I don't believe it for a second. He'll have to lose a lot more games for his job to be in trouble. He's taken a very inconsistent Spurs side and put them in the top 5 for 2 seasons in a row and I believe we will be fine this year. Remember we have not had good starts to the campaign the past 2 years. Levy just said that Jol has his support. They're just trying to stir up some crap. It's all good unless we lose a bunch of games now.

Tottenham boss Martin Jol's job remains under threat because he has lost the confidence of several top officials at the club, BBC Sport understands.

Sevilla coach Juande Ramos is in line to replace Jol, although the Spaniard's agent has denied links with Spurs.

BBC Radio 5live football correspondent Jonathan Legard says some officials are not sure Jol can deliver regular top-four Premier League finishes.

Spurs lost their first two matches this season but beat Derby 4-0 on Saturday.

On Monday, Ramos' agent Alvaro Torres denied there had been any talks with Tottenham, despite Spanish press reports claiming that the 52-year-old coach met with Spurs officials at the weekend.

Both clubs said Ramos' appearance at a Spanish hotel was a private matter and Torres said the meeting was with a friend and had "nothing to do with football".

Jol came under pressure after the two losses - to Sunderland and Everton - in the first four days of the season following a £40m summer outlay on players.

One bookmaker suspended betting on Jol's departure on Friday but Spurs have insisted they are not negotiating for a new manager.

Some fans also believe it is too soon to make a decision on Jol's future after only three Premier League matches.

Daniel Wynne of the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters' Trust confirmed: "It's far too early to see how the season will go.

"Jol has taken us to fifth twice, which is better than any other manager, and has been backed in the summer with his signings."

Ramos has a contract with Sevilla until 2008 and was linked with the vacant post at Manchester City before Sven-Goran Eriksson was appointed at Eastlands.

Berbatov row sparked Jol's Spurs "whispers"

Martin Jol's position at Tottenham became shaky after an amazing row over Dimitar Berbatov last week, it has been revealed.

The Sun says Jol stunned club chairman Daniel Levy last week by wanting to sell his star striker.

And it was Jol's astonishing outburst which prompted Levy to sound out Seville coach Juande Ramos about taking over at White Hart Lane.

Matters came to a head when Jol hauled off last season's 23-goal top scorer Berbatov during the 1-0 opening-day defeat at Sunderland.

Berbatov reacted angrily to the decision, prompting Jol to seek a meeting with Levy on the following Monday to demand the Bulgarian hitman's sale.

Jol argued Berbatov, a £10.9million signing from Bayer Leverkusen last year, was not a team player and had to go.

But Levy, who has already rejected a bid from Manchester United for the 26-year-old player, insisted that Berbatov is staying.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has told under-fire manager Martin Jol that his job is safe but has warned him he wants to see Spurs in the Champions League.
Levy said in a statement: "We are an ambitious club and we have discussed our expectations with Martin.

"For that we need our management standards to be of the highest quality so that we can compete with the best.

"Martin has confirmed to me that he feels he is equipped with a squad and a determination to take the challenge."

Jol and his assistant Chris Hughton met with Levy and the rest of the Spurs' board on Tuesday.

"We had a full and frank conversation," Jol told Tottenham's website. "I fully understand the ambitions of the club - they are the same as the supporters.

Dantchev added: "Martin Jol is one of the people Dimitar has a very big respect for and he is not a player who can permit himself to make problems for the manager.

"The manager is one of the reasons that Dimitar came to Tottenham. They have a very good relationship."

Berbatov was said to be unhappy following his substitution after 77 minutes of his team's defeat at Sunderland on the opening day of the season.

But Dantchev said: "If he was not happy it was because they did not have a good result and his job is to help the club win games.

"They discussed the situation but it is football matter, it is normal."

Its just stupid by spurs, thats why they will always fail. Keep jol ffs, he is a good manager.

Look two 5th place finishes is a great record, only missed champions league by 1 game in his first season. He is also bringing through young players and young english players, not many of the top 4 teams or even the teams around spurs are doing that.

He deserves to be there. I think though he will be gone by the end of the season and with Ramos contract finishing in summer, he will definally come in.

Levy would take Ramos in a heartbeat if he is available. The dissatisfaction with Jol isn't really based on the first two matches of the season; it is cumulative frustration at bizarre tactical choices that has been building for more than a year, as frequently chronicled by the press.

Ramos works for the second nuttiest president in Seville, but still one of the top five or six crazies in Spain, and is no doubt frustrated over the fact that the club cannot hang onto the likes of Alves. Spurs' position in England is not that different from Sevilla's in Spain, but the financial resources available are significantly greater.

There also aren't many/any "bigger" jobs available right now; it will take Calderon at least three weeks of disasterous performances in la Liga to start thinking he made a mistake with Schuster.

I am not at all certain that Jol genuinely has "[his] own ideas as to players [he] want[s] and tactics [he] wish[es] to follow". It is the apparent absence of such a plan (at least from this distance), that should causes concern.

England is attractive to continental managers because it still generally affords the possibility of a great deal of personal control over team building with large amounts of cash. There are very few continental clubs that can provide both, which is why the likes of Lippi and Capello have spoken about being tempted by England.

Given that I don't see any of the top four Premier League clubs having an opening for Ramos in the next two years, Spurs may be the best he can do if he definitely wants to come to England. If he just wants to be in the G14, he could get Doll's job at Dortmund in 15 seconds.

Anyhow, Spurs have screwed things up yet again. The worst possible outcome was that they would let Jol out to dry like this and then pretend as if nothing had ever happened.

From the latest press reports in both England and Spain, the most likely outcome of this now appears to be that Jol will be given until the end of the season. Should Tottenham not qualify for the Champions League, he will be gone, and Ramos will be appointed, assuming that he doesn't get a better offer in the interim. There is significant talk of him going to Atleti, but I'm not sure that he would consider that a better deal. Barca or Real Madrid would be a different matter.

It's amazing that Spurs want to get rid of Jol. Ramos has done fantastically well at Sevilla, but sacking Jol now seems to go against their whole long-term strategy and it seems like something Freddie Shepherd would do. They've let Jol blow £17m on Bent, they have a huge injury list and they have three points out of nine. From an outsider's point of view, it's difficult to understand why they would sack Jol now after all the talk of slowly developing a top 4 team.
