Ahead of the much anticipated North London derby this afternoon, Spurs boss Martin Jol has suggested that he could go down as one of the great Premiership managers.
Tottenham have had a fairly average start to the season for a club with mid-table aspirations, but for a club that has invested heavily in getting into the Champions League, things couldn’t have been any worst.
Not only are their problems on the field, there’s trouble behind the scenes too, with the board rumbled in their attempt to quietly find a replacement for gentle Jol.
But perhaps with his neck being measured for the noose, Jol has come out fighting and has attempted to convince fans, but more importantly the board, that he can be a great manager.
When asked of his opinions of opposite number Arsene Wenger, the Dutchman responded with a different answer.
“He must be one of the best ever, certainly in England. With the same continuity, I will do the same. That is what I have said all along,” he told the Daily Star.
Of the season so far, the manager admits things haven’t gone as planned, but insists there’s still time for a turnaround.
“We haven’t been on a level playing field so far this season but we’ve had three or four big players out,” he continued.
“If Arsenal had players like van Persie, Gallas or Toure – probably their best player – out, then they would have had a problem.
“At the end of the season you can make conclusions and for me that is the only time you can make a judgement on my team.”
