Goalkeeper Mike Franks made his first start since June 11, ending a run of 13 consecutive starts for Alex Marques.

Central Florida Wins 2004 PDL Title
Saturday, August 7, 2004

_

ORLANDO, FL -- The Central Florida Kraze captured the 2004 PDL Championship Saturday night in Orlando as they downed the Boulder Rapids Reserve 1-0 on a goal from Justin Cook in the 88th minute.

Central Florida star foward Orville 'Villa' Mullings tested the Boulder defense numerous times on the night, but it wasn't until two minutes from time that his efforts resulted in the game-winner.

Mullings got the ball from second half sub Xavier Delgado in the middle at the top of the box and as he cut to the right side, he let off a shot that deflected off the defender marking him. The floating ball glanced off the fingertips of the outstretched hands of diving Rapids Reserve goalkeeper Luis Robles and to the feet of Cook, who put the loose ball away for the game-winner.

Boulder controlled the possesion for much of the first 15 minutes, but the Kraze began to pressure and create chances of their own and the rest of the game was a wild back-and-forth affair that saw both teams with great opportunies.

In the 20th minute, Cook had a chance to put the Kraze on top. A free kick sent into the box from the flank was headed by a Boulder defender, but the ball only came halfway out and right to Cook, whose shot missed wide left of the goal.

In another excellent chance, Central Florida's All-League midfielder Eric Vasquez charged through the center of the midfield uncontested in the 38th minute and slipped the ball to Mullings about 15 yards from the box. Mullings, on the left side, nearly dribbled through two Boulder defenders before being fouled on the line at the top of the box. The call could have arguably been ruled inside the box for a penalty kick, but a free kick was given just outside the box that the Kraze were unable to take advantage of.

In stoppage time of the first half, Boulder's John Pulido took a shot from the top right corner of the box that deflected off a Kraze defender en route to the goal, forcing McIntosh to make a diving save to keep the game scoreless headed to the break.

Nearly 10 minutes into the second half Mullings got a breakaway after the ball slipped through defender Aaron Pitchkolan's legs, but his shot from 10 yards was stonewalled by Robles in the best save of the night in a one-on-one challenge.

Four minutes later in the 58th, Mullings again proved dangerous. He shouldered Miguel Guante off the ball in the left corner, allowing him to take the ball and drive into the box before another Boulder back was able to fly in and clear the ball away as Robles charged out to face Mullings.

A long ball in the 84th found Mullings racing shoulder-to-shoulder with a Boulder defender, but Robles came out to beat him to the ball just outside the box to squelch the last dangerous opportunity from the Kraze leading up to the winning strike.

Both goalkeepers had good nights with Robles showing great control his box, coming off his line numerous times throughout the game to prevent scoring opportunities for the Kraze until the second-chance ball found Cook in the 88th.

Central Florida goalkeeper Ryan McIntosh had to make a great diving save a minute after their winning score on a hard shot headed just inside the post to preserve the lead.

Justin Cook was named the PDL Championship Most Valuable Player.

Thunder Defeat Second Place Whitecaps 2-1

Castellanos Scores Game Winner in 77th Minute

August 10, 2004 (Stillwater, Minn.) –

The Thunder snapped a four game losing streak Tuesday night in
Stillwater, defeating the visiting Vancouver Whitecaps by a 2-1
score. Midfielder Kevin Friedland led the Thunder with a goal and an
assist, while David Castellanos scored the game-winner for the
Thunder in the 77th minute. The win is an important one for the
Thunder who reclaim third place in the Western Conference, moving
past the Seattle Sounders.

“It was a good win for us after a tough stretch where we lost four
league matches in a row,” said Thunder head coach Buzz Lagos after
the game, “To come back home and get the win against the second place
team puts us closer to Vancouver in the standings and separates us
more from [fifth-place] Milwaukee. It was a good result for our team
and now we look forward to playing Portland.

The Thunder now prepare to face the first-place Portland Timbers at
James Griffin Stadium in St. Paul on Saturday (August 14) at 7 p.m.

The Whitecaps started Tuesday evening’s game quickly when forward
Jason Jordan carried the ball deep into left side of the Thunder goal
box in the 5th minute of play and lofted a ball towards the top of
the box. Midfielder Johnny Sulentic cracked a first time shot from
just outside goal box that went a few feet wide of the goal.

The Thunder got on the board first when forward Johnny Menyongar
collected the ball 25 yards from goal and played a ball into the
right corner of the field for the streaking Godfrey Tenoff who played
a first time ball across the mouth of the goal that snuck past the
Vancouver defense and goalkeeper Alex Marques to Kevin Friedland who
easily slid the ball into the far side of the goal for the 1-0 lead.

It looked as though the Thunder would take that 1-0 lead into
halftime when Vancouver forward Jason Jordan collected a poor
Minnesota clearance with just a minute left in the half and carried
the ball deep into the Thunder goal box. Jordan drew goalkeeper Joe
Warren to the left side of the net and slid the ball across the goal
to a wide-open Martin Nash who easily put the ball into the back of
the net to tie the game at one.

