Ajax Orlando Hire Ex-Oranje Star 28/01/04
Former Ajax and Holland hero Wim Suurbier has been tabbed as the first technical director in Ajax Orlando’s history.
"Combining the gold standard Ajax training methods and the growing American interest in soccer, Ajax Orlando will be the leading soccer establishment in the United States and I'm proud to be a part of that," he told the club website.
"Wim's experience within Ajax and his knowledge of what this position entails made him the obvious choice as Ajax Orlando's Technical Director," said club chief Mark Dillon. "He knows Ajax and his presence in Orlando is just one more indication of our commitment to adopting the same high standards of excellence that have been set by AFC Ajax for the last one hundred years in Amsterdam."
A member of three European Cup winners at Ajax and two World Cup finalists with the Oranje, Suurbier also played and coached in the NASL.

(TORONTO, ON) - The Manchester United Supporters Club of Canada (MUSC Canada) is pleased to announce an official partnership with the Toronto Lynx Soccer Club of the North American A-League. Kevin Kerr, Chairman of the Club enthuses, “We are tremendously excited to be partnering with the Lynx and supporting the development of grass roots soccer in Canada. The Lynx are firmly committed to the development of young soccer players through their various youth programs and we are pleased to be a part of this exciting initiative.”
Although MUSC Canada has informally supported the Lynx over the last 7 years, David Coleman, Director of Public Relations for the Supporters Club believes that it's time that soccer fans support the Canadian game in a bigger way. He looks forward to kicking it up a notch with the Toronto Lynx. “This partnership allows us to reach out to the soccer community in the GTA and to grow our membership for supporting our beloved Reds."
MUSC Canada is the official Canadian Supporters Club of Manchester United Football Club and has been in operation since 1994 with members in Toronto and across Canada. The Club also recently launched chapters in Winnipeg and Vancouver.”
The Supporters Club are a steadfast group meeting weekly at their official pub, Elsewhere Bar and Grill, in central Toronto at Yonge and Eglinton to watch their favourite team and interact with their fellow Reds. It's not unusual to have 200-300 MUSC Canada members and supporters from other teams at these gatherings. Coleman continues, “Our Club arranges trips to see United at Old Trafford in Manchester, as well as organizing annual events such as golf tournaments, Christmas parties and other socials. We have already begun organizing a trip to the USA for members this coming July to see Manchester United in their pre-season tour.”
The partnership with the Lynx will include features such as an official MUSCC Night at the Lynx home opener on May 16, joint advertising initiatives and activities with the Toronto Lynx Supporters Club. To become a member of the Manchester United Supporters Club of Canada, please call 416-489-7647 or email: chairmanmuscc@rogers.com. For more information visit the Club’s website at www.muscc.com.

The Virginia Beach Mariners announce the return of eleven players from the 2003 season including nine starters. Among the returnees is forward Dante Washington who finished last season ranked third in the A-League in points with 37 and ranked second in goals with 18 in 26 games. Joining Washington is midfielder Pato Aguilera who ranked sixth in the League in points with 29 and ninth in goals with 10. He also ranked third in assists with 9. Both Washington and Aguilera were named First Team All A-League.
Also among last season’s starters who will be joining the 2004 team is Roy Lassiter, Major League Soccer’s all-time leading scorer. Lassiter finished 2003 ranked 19th in the League in points with 20.
Joining Washington and Lassiter up top will be forward Jakob Fenger who scored 11 points in 2003, with 5 goals and 1 assist. He was tied for the league-lead in games played with 28. Midfielder Hamisi Amani-Dove will also return after playing in 27 matches last year and scoring 9 points (2 goals and 5 assists), as well as midfielder Jeff Bilyk who missed the last seven games of the 2003 season with a broken leg suffered against Charleston on August 12. Midfielder Daniel Alvarez who scored one goal and 2 assists will also return, as well as midfielder/forward, Gary Williams.
The Mariners’ defense, tauted as one of the League’s best, remains mostly intact with the return of Russell Hutchison, Steve Danbusky and sweeper Richard Mahoney.. Danbusky tied with teammate Jakob Fenger in games played with 28. Hutchison, who was named to the A-League Team of the Week twice in a three-period last season, ranked third in the League among defenders in points with ten scoring four goals and two assists. One of those goals qualified the Mariners for the U.S. Open Cup.
“It is nice to have continuity,” said Mariners’ head coach Shawn McDonald. “This should help us be very competitive from the start.”
The Mariners open their 2004 season on April 30 in Richmond and open their home season the following night, May 1, against Richmond at the Sportsplex at 7:30 p.m. Both matches will double as Open Cup qualifiers.

Thunder Ink Two Players 18/02/04
The Minnesota Thunder announced today two new players who have signed for the 2004 season. The Indiana Blast’s 2003 MVP Godfrey Tenoff joins the Thunder as a midfielder and defender Kevin Friedland joins the Thunder from the Kansas City Wizards.
Having played the second most minutes in the A-league for the 2003 season, Tenoff, 25, joins the Thunder at 5’9”, weighing 165lbs. Hailing from Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, Tenoff attended the University of Dayton where he was nominated to the All-Atlantic 10 Conference Team for two seasons. He last played midfielder for the Indiana Blast where in 2002 he played the most minutes on the team with 2331, and his minutes played in 2003 rose over 2600. Last year Tenoff finished with 13 points on four goals and five assists. In 2003 he was nominated to the A-League Team of the Week twice (weeks 9, 10).
“Godfrey has been a very successful player in the A-league”, said Thunder head coach Buzz Lagos. “Last year Godfrey was Indiana's most threatening player and we feel he will step into our team and be a very effective player for us in the midfield.”
Friedland was actually discovered by Thunder assistant coach and player Amos Magee during the Maccabiah games in December. Friedland, 22, last played defense for the KC Wizards and joins the team at 5’8”, 154 lbs. His hometown is Irvine, CA. and he attended Southern Methodist University where he played in every game beginning in 2001, and in 2002 was one of only three players to start every game. In 1999 he was L.A. Times Player of the Year, and in 2002 received four awards: NSCAA Second Team All-American, All conference MVC First Team, Midwest First Team, and CSN All-American Honorable Mention.
“We believe Kevin will be a great help on the left side of the defense and midfield,” said Lagos. “We lost a great player in Don Gramenz this year, but we feel Kevin Friedland will be able to step right in and contribute.”
