Tottenham have launched a €10 million (£6.5 million) bid for Celta Vigo's Nene, according to Galician sources.

Spurs sporting director Damien Comolli attended the match with Atletico Madrid and is believed to have discussed a deal with his Celta counterpart Felix Carnero.

Nene is aware of the interest from the North Londoners, who were beaten at home by Newcastle United on Sunday, but has refused to comment on his future.

The Brazilian wide man scored in the 3-1 defeat to Atletico and has hit the net five times this term.

After playing for Santos, Mallorca and Alaves, the 25-year-old could be tempted by a move to the Premiership.

Spurs have been looking for a left winger for some time although Steed Malbranque has been filling the position since recovering from injury.

Celta Vigo winger Nene claims any transfer business is up to the club but Celta have denied receiving an offer from Tottenham.

Sports director Felix Carnero has confirmed his Spurs counterpart Damien Comolli was at the weekend game with Atletico Madrid but denied any discussion over the Brazilian.

"It is certain that somebody from the English club was at the ground but nothing else," Carnero stated.

"Formally, we have not received a proposition."

Any deal cannot take place until the South American obtains Spanish citizenship and, although plans are well underway to achieve this, it would appear that Nene is more of a long-term target for Martin Jol.

"I am very happy at Celta," Nene told his official website. "But it is good knowing that an English club is interested in me.

"I must remember that my contract does not end until 2011 which is the reason why my exit is going to depend on agreement between both clubs.

"I do know little of the subject but also last year, when I was in Alaves, it was spoke about interest from England. I did not have the passport then and I do not have it now.

"In order to be able to play there, I need to be an EU citizen or to play with the Brazilian team for some years. It will be necessary to hope.

"In football, you say one thing today and tomorrow it changes.

"To play in England would not be bad for me but I am not going to think about that now."
