Default Keane signs new five-year deal with Tottenham

Quote:
Tottenham striker Robbie Keane has signed a new five-year contract, which commits him to the club until 2012.

The Republic of Ireland forward scored 22 goals last season, bringing his total in a Spurs shirt to 84 since joining from Leeds in August 2002.

Keane, 26, made his 200th appearance for Spurs in the final game of the season against Manchester City at White Hart Lane.

He said: "I have felt really settled and happy at Spurs and that is probably one of the reasons I have played the best football of my career here.

"It is an exciting time to be at the club and I am looking forward to even better seasons ahead."

Chairman Daniel Levy said: "Robbie has been an influential part of our club for five years and this further commitment, on the part of both him and the club, is a recognition of that. He is an individual who is loyal and professional and we are delighted he will be with us long term.

"The key to retaining top players is to agree long-term contracts. We have now done so with several of our existing squad, extending the contracts of Aaron Lennon, Michael Dawson and Tom Huddlestone, as well as having contracted newer players on long contracts, such as Dimitar Berbatov and Didier Zokora."

Nice. He has been on fire for us and it's great to keep him especially because who knows how long Berbatov will stay at us and resist moving to a bigger club that is challenging for the CL.

well despite the goals, I still believe that Berbatov is the one key guy that makes the team right now. Defoe can come in for Keane and still do well, but Berbatov does so much more than just scoring and he dictates the pace of the game. His vision and relaxed (sometimes slightly lazy) style seems to give us some confidence. I do agree with you though that Keane has been amazing for us and that he is without a doubt one of our most valuable players.
