ATLANTA SILVERBACKS
SILVERBACKS AND INDEPENDIENTE SIGN PARTNERSHIP
Wednesday, April 28 2004
Storied Argentine club enters into strategic sporting and commercial alliance with Atlanta.
AVELLANEDA, Buenos Aires, Argentina (Wed.22.April.2004) - The Atlanta Silverbacks and Club Atlético Independiente of Argentina have announced the signing of a strategic alliance that will expand the international reach of both clubs. The agreement was signed last week at Independiente's headquarters in Avellaneda by Silverbacks President and CEO Stephen Pratten
and Independiente President Andres Ducatenzeiler. The partnership involves exchanges of professional and youth players, coaches, training methods, marketing, merchandising and many other sporting, commercial and cultural areas.
Independiente is one of the most storied clubs in Argentine and
international soccer. Founded in 1905, the Red Devils have captured more than a dozen national championships in one of soccer's toughest leagues and have won 15 international cups, the most of any club in the world, together with Real Madrid and AC Milan. Nicknamed "the King of Cups" by its more than 4
million fans around the world, Independiente has 3 InterAmerican Cups, 1 South American Recopa, 2 South American Super Cups, 7 Libertadores Cups and 2 Intercontinental Cups. Many renowned players have worn the club's famous red jersey, among them stars like Daniel Bertoni, who scored for Argentina
in the Final of the 1986 World Cup, and club idol Ricardo Bochini, considered by many as one of the best Argentine players in history.
"As we unveil our Centenary Plan," said club Executive Director Sergio Pardo, "an essential part of that strategy is to affiliate Independiente with clubs that have a world-vision like the Atlanta Silverbacks. We admire Atlanta's efforts to build a football club based on the European and Latin American model, but tailored to the needs of the U.S. player and fan. Our
clubs hope to visit each others' cities soon to broaden the relationship, not only within our sport, but between our countries and our cultures."
Pratten also remarked, "The Silverbacks are honored to have been approached by a distinguished club like Independiente. This strategic alliance is an important part of Atlanta's vision to become an internationally-recognized organization. Similar to our current relationship with Inter Milan, this partnership reinforces the Silverbacks' desire to create opportunities for our players, staff and club members, not only in Atlanta but around the world."
Independiente is currently battling for yet another Copa Libertadores title under head coach and former player, Juan Omar Pastoriza. As part of the club's celebration of its 100-year anniversary in 2005, the King of Cups is reshaping its organizational structure to face the challenges of a changing
environment in Argentine and international soccer.
"The Red Devils and the Red-and-Black gorillas hope to learn from each other with this historic pact," commented Independiente U.S. representative, Haroldo Da Riva. "Atlanta can learn about the passion of Argentine fútbol, but Independiente can certainly learn about American efficiency, marketing and business processes."