Vancouver out-shot the Thunder 8-3 in the first half.

Jordan again created an early chance for Vancouver in the 48th minute
when he stole the ball from Tenoff and took off down the left side of
the field with several Thunder players racing to catch up to him.
Jordan slid through the Thunder goal box and hit a low shot towards
the far post that Warren was barely able to grab as he dove to his
left.

The Thunder’s Jeff Matteo created a great opportunity to score when
he collected a Vancouver turnover and slid a ball across the goal box
to a wide open Johnny Menyongar who cut back one defender and slid
the ball to a streaking Tenoff who rocketed a shot past goalkeeper
Marques and just over the cross bar.

With just over ten minutes left in the game Friedland threaded a ball
through the Vancouver defense to a sprinting David Castellanos who
carried the ball about 10 yards into the goal box and hit a shot past
a diving Marques to put the Thunder up 2-1. Castellanos’ goal would
prove to be the game-winner.

“It was a good result for our team and now we look forward to playing
Portland,” said Lagos.

With the win the Thunder improves to 11-8-3 (W-L-D). The Thunder’s
final home game of the season takes place this Saturday (August 14)
at James Griffin Stadium. The Thunder face off against the first-
place Portland Timbers. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Tickets may be
purchased by visiting www.mnthunder.com or by calling the Thunder
office at 917-917-8326.

1,200 SEATS ADDED FOR THE GAME IN SHERBROOKE

SHERBROOKE, August 11, 2004 — Christian Gagnon, Director of Sherbrooke University’s Service du sport et de l’activité physique, announced on Wednesday that 1,200 seats had been added for the game the Montreal Impact will play on August 22 at Sherbrooke University Stadium.

It will bring the total capacity to 9,000 seats for the A-League regular-season match-up.

Mr. Gagnon confirmed that, following promotional efforts by Soccer Estrie for the upcoming game, over 8,000 tickets had already been sold.

"To answer the great demand, stands have been added in order to offer more seating to soccer fans from the area," said Mr. Gagnon at a press conference. "But tickets are going fast!"

"This year, the Montreal Impact has had exceptional support from its fans," said Impact head coach Nick DeSantis, who was on hand along with midfielder Patrick Leduc. "I’m happy to see that we have the same kind of support in Sherbrooke."

Organizers also announced that Sonia Denoncourt, now a FIFA referee instructor, would be the event’s honourary president. This Sherbrooke native, a FIFA member since 1994, was a referee for 24 years, the last 10 at the international level. On Sunday, August 22, at the Sherbrooke University cafeteria, she will take part in a luncheon where she will share her experience with some of the region’s referees.

Jean-Pierre Boucher, member of the organizing committee and head of the SSAP program, announced that several events will be held in conjunction with the Impact game.

"Following excellent cooperation between the SSAP and Soccer Estrie, we were able to put together several activities that will enable us to celebrate the vitality of soccer in our region," he said.

The Impact will hold a public practice, while head coach Nick DeSantis will hold a soccer clinic for local coaches. Vert & Or teams will play friendly games and the Nike Technical Games regional finals will also be held.

League activities will cease in Sherbrooke on that day, in order to allow thousands of young boys and girls who play soccer to go see the Impact play.

Tickets for the game are on sale at the Sherbrooke University Cultural Centre or can be purchased by phone at 819-820-1000.

Mariners feed playoff hopes with win
By TRIS WYKES, The Virginian-Pilot
© August 12, 2004

VIRGINIA BEACH — If it’s August, then the Virginia Beach Mariners must be making a desperate push for the playoffs. You can almost flip your calendar by the franchise’s late charges, and it’s staging its third in its last three seasons.

Wednesday, the Mariners bettered their tenuous position with a 3-1 defeat of the Atlanta Silverbacks . The victory moved sixth-place Virginia Beach within two points of Atlanta and Syracuse, which are tied for fourth. Four Eastern Conference teams earn playoff berths.

“We know our backs are up against the wall and if we want to have any chance of making the playoffs, we have to come up with a win every single time for the rest of the season,’’ said forward Dante Washington, who helped his team’s cause with two goals.

The Mariners opened the scoring on a bizarre sequence that began with Atlanta goalkeeper Joe Barton illegally handling a back pass off the foot of a teammate in the 16th minute.

That violation calls for the opposition to receive an indirect kick at the spot of the foul, but as Virginia Beach forward Carlos Garcia raced to Barton and reached for the ball near the penalty stripe, the netminder booted the ball toward one of the corner flags.

Inexplicably, referee Andrew Chapin didn’t issue Barton a yellow card, and Garcia quickly retrieved a ball from beyond the end line and touched it over to teammate Jakob Fenger. Barton sprawled to make the stop, Chapin’s whistle sounded and players from both teams converged around the official in a shouting, gesticulating mob.

When order was restored, the Mariners lined up for another indirect kick from 6 yards, facing all 11 Silverbacks strung across the goal line. Fenger touched the ball and Washington blasted it into the net.

Hamisi Amani-Dove made it 2-0 four minutes later, and Washington closed the scoring in the 84th minute with his 14th goal of the season.
