At least for an evening it was like 1976. The sun burned down from a cloudless sky, butterflies flittered softly across freshly cut Hampshire fields, browning torsos replaced anoraks and wellies and dehydrated footballers took drinks on the field, whilst Tottenham secured a thoroughly deserved 2-0 victory over Chelsea.
A rather disappointing crowd of 2,600 witnessed a game that, albeit, lacked goalmouth action, but offered quality and quick passing movements.
For Chelsea, the man mountain Jiri Jarosik played as if he was on a world cruise however, whilst up against the industrious Michael Browne, one cannot help thinking that he had boarded a dredger. Lassana Diarra, a clone, both in play and stature, of Makelele, did little to suggest that he is ready to make the big step up, whilst Wayne Bridge, obviously struggling for fitness was made to look ordinary against the frequent forages of both Aarron Leenon and Phil Ifill.
Ifill it was, who opened the scoring after 31 minutes, cutting inside a stagnant Bridge before firing left foot into the top right hand of the net.
Throughout Lee Barnard, the lone Tottenham attacker, never stopped running, always making himself available and it was he who set up John Jackson for the second goal on 68 minutes.
Having won yet another aerial battle with Pettigrew, Barnard turned and coolly laid the ball into the path of Jackson, who with struck an unstoppable shot past Pidgeley.
Thereafter there was little to trouble either keeper, indeed only the local Number 3 bus driver was forced into action, as a hopelessly wild shot from Jarosik sailed high and wide into road, all leaving Tottenham with their 2nd second win of the season, Chelsea struggling and the bus driver with a £40 mitre ball
