I love Minnesota. I have a friend who lives there, hillbilly. The talk funny but the climate is similiar to Canada. Hockey & Football is big there, not so much with the NBA.

I wonder if he will be there marque player. I know nothin about the kid.

03/03/07 - Thunder Adds Two More Players to 2007 Roster

Goalkeeper Platter Returns, Forward Gotsmanov Comes Home

ST. PAUL, Minn. (Saturday, March 3, 2007) – The Minnesota Thunder announced today that it has signed two more players, including Woodbury native Alexander “Sasha” Gotsmanov through the 2008 season. Goalkeeper Nicolas Platter will also return for his third stint with the team and has signed through the 2009 season.

Gotsmanov comes to the Thunder after spending the last two seasons with the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer. Gotsmanov was a standout player at Woodbury High School where he was named to the All-State team three seasons and earned All-Midwest and All-American honors in 2000.

Gotsmanov played his collegiate soccer at the University of Rhode Island where he completed his career fifth on the school’s all-time scoring list with 89 points. In his senior season he led the entire nation with 19 goals and 46 points.

He was drafted by the Rapids in 2005 as a developmental player. Gotsmanov was the leading scorer for the Rapids Reserve Team as he scored six goals and had three assists in 12 games, good enough for a fifth place tie overall in the MLS Reserve Division. That same season he was voted the most valuable player on the reserve squad.

In 2006 Gotsmanov was loaned to the Thunder for six games where he logged 202 total minutes.

“We got a good chance to look as Sasha last year,” said Thunder head coach Amos Magee. “While he never got completely comfortable in the short time he was here, we saw several glimpses of imagination and inventiveness. We expect him to score some goals for us.”

Platter returns to the Thunder for his third season. The young promising goalkeeper will be fighting for a starting spot against long time Thunder keeper Joe Warren.

In 2006 Platter played in six games for the Thunder logging 454 minutes including an impressive win over league powerhouse, the Montreal Impact. He finished the season with a goals against average of 1.8.

Platter played his collegiate career at UC-Davis and finished his as the school leader in shutouts with 17 and the leader in saves with 195. He was named the team’s most valuable player in 2003.

“Nic has continued to develop in all the right ways,” said Magee. “He is a leader in our summer camps and will challenge Joe for playing time this year.”

The Thunder opens its 2007 home season on Sunday, May 6 at 5:05 p.m. against the defending USL First Division champions, the Vancouver Whitecaps. For ticket information, please visit Minnesota Thunder Professional Soccer Team or call 651.917.TEAM.

Minnesota Thunder Professional Soccer Team

Friday, March 9, 2007

ST PAUL, MN -- Minnesota Thunder head coach Amos Magee has been named Head Coach of the US Maccabi Games soccer team. Magee will coach the Open Team in the 11th Edition of the Pan-American games to be held December 26th, 2007 – January 2nd, 2008 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

“This is both a thrill and an honor,” said Magee. “To be selected to coach the marquee soccer team says a lot about what we’ve been able to accomplish with the Thunder and during my time with the US Maccabi Team.”

Magee started his Maccabi career in 1993, winning a bronze medal as a player in the 13th Maccabiah. He assisted the U16 Maccabi Junior Team in the 2003 Pan-Am games and assisted San Diego St. Head Coach Lev Kirschner at the 2005 Maccabiah. Kirschner and Magee led the US team to a Silver medal, the highest medal a US Maccabi Soccer team has ever received.

“There is nothing quite like representing your country in an international competition,” added Magee.

Magee will be assisted by former William and Mary coach Al Albert. Coach Albert spent 33 years at W&M, wracking up an impressive 401 wins, 12 NCAA bids, and two trips to the Elite Eight. He is the vice-president of NSCAA and will assume the presidency in January of 2008.

“I’m tremendously excited about working alongside one of the legends of US Soccer,” said Magee. “I expect this to be an educational trip as well as a competitive one. I’m very excited to have Al on staff.”

In addition to his impressive collegiate resume, Albert was one of the founders of what has now become the Virginia Legacy SC. He also has United Soccer League connections as he will be the assistant coach for the Legacy in the Premier Developmental League (PDL). Albert is currently the Associate Director of Athletic Development at W&M.

Thunder assistant coach Tod Herskovitz was named assistant coach of the Junior Team for the Pan-Am games. Herskovitz, Varsity Boys coach at St. Paul Academy, played with Magee in the 1993 Maccabiah and will be assisting St. Mary’s University Men’s Coach Adam Cooper.

“This will be a great learning experience,” said Herskovitz, “I’m excited to work with Coach Cooper towards a gold medal.”

'Maccabi USA/Sports for Israel will send a contingent of more than 600 athletes to the 11th Pan American Maccabi Games, in the Open, Youth, Juniors and Masters categories, joining an estimated 3,000 athletes from more than 20 countries,” said Phyllis Magerman, General Chair of the U.S. 11th Pan American Maccabi Games Organizing Committee.

The Games will take place in Buenos Aires, Argentina, December 26, 2007 – January 2, 2008.

Since 1948, Maccabi USA/Sports for Israel has sought to enrich the lives of Jewish youth in the United States, Israel and throughout the Diaspora through athletic, cultural and educational programs. The organization is the sponsor of the U.S. Team to the World Maccabiah Games in Israel. It also sponsors U.S. participation in Maccabi competitions in Pan America, Europe and Australia and supports Jewish youth through the JCC Maccabi Games.

The Thunders roster is looking pretty thin, ill by surprise if they don't end up at the bottom of the table just like last year.
