Default Spurs sign Espanyol's Luis Garcia

Tottenham are closing in on the signing of Espanyol forward Luis Garcia, BBC Sport understands.

The 27-year-old, who can play across the front line and has 24 goals in 79 games for Espanyol, could cost £8m.

The move raises questions about the futures of Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane, although Spurs have yet to receive a bid for either player.

The Londoners are also hoping to break Blackburn's resolve over David Bentley and secure a deal for the winger soon.

New Rovers boss Paul Ince welcomed Bentley and the rest of his squad back to training on Monday claiming he would not be forced into selling the 23-year-old right midfielder.

However, Bentley is keen to leave Rovers and Tottenham appear to be at the front of the queue, with Juande Ramos keen to revamp his squad ahead of the new season.

The Spaniard has already brought Luka Modric, Giovani dos Santos and Heurelho Gomes - subject to a work permit - this summer, and the signings of Bentley and Garcia could take his spending to over £50m.

Former Sevilla manager Ramos knows Garcia well from his time in La Liga, and has long admired the player's ability to create as well as score goals.

But the forward's arrival is not dependent on Berbatov or Keane leaving the club, although Spurs are aware of the interest in both players from several clubs.

One of the clubs interested is Liverpool, and manager Rafael Benitez confirmed on the club website: "Keane is one we're looking at. We were in contact and we will see now."

However, BBC Sport understands, despite reports to the contrary, that Keane has not asked for a transfer and that Spurs are likely to price the Reds out of a bid.

Instead, some of Tottenham's spending will be financed by the departure of a selection of fringe players, though reports that the White Hart Lane outfit are set for a wholesale exodus are wide of the mark.

The likes of Anthony Gardner, Young Pyo-Lee and Hossam Ghaly top the exit list, but Spurs are insistent that they are not looking to sell any first-teamers - including Berbatov, Keane and Aaron Lennon.

Tottenham fly to Spain on Thursday for a pre-season training camp with negotiations over player purchases and sales set to continue while they are away.

Thread title is a bit premature.

Deal hasn't been even close to finalized.
