Team Announcement
DATE: Tuesday, August 17, 2004
DANTE WASHINGTON NAMED A-LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
TAMPA, FL – United Soccer Leagues announced Tuesday the Week 18 Team of the Week for the A-League, honoring Virginia Beach’s Dante Washington as the A-League Player of the Week. Mariners’ goalkeeper Matt Nelson was also named to the A-League Team of the Week for his eight saves in the Mariners’ 3-1 win over Atlanta on August 11.
This is the second week in a row that a Virginia Beach Mariner has been named the A-League Player of the Week. Forward Carlos Garcia was honored for Week 17 for his two goals and two assists over Toronto and Atlanta on August 2 and August 6.
The Virginia Beach Mariners picked up a key victory in the race for the playoffs by adding to Atlanta’s slump with a 3-1 win over the sliding Silverbacks. Forward Dante Washington played a part in all three tallies for the Mariners.
Washington opened the scoring in the 18th minute on an assist from Jakob Fenger and set up Hamisi Amani-Dove two minutes later to give Virginia Beach a 2-0 lead. The Silverbacks pulled within one on a goal from Leslie Fitzpatrick before Washington put the game away with a second tally in the 84th.
Washington is the league leader in points (36) with Portland’s Alan Gordon (35) and Byron Alvarez (32) right on his heels. He trails Gordon by two in the goals table with 15.

Thunder Tied For Final Playoff Spot After 2-1 Loss
Thunder Drops Important Game in Vancouver
August 19, 2004 (Vancouver, BC) – The Minnesota Thunder lost an important game to the Vancouver Whitecaps on Thursday evening in Vancouver 2-1. All three goals were scored in the first half of play, with Johnny Menyongar scoring the lone goal for the Thunder on a penalty kick. Vancouver’s Jason Jordan scored one goal and assisted on another in leading the Whitecaps to victory.
Earlier Thursday evening the Milwaukee Wave United defeated Edmonton FC 6-2 to move into a tie with the Thunder for fourth place in the Western Conference standings (37 points each). The Seattle Sounders sit in third place with 40 points, while the Vancouver Whitecaps hold onto second place with 44 points. The top four teams in the conference move on to post-season play.
The Thunder now travels to Calgary to take on the last place Mustangs on Sunday afternoon. The Thunder has four remaining regular season games.
Vancouver opened scoring early when they earned a corner kick in the 11th minute and Martin Nash sent in a low, curling ball that slid past one Vancouver player and directly to Jason Jordan who had an easy tap in from just three yards. Thunder goalkeeper Joe Warren had no opportunity to make a save on the play.
The Thunder equalized 11 minutes later when a Thunder player was pushed from behind in the Vancouver goal box and earned a penalty kick. Johnny Menyongar stepped up and knocked home his fifth goal of the year to put the score at 1-1.
Vancouver reclaimed the lead in the 35th minute of play when Jordan gained possession of the ball 15 yards from goal and took a shot that ricocheted off of a Thunder player towards the left goal post. Vancouver forward Carlo Corazzin ran onto the ball and slid a shot from four yards into the back of the net, past a diving Joe Warren.
Vancouver held a slight advantage in the overall play in the first half, out-shooting the Thunder11-8 in the first 45 minutes.
The second half provided no additional scoring as Vancouver had the better opportunities to score, despite the Thunder holding the second half shot advantage 7-5.
The Thunder’s record now stands at 11-8-4, while Vancouver improves to 12-9-5.

SILVERBACKS IN MUST WIN GAME AGAINST TORONTO SATURDAY
Thursday, August 26 2004
The Atlanta Silverbacks must win their final game of the season against the Toronto Lynx on Saturday, August 28 if they want to reach the A-League playoffs. Kickoff time for the game is set for 6 p.m. at DeKalb Memorial Stadium.
With their 3-0 loss to Rochester on Wednesday, the Silverbacks playoff destiny is now out of the team’s hands. If Atlanta loses or ties on Saturday, they will not make the playoffs. Even if the Silverbacks win, one of the following events must also happen in order for them to make a postseason appearance. Either No. 3 Syracuse must lose against Virginia Beach or No. 4 Rochester must draw or lose to the Montreal Impact.
Toronto is currently seventh in the Eastern Conference with an overall record of 9-15-1. In their only other meeting this season, the Silverbacks defeated the Lynx 1-0 on June 13 in Toronto. Forward Ali Ngon-Gerba leads the team with 34 points (15 goals and four assists). Darren Baxter has also contributed 10 points for the Lynx, with four goals and two assists. Bryheem Hancock has been the main goalkeeper, playing 20 games and posting a goals-against-average of 1.854 and 111 saves.

MARINERS CLOSE OUT SEASON AGAINST SYRACUSE SATURDAY NIGHT
Virginia Beach, Virginia – The Virginia Beach Mariners close out their 2004 campaign Saturday night, hosting the Syracuse Salty Dogs at the Sportsplex. The Mariners will finish the season in sixth place in the Eastern Conference. Only the top four teams make the playoffs.
The teams have split their two previous meetings this season; the Mariners won 2-1 at home on July 5 and Syracuse outlasted the Mariners in New York 1-0 on June 13.
The Mariners can act as spoiler Saturday. If Montreal beats Rochester tonight and Atlanta beats Toronto on Saturday, Rochester will slide into third place and Atlanta will be tied with Syracuse for fourth place and win the head-to-head tiebreaker. If the Mariners beat the Salty Dogs, Atlanta would take the fourth and final playoff berth and Syracuse goes home.
Virginia Beach Mariners (11-13-3, 36 points)
The Mariners have also split their last six matches going 3-3-0. They had won six of seven before losing their last three. The team has been led all season by A-League points leader Dante Washington who has tallied 38 points in 26 games. He also is a single goal behind League-leader Alan Gordon from Portland in goals scored with 16 and he ranks 7th in the League in assists with six. Forward Carlos Garcia is 14th in the League in points with 19 in 24 matches and ranks second league-wide in assists with 9, just one behind Portland’s Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar. He also ranks 9th in shots with 54. Goalkeeper Matt Nelson continues to rank in the top ten in wins; he now has 11 in 24 matches and is ranked 8th. Nelson ranks 5th in both minutes played (2249) and in saves (102).
The Mariners have scored 42 goals this season, second most in the A-League along with the Richmond Kickers who have also scored 42. The team has allowed 39 goals this season. In their last six games, the have scored 11 and allowed 10. The Mariners are 9-4-0 at home in 2004.
Syracuse Salty Dogs (14-8-5, 47 points)
Syracuse stands third in the Eastern Conference coming into Saturday night’s match. Atlanta brought an abrupt end to the Salty Dog’s 12-game unbeaten streak last Saturday, winning 2-1. Syracuse had gone 12-2-0 between July 7 and August 20.
The team is lead by Mauro Carabajal with 17 points in 9 games and a 19th ranking in the League in points. Carabajal is followed by both Machel Millwood and Rene Rivas with 13 points each, Goalkeeper Byron Foss is ranked 7th in wins with 11 in 20 games and 10th in shutous with 5. He also ranks 5th in goals-against-average (GAA) with 1.005.
Syracuse is 7-4-2 on the road in 2004 and have scored 10 goals in their last six matches, allowing 8. On the season, they have scored 38 and allowed 28.
