Spurs Enquire for Arshavin
Sky Sports
Quote:
Zenit St Petersburg have claimed Tottenham have made an enquiry for in-demand star Andrei Arshavin.
Arshavin is being chased by a host of top clubs following his stellar performances for Russia at Euro 2008.
The classy playmaker has his heart set on a move away from Zenit with the likes of Barcelona, Chelsea and Arsenal all credited with an interest in Arshavin.
Tottenham are now reported to have joined the hunt for Arshavin, who claims he is being priced out of a move by Zenit's asking price.
Zenit official Konstantin Sarsaniya claims Tottenham have made a move for Arshavin.
Interest
"With Tottenham we have contacts," Sarsaniya told the Russian press.
"This English club is really interested in acquiring Andrei but, as I understand, €27million (£21.5million) is too high a price for them.
"For Spurs it is unacceptable. Tottenham are ready to pay in the region of €20million (£15.9million) for Arshavin."
Sarsaniya, however, denied speculation linking Manchester City with a move for 27-year-old Arshavin.
"I have not heard of their interest," added Sarsaniya.

Looks like Spurs are in the chase for Arshavin and the valuations from the two clubs aren't two far.
I don't know why Spurs are in for him though, how will Modric, Dos Santos, Lennon and Arshavin be catered for in one squad?

Arshavin is more of a striker than a midfielder, so I reckon he is the replacement for either Berbatov or Keane.

Think he would be a great asset to the Premiership. Although I think he will end up in La Liga.
Would be a great player for one of the big Spanish or English teams.

He would be a great replacement for Keane if he leaves. An exciting striker that I think would fit well with Ramos' style of play. I would like to see this happen.

Arshavin would consider Spurs
Quote:
Andrei Arshavin's agent has told Sky Sports News that the Zenit St Petersburg playmaker would be interested in a move to Tottenham Hotspur.
Arshavin has been strongly linked with a transfer away from Petrovsky Stadium after he impressed for Russia at Euro 2008.
Barcelona have so far failed in their attempts to sign the 27-year-old after their offer of £12million fell short of Zenit's reported asking fee of £24million.
The Russian champions recently claimed that Spurs have made an enquiry for Arshavin; however the North London club have yet to confirm or deny the reports.
The in-demand star has previously expressed his desire to sign for Barca, but, with the Spanish giants seemingly unwilling to up their previous bid, the player's agent has suggested he would be keen to sign for Tottenham.
Arshavin's representative, Dennis Lachter, has also revealed that the forward will demand high wages, with press reports on Friday claiming he is seeking £100,000-a-week.
Lachter told the Daily Mirror: "The price is very high, as are the personal terms.
"Let us see what happens in the future. It may need English clubs to sell some players first."

Sky Sports | Football | Premier League | News | Arshavin would consider Spurs
As good a player as Arshavin is I just can't believe Spurs are ignoring their defensive frailties yet again this summer... They've strengthened a lot in midfield, but only attacking-wise. Is Zokora still the DM of choice??
Sure the keeper is improved, but Cerny is gone and Robinson is following, so who's going to be the second choice?
And as soon as the season starts, Spurs only have 2 CBs by my reckoning. Woodgate & Dawson, since King is always injured, Gardner has been loaned out and Kaboul is about to be sold.
Then other defensive back-ups like Tainio & Chimbonda are gone/on the way out & yet no replacements have been linked...
Either Spurs have a good few promising defenders in the youth academy or it's going to be typical gung-ho Spurs which probably won't end well.

I still expect alot of movement from Spurs. With the sales of the Sunderland 4 and Robisnon they must be close to breaking even with this summers sales.
Now with the assumption that Spurs, still have £20million+ to spend and Ramos will get the majority of Berbatov's fee. Arshavin to Spurs is a real possibility.
King is all but finnished it seems, but they still have Rocha for numbers and Huddlestone can fill in there. So maybe another Cb is needed.
At right back they have Hutton and Gunter so that isn't a problem.
Left back they have Bale and Gilberto , so in all its a good young defensive unit. maybe needing just backups.
centre mid is where Spurs need to strengthen the most. As has been said before Zokora isnt good enough and I think Jenas is hugely overrated.

