Feyenoord thrown out of UEFA cup
Quote:
Tottenham's Uefa Cup opponents Feyenoord have been thrown out of the competition by the European game's governing body.
The expulsion relates to an incident on 30th November last year when Feyenoord fans rioted at Nancy's Stade Marcel Picot forcing police to use tear gas.
Spurs had been scheduled to travel to De Kuip for the first leg of their Round of 32 clash on 15th February, albeit with suggestions that the game was to be played behind closed doors.
But a Uefa appeals body has taken a strong stance and revealed the decision from its Nyon headquarters on Friday afternoon.
Feyenoord were recently fined by Uefa for the behaviour of supporters during their group stage clash with Blackburn which took place just a week before their trip to France.
Uefa will meet on Monday to discuss the ramifications for Spurs.
Martin Jol's side will either receive a bye to the next round or face the fourth-placed team from Feyenoord's group Wisla Krakow.

I predict Spurs have to meet Wisla Krakow instead.A walk over seems not fair to the other teams in the competition.

I agree. We should have to play them. I'd rather win properly and advance than have to get a lucky ticket like this.

I hope so aslong as the boys don't think the same way otherwise we shall get smashed.
If we get a bye we get a bye it'll be good for some of our injured players but I'd prefer to play.
Not overly fussed to be honest.

Looks like we're not going to know for a week what the story is. It's a bit rough on Spurs really because they are in a lot of different competitions and face a tough schedule. It does look like the bye is a strong possibility though.

Spurs handed UEFA bye
Quote:
Tottenham have been given a bye into the last 16 of the UEFA Cup, subject to a possible appeal by Feyenoord to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
The Dutch club were kicked out of the tournament following crowd trouble earlier in the season against French side Nancy.
Spurs were due to travel to Rotterdam on February 15 but will now go straight through to the next round where they will play Braga or Parma.
Tottenham are likely to seek compensation for the gate-receipts and television money that would have been earned in the Feyenoord matches.
Manager Martin Jol said before the decision was announced: "If I am honest, I would take a bye. Hopefully, we will get some compensation but maybe other people will think differently."
A statement from UEFA read: "Tottenham have received a bye into the UEFA Cup round of 16 following the exclusion of opponents Feyenoord from the competition."
UEFA's other option was to order Spurs to play Wisla Krakow, who finished behind Feyenoord in the group stage.
While Spurs will lose revenue from gate receipts and television money, they gain prize money for getting closer to this season's final, in Glasgow.
Martin Jol's men also move a step closer to ending their eight-year wait for a trophy, the day after their hopes of reaching the Carling Cup final was dented by Julio Baptista earning Arsenal a 2-2 draw in the semi-final first leg at White Hart Lane.
It gives Jol's men more recovery time in their hectic schedule, although it offers a spare week for the Barclays Premiership clash against Everton which requires rescheduling.

End of the day put your club in Tottenham's position and you would be welcoming the bye.
UEFA stuffed up but hopefuly our boys enjoy the rest and have time to think about what they have done this season and how they are going to acheive the way they should be.

I'd rather have to play in every round to win it.

You might get it next year and we shall see your position on the whole thing with all the injuries and burn factor come into it.
As I said we didn't ask for this it just happened I was hopping we would play the team that previously got beat but that's not the case so I'll take it in my stride.
