Aston Villa are reportedly set to make an initial £8million bid for Tottenham and England striker Jermain Defoe.
Defoe hit 18 goals for Spurs in league and cup last season, but now appears to be fourth-choice striker at White Hart Lane.
Boss Martin Jol has shelled out £16.5million to add Defoe's England team-mate Darren Bent to his attacking options, and Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane also appear to be ahead in the pecking order.
Villa have already spent big this summer with the arrival of midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker from West Ham for £8.5million.
But owner Randy Lerner is prepared to make more funds available and boss Martin O'Neill is hoping to invest the majority of it in a new striker, according to the Daily Star.
Spurs are expected to hold out for around £10million before considering the sale of Defoe, 24.
