Spurs set to snap up striker Bent
Quote:
Tottenham are set to complete a deal to sign England striker Darren Bent from Charlton, BBC Sport understands.
The 23-year-old turned down a move to West Ham last week after the Hammers had agreed a £17m fee with Championship side Charlton for his services.
Bent will instead move to Spurs, even though their valuation of the player is some way short of the Addicks' after they had a £13m bid turned down.
The two clubs are believed to have reached a compromise on Wednesday.
Liverpool were also interested in Bent, but they have instead turned their attentions to Atletico Madrid's Spanish striker Fernando Torres.
If Bent had decided to join West Ham he would have rejoined manager Alan Curbishley, who spent £2.75m to bring the striker to Charlton from Ipswich two years ago.
Bent turned down a move to Upton Park in the hope of Spurs or Liverpool making a move for him. When Spurs capture their man, they may allow Jermain Defoe to leave White Hart Lane, with Manchester United and Aston Villa linked with the 24-year-old.

he may want to play for them but I doubt he will start very often. Spurs have Berbatov, Keane, Defoe and Mido. Mido is most likely to leave as he said it was the biggest mistake he made (going to spurs). Defoe is a decent back up to the great partnership of Berbatov and Keane. If this deal goes thro it will be imo at least similar to the sidwell, because I doubt he will play/ start a lot of games, unless the 2 first choice strikers are injured at the same time, and their are other clubs who want him where he would be guaranteed a first team place.
[EDIT:] It would be better for spurs to spend that money more wisely on positions they actually de need to strengthen.

this deal is most likely to go thro cos it seems Bent wants to leave Charlton (duh!) and there doesn't seem to be any other team willing to pay that much for him.
Also 17mill for Bent, when Henry went for 16mill
tbh I never really rated Bent so I cannot see what the fuss is all about but I don't like to see players fuck up their careers, so if I were him I would try and move to another big club where he might get some games.

Not a bad signing for Spurs but it means they have a ridiculous number of strikers now, plus £17m for Bent isn't good value for money.

I'm obviously not going to complain if it happens but I agree with you guys. I mean that's a hell of a lot of money and we should be using it on our defence and even on strengthening the midfield. I don't know what the logic is. It's a crazy amount of money, but he is very young and they could mould him into a future Spurs star so I'd rather spend the money on a player like that than guys like Vieri who are almost done.
I think either way it's ok. If it goes through there are upsides. If it falls through then it's ok too. We have more than enough strikers.

He is a good option to have as he does have pace.
But still alot of money for a 3rd or 4th choice striker.

It is an intriguing choice. Not really sure what the logic is other than them feeling he is an asset for the long term and maybe they know something about Mido and Defoe that is going to happen soon.

Spurs seal record Bent deal
Quote:
Tottenham have completed the signing of Darren Bent from Charlton in a new club record £16.5 million deal.
The England international has agreed a deal "up to six years" at White Hart Lane after agreeing personal terms and passing a medical.
Bent has been expected to leave Charlton ever since their relegation from the Premier League last season.
The former Ipswich man came close to joining West Ham earlier this month before he turned down the move at the eleventh hour.
Tottenham made their move for Bent and they have lured him to North London as Martin Jol continues his policy of snapping up the best young English talent.
Bent was delighted to seal the move and he is excited at the challenge of playing for Spurs.
"Tottenham have a lot of young English players and it's a young squad, it's a squad going forward and that's the direction I wanted to take," Bent told the club's official website.
"They seem to be getting better and better every season and I would love to be part of that.
"It helps a lot that I know a few of the lads from England internationals and I'm sure they will help me settle in.
"It's exciting times for me and the club, hopefully I'll show what I can do at Tottenham and we'll go on to win things."
Jol was happy to land Bent and believes he will prove to be a valuable addition to the squad.
"Darren’s strength is his stamina. Normally players will make runs three or four times in 45 minutes, he will do it all the time and if you manage to play balls behind the defence, he will be there. That’s what I like about him," said Jol.
“He has pace, he links play well and can see a pass - he can exploit the space and play as well.
“He knows Spurs is the place to be and that’s something to be proud of.”

Think about it this way. It's much better deal to sign Bent for £16.5M than Torres for £27M.I can't believe how stupid the prices is on players these days but clubs pays the price anyway.

Defoe will join Mido at the Spurs exit door once Bent is bought
Quote:
Tottenham will listen to offers for Jermain Defoe as soon as they complete Darren Bent's signing from Charlton.
Spurs hope to tie up a four-year-deal for Bent worth an initial £13m in the next 48 hours despite officials at The Valley looking to bump up the price.
And once Bent is landed, the Daily Mirror reports Spurs will let Defoe go if they receive a bid of around £12m for him and hope Liverpool can be enticed into making a move.
While Defoe, 24, wants to stay at White Hart Lane, chairman Daniel Levy believes the England striker and his advisors are ignoring the offer of talks for a new contract worth £30,000 a week.
Spurs have also been linked with Manchester United striker Alan Smith, he and Bent taking the places of Defoe and Mido whose move to Fulham collapsed this week.

Manchester United striker Alan Smith could also join at White Hart Lane after snubbing a £6m move to Middlesbrough.

that would be even more stupid.
TBH I cannot see how Bent will fit in to the system at Spurs. If they spent £16.5 for a back up striker then they clearly are stupid. with 16.5 mill they could have got a decent CB or CM or even a left winger.
According to transfer fees
Bent > Henry
£16.5 mill > £16 mill
