Default Chesterfield v Charlton [Carling Cup]

Quote:
Chesterfield bid for their third Premiership scalp in the Carling Cup when Charlton travel to Saltergate on Tuesday.

Roy McFarland's men came from a goal down to beat Manchester City and West Ham at home in previous rounds.

The Carling Cup has come as welcome respite from their league campaigns with both sides currently struggling at the wrong end of their respective divisions.

Charlton picked up only their second win of the Premiership season at the weekend but have enjoyed more success in the cup competition.

The Addicks knocked out Carlisle and Bolton 1-0 to set up a fourth round clash with The Spireites.

Chesterfield striker Caleb Folan was the hero in last month's win over West Ham but McFarland may have to do without him against Charlton.

The club's top scorer is nursing a hamstring strain picked up in Saturday's game against Gillingham and a decision on his fitness will be made at the last possible minute.

Mark Hughes was also injured at the weekend and he joins Mark Allott as a doubt for the Charlton game.

Paul Shaw is in line to return after nine games on the sidelines with knee ligament damage but Phil Pickin is definitely ruled out.

Charlton are set to include Darren Bent and Scott Carson for the first time in the competition against The Spireites.

But Matt Holland, Dennis Rommedahl and Talal El Karkouri are all expected to miss the game while midfielder Andy Reid is a doubt.

There is ticking a little Chesterfield bomb here... Will it explod?

Charlton ended the run of Carling Cup giant-killers Chesterfield with a penalty shoot-out victory following a 3-3 draw.

The League One side scored at the start of each half but were twice pegged back by The Addicks, before Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink netted after 93 minutes and Wayne Allison struck an equaliser in the dying seconds of extra time.

In the shoot-out, misses by Hasselbaink and Derek Niven left it at 3-3 going into the final round of penalties, and Mark Allott's effort was saved by Scott Carson.

Hermann Hreidarsson then stepped up to score and clinch Charlton's place in the quarter finals.

Charlton can be satisfied with another encouraging performance, but they are also sure to be relieved after overcoming spirited opponents who can look back on their cup adventure with pride.

Chesterfield conceded the first goal in their previous victories over Manchester City and West Ham, but were quickest out of the blocks to catch Charlton napping in the third minute.

Colin Larkin was alert to Kevan Hurst's low corner and raced to the near post to somehow flick a shot past two defenders and into the roof of the net.

The early setback snapped Charlton into life and Andy Reid soon tested Barry Roche with a low left-foot shot, but Chesterfield held firm and sensibly continued to push forward.

Their work-rate was tremendous and there were one or two moments of real flair, while the colossal figure of Caleb Folan up front seemed to intimidate Carson as he beat the offside trap, bore down on goal and flicked the ball high over the hesitant Addicks keeper.

Hurst was at the hub of all The Spireites' best work and twice tried his luck from distance, although on both occasions his efforts flew just past the woodwork.

In the closing stages of the first half Charlton began to impose their class on the contest, and Jerome Thomas' inviting cross from the right only just evaded Bryan Hughes' outstretched boot at the far post.

After 40 minutes they drew level as Hasselbaink dropped deep to pick up possession from Luke Young and then probe forward. The Chesterfield defence failed to close him down quickly enough and Hasselbaink took his time to carefully place a shot from 25 yards into the bottom right corner.

With the score 1-1 at half time and the momentum with Charlton, Iain Dowie's side were strong favourites to progress, but they fell behind again in the 47th minute when Alan O'Hare whipped in a corner with his left foot and Folan held off Jonathan Fortune to head past Carson from six yards out.

Fortune's frustration boiled over moments later and he was booked for tugging Folan to the ground, while the Chesterfield forward also picked up a yellow card for reacting angrily to the incident.

Dowie did not wait long to introduce Darren Bent, with the England international replacing his namesake Marcus after 65 minutes.

Bent immediately showed his knack for being in the right place at the right time, as he grabbed Charlton's second equaliser of the night in the 73rd minute. A corner from Reid was only cleared as far as Thomas at the left-hand edge of the area, and the winger's shot into a crowded six-yard box was diverted into the goal by Bent at the back post.

Once again though it was Chesterfield who responded better to a Charlton goal, and they were the aggressors as the clock ticked down to 90 minutes.

There were no more clear-cut opportunities in that time as both sides fought tooth and nail, although it took three defenders to crowd out Thomas when he burst through into the Chesterfield area.

As the match entered extra time Chesterfield finally ran out of steam, and slipped behind for the first time on 93 minutes when Hasselbaink coolly latched onto Thomas' cut-back from the left and slotted Charlton 3-2 ahead.

The veteran striker then spurned two chances to grab his hat-trick and secure victory for Charlton, first curling a shot over from the right-hand edge of the area, and then firing straight at Roche after good work from Bent.

In the second period of extra time Chesterfield did mount one final brave effort and Hurst crashed a good strike wide, but it looked like Charlton would contain them until Wayne Allison's last-second leveller.

A long free kick was nodded into the area by Mark Allott and Allison crashed his header past Carson via a deflection off Souleymane Diawara.

The drama of penalties followed, but it was heartache for Chesterfield and joy for Charlton.

Dowie hails plucky Spireites

Quote:
Iain Dowie was delighted to see Charlton progress to the quarter finals of the Carling Cup following a penalty shoot-out victory over Chesterfield, while Spireites boss Roy McFarland paid tribute to the efforts of his side.

A dramatic game finished 3-3 after extra time, and it was Addicks keeper Scott Carson who ultimately emerged as the hero with two spot-kick saves.

But Dowie was full of praise for the League One outfit, who had already dumped Manchester City and West Ham out of the competition in previous rounds.

"A huge amount of credit for Roy McFarland and the boys at Southend," Dowie told Sky Sports.

"Every man was right on their game. They pressed us, they harried us, and we had to make sure we passed the ball well, which we did for the goals.

"But I was very pleased with our spirit, our effort, and most of all I think we matched their work-rate.

"They made us work for every inch of the ground today but we ended up winnning the arm wrestle.

"We've had a good period, two draws, three wins, and we can enjoy it, but it's important not to get carried away."

McFarland took pride in Chesterfield's Carling Cup run after seeing it finally come to an end at Saltergate.

"I said to the boys that I thought they participated in a fantastic football match," he said.

"Sadly we've gone out on penalties but we've given everything and I think we've matched them.

"Three Premiership teams have not been able to beat us over normal time and even extra time, so we're proud of that record."
