's 48-17 loss in St. Louis, "Sometimes there are no changes to make."

• Vikings center Matt Birk, asked if the players remember last year's 48-23 humiliating loss to Seattle: "We've got too much going on here to worry about last year." The Seahawks play Sunday at the Metrodome.

• Former Minnesota Wild president Tod Leiweke is chief executive officer of the Seahawks, who have a 7-0 record at home this season but are 1-4 on the road.

• Fifth-year senior Ben Johnson, who scored 32 points in the Gophers' overtime basketball victory over Furman Sunday, received a scholarship worth $31,000 annually during his two years at Northwestern. Because of the Big Ten's transfer rule, Johnson cannot receive financial aid for basketball at Minnesota, meaning it has cost him approximately $12,500 annually for room, books and tuition for his three seasons with the Gophers.

Standing Room Only Crowd Sees Thunder Throttle Edmonton 3-0

Castellanos Scores Two Goals

July 24, 2004 (St. Paul, Minn.) –

The Minnesota Thunder easily handled visiting Edmonton FC 3-
0 Saturday evening at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota in
front of a standing room only crowd of 5,109. Because Macalester’s
stadium holds only 4,200 people, fans crowded onto the track that
surrounds the field, creating an intimidating atmosphere for the
Aviators.

The Thunder next play at home on August 4th versus the San Jose
Earthquakes of Major League Soccer in the fourth round of the U.S.
Open Cup. With the increasing number of fans seen at home games and
the already brisk pace of ticket sales for the August 4th game a
sellout is expected. Order your tickets now to ensure your spot at
this historic game, as the Thunder make their first-ever appearance
in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Cup. The Thunder advanced to
the quarterfinals after defeating the Los Angeles Galaxy (MLS) 1-0.
Tickets can be purchased by visiting www.mnthunder.com or by calling
the Thunder office at 651-917-8326.

Forward David Castellanos scored two goals and midfielder Marco
Ferruzzi chipped in a goal and an assist in leading the Thunder to
the 3-0 win over Edmonton. Goalkeeper Joe Warren made three saves
in securing his A-League leading 12th shutout.

Thunder head coach Buzz Lagos was pleased with his team’s performance
and the outcome of the game.

“We went right at them right away and created several great chances
for goals. Melvin [Tarley] had some chances, David [Castellanos] had
some chances, but we couldn’t quite put them away,” he said.

And indeed the Thunder did pressure the Edmonton defense early in the
game as both Tarley and Castellanos created excellent shots on goal
from the right side of the field. Tarley had his shot blocked by
Edmonton goalkeeper Nick Stankov in the 3rd minute and Castellanos’
shot rolled just wide of the goal in the 5th minute of play.

In the 34th minute Castellanos received the ball on the left side of
midfield and fed a pass to Godfrey Tenoff who helped the ball along
to a streaking Ferruzzi. Ferruzzi took his first touch towards the
Edmonton goal and then drilled a low shot from 30 yards past a diving
Stankov into the left corner of the goal to put the Thunder up 1-0.

“We got a gorgeous goal with a combination pass in the midfield from
Godfrey Tenoff and Marco,” said coach Lagos, “and that gave us an
important lead.”

The Thunder dominated play in the first half with nine shots on goal
to Edmonton’s single attempt. The Thunder also had four corners in
the first half, while Edmonton was awarded only one.

The second half continued in much the same way the first half ended,
with the Thunder dominating possession and play.

“[In the] Second half we came out strong again, dominated, and didn’t
let them get across the midfield much, we got our second goal, our
third goal and basically put the game away,” said coach Lagos.

In the 52nd minute Freddy Juarez brought down a long outlet pass on
the left side of the field and carried the ball deep into the
Edmonton goal box. Juarez beat one player near the end line and then
fed a pass across the goalmouth to a streaking Castellanos who hit a
low shot as he fell to the ground only to have it saved by Stankov.
The rebound, however, came directly back to Castellanos who was able
to hit a second shot, while lying on the ground, into the back of the
net for the 2-0 lead.

The Thunder increased their lead to three in the 70th minute when Jay
Alberts collected the ball on the left side of the field and drove a
long diagonal ball into the goal box that found the head of Marco
Ferruzzi, who directed the ball across the goal mouth to a wide open
Castellanos who easily slid the ball into the back of the net from
three yards.

