Tottenham are on the verge of signing former Portugal captain Luis Figo after Real Madrid agreed to allow the midfielder to leave on a free transfer.

A report in the Guardian revealed that Spurs' director of football Frank Arnesen is in the Spanish capital discussing terms with the 31-year-old.

Figo is set to sign a two-year deal with Madrid paying a third of his wages which are estimated at £6m per season.

Real Madrid have flatly denied reports that Luis Figo was on the verge of a surprise transfer to Tottenham.

Reports claimed the winger could join Spurs on a free transfer but a Real statement said: "No one from Tottenham has been in direct or indirect contact.

"Figo has two years on his contract and at no moment has the club considered parting with the services of one of the most important players in our squad."