I agree, we still need to strengthen the CB and DM areas, I think Rocha is leaving as well, so it leaves us very short on numbers at CB. As a couple of you rightly said Zokora is not good enough for the DM role. Jenas can be a good player but he is no defensive midfielder, so the only possible option we have is Huddlestone.
Arshavin would be a quality replacement for Keane, although he is a different type of player. If Keane does leave (as looks likely this week), he would be a very good signing. I think Ramos will be playing 4-2-3-1 next season, so we could see Berbatov (if he stays) or Bent (oh no ) or a new striker playing on his own up front.

Arshavin would be a great replacement for Keane, costing around the same. But Kyan is right about their defensive worries, they have a lot of injury prone defenders- Bale, King, Woodgate, and not many DM's at all.
Bale, Hutton & Gunter are three excellent young full backs with lots of potential, with Stalteri & Lee probably being sold they will still need some back up- they have Gilberto but he didnt impress last season.
Woodgate, King & Dawson are decent CB's but two of them are always injured, and Dawson makes a lot of mistakes. Gardner, Kaboul & Rocha have left (or are leaving) so I still think a CB is needed, unless they plan to use Huddlestone there.
Midfield is very unbalanced. Zokora for me is poor, not good enough to hold a midfield on his own certainly. Huddlestone is a good player but again, is he mobile enough to play the lone DM role. Jenas came good as last season progressed, but with Modric, Giovani & maybe Bentley or Arshavin coming in how much will he play.
Spurs need a DM, that is patently obvious. Ramos at Sevilla had Poulsen, and he had bought in Keita last season before he left. Spurs dont have anyone of their calibre at the moment.

Andrei Arshavin's agent has confirmed Tottenham are in talks to sign the Russian star, but says a deal is still a way off.
Tottenham are lining up a move for Arshavin as they look to bolster their squad following the sale of Robbie Keane to Liverpool.
Arshavin, who impressed at Euro 2008 with Russia, is keen on a move away from Zenit St Petersburg as he seeks a new challenge.
A number of top clubs including Barcelona and Arsenal have been linked with the skilful playmaker, but Tottenham are hoping to lure him to White Hart Lane.
Arshavin's agent representative Dennis Lachter has confirmed Tottenham have held talks with Zenit about signing the 27-year-old and that the player would be interested in a move to North London.
"At this point there is some talks with Tottenham, but nothing complete because of the high fee Zenit want for Andrei," Lachter told skysports.com.
"The gap is huge between the two clubs as Zenit are looking a lot of money for Andrei.
Top target
"Juande Ramos very much wants to sign Andrei as he is his number one target and Daniel Levy is doing everthing to make the deal, but it is difficult to agree a fee with Zenit.
"Ramos has been following Andrei from his time in charge of Sevilla and also from last season's Uefa Cup run when Andrei was the outstanding player in the tournament.
"Andrei has made it known he wants to leave Zenit and the player has made his decision he would like to go to Tottenham.
"He likes the way Tottenham play football and he is a big admirer of Ramos."

Now with Keane out and Berbatov seemingly on his way out I can see Spurs going for both Arshavin and Bentley...apparently 36mill for the both of them.

Even if they get Arshavin and Bentley, they still need someone to replace Berbatov. I don't think Darren Bent is the answer and having just 2 strikers in the roster isn't enough.

He is a fantastic player. There have been rumours of him coming to Everton since January and had been very exciting at the prospect. His performances at the Euros blew our chances of getting him out the water. Will be good to see how he performs in England.
Sky Sports News are reporting that he has agreed personal terms with Spurs.

I agree with Oli tho Bent isn't gd enough to lead the line...so even with better attacking options they will need proper strikers to replace Keane and most likely Berbatov as well.

Spurs rule out move for Arshavin
Quote:
Tottenham have ended their interest in signing Russia playmaker Andrei Arshavin, BBC Sport understands.
Zenit St Petersburg had wanted as much as £24m for Arshavin, 27, but even after lowering their asking price, Spurs are now pursuing other targets.
One of those is not, though, Michael Owen, contrary to media reports.
Russia striker Roman Pavlyuchenko was another reported transfer target, but boss Juande Ra | | | | |