Edmonton’s best chance to score in the game came in the 77th minute
of play when Nikola Vijnievic collected the ball just outside the
Thunder goal box. Vijnievic moved past one Thunder defender and hit a
curling shot that ricocheted off of the cross bar.

“We were able to make some substitutions, rest some players and get
some of the other guys some playing time,” said coach Lagos of the
second half.

The Thunder made five substitutions in the second half, which may
prove to be important as the Thunder prepares for next weekend in
which they will play three games in six days. The Thunder first
travels to New York to face the Rochester Raging Rhinos on Friday
(July 30) and then the Syracuse Salty Dogs on Saturday (July 31).
They will then return to Minnesota to prepare for their August 4 game
at James Griffin Stadium with the San Jose Earthquakes.

The win over Edmonton improves the Thunder’s A-League record to
10-4-3 (W-L-D).

1. TICKETS FOR AUGUST 4 SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES GAME SELLING QUICKLY
ST. PAUL, Minn. (Monday, July 26, 2004) - Nearly 1,000 tickets have already been sold for the Minnesota Thunder’s quarterfinal match-up with the San Jose Earthquakes (of Major League Soccer) on August 4, as fans prepare to watch one of the most important games in Thunder history. The game takes place at James Griffin Stadium in St. Paul and a near capacity crowd is expected, as the stadium holds only 6,000 fans. To order tickets, call the Thunder office at 651.917.8326 or visit www.mnthunder.com. Tickets range in price from $10 to $20.

The quarterfinal showing by the Thunder is its best ever in the annual U.S. Open Cup tournament. The Thunder advanced to face the Earthquakes after stunning the L.A. Galaxy 1-0 on July 20. The Earthquakes won the MLS Cup Championship both last year and in 2001 and are the home to World Cup star Landon Donovan.

2. MYSA PARADE FUELS STANDING ROOM ONLY CROWD ON SATURDAY
On Saturday (July 24) close to 2,000 people affiliated with the Minnesota Youth Soccer Association were in Macalester stadium one hour before the Thunder-Edmonton FC game to participate in the MYSA Chevy Cup opening ceremonies. Those fans created an intimidating atmosphere for the visiting Edmonton side, as a standing-room-only crowd surrounded the field to watch the game. In total, 5,105 fans attended Saturday’s match, making it the second largest crowd this season.

The Thunder shutout Edmonton as David Castellanos scored two goals and Marco Ferruzzi added a goal and an assist in leading the Thunder to a 3-0 victory. The win is the Thunder’s fourth in a row in A-League play and maintains its Western Conference second place tie with the Portland Timbers (33 points apiece). The Vancouver Whitecaps continue their first place hold on the conference (38 points) after crushing Milwaukee Wave United 4-0 over the weekend.

The Thunder travel to New York this upcoming weekend to face the Rochester Raging Rhinos on Friday, July 30 and the Syracuse Salty Dogs on Saturday, July 31. The Thunder defeated the Salty Dogs 2-0 at home on June 12, and have not yet faced the Raging Rhinos this season.

3. THUNDER SIGNS SEMIR MESANOVIC
The Minnesota Thunder acquired forward Semir Mesanovic, signing him to a two year deal. Mesanovic comes to the Thunder by way of the Major Indoor Soccer Leagues’ Milwuakee Wave United.

Mesanovic is a Bosnian native who moved to Canada in 1996. He began his pro career with the Toronto Croatians in 1999. He then spent time with Besiktas of the Turkish First Division and Osijek of the Croatian First Division before returning to Bosnia in 2002 to play for Sarajevo. Mesanovic played with the Indiana Blast in 2003 recording four goals and three assists. He has also been a member of the U-18, U-20 and U-23 Canadian National Teams.

Mesanovic has scored six goals in two exhibition games with the Thunder this season. Including the first five goals in a 7-0 thrashing of the Morelia Reserves.

4. AUGUST 14 GAME TO TAKE PLACE AT JAMES GRIFFIN STADIUM
The Saturday, August 14 game versus the Portland Timbers that had originally been scheduled to take place at Macalester College has been moved to James Griffin Stadium at I-94 & Lexington Parkway. The change of venue is attributed to fans’ positive response to games at James Griffin and the large number of fans expected to attend the important Western Conference game. August 14 is camp reunion night as well as the last game to redeem flex tickets or MYSA tickets.
