Perry Boys - Ian Hough (account of football casual culture in the 80s focused on United's perry boys)
The Hanging Garden - Ian Rankin (standard crime novel)
Wouldn't reccomend either TBH.

FC UNITED OF MANCHESTER, variously described and derided as 'brave rebels', 'irrelevant outsiders' and 'a right bunch of dicks'. Living testament to that peculiarly Mancunian talent for gazing at the world in all it's wonder, thinking for a minute, and then muttering "Nah that's bollocks. This is how we'll do it..."

The Dark Tower - The Drawing of the Three by Stephen King.
Weird, but good reading.

Thermopylae: The Battle for the West
As the title suggests it is about the Battle of Thermopylae but it is also about the whole that particular Greco-Persian War. Good book, interesting read. If you saw the film 300 thought it was a bit rubbish but wanted to know how much of it was true (or thought to be true) then give this book a read. It's quite surprising how little of Frank Miller's story is original and how much is either true or long standing myth/speculation around events.
If you like reading about history, reading about the Greco-Persian Wars or just the Spartans alone is really interesting.

The early films are based on the books; later films use the same titles but are only loosely based on the book, or not at all and the later films have had novels written around them by other writers. I like the Fleming Bond books.
Currently reading Death in Venice and other stories by Thomas Mann.

The original Ian Fleming Bond books (which came before the movies, as Ben said) are quite interesting and probably different from what you'd expect. So far I've read Casino Royale, Live and Let Die, The Spy Who Loved Me, and From Russia with Love. They're much darker and much stranger than you'd expect if you've only seen the movies (especially the recent ones). The writing is also much, much better than you may expect-- it's sometimes excellent in fact-- but Fleming is also prone to the occasional dumb metaphor (I'm thinking of a passage where someone's hands on a casino table were compared to "pink crabs"...).
Also be warned that they are very much a product of their time, with a level of sexism and racial stereotyping that was culturally acceptable at the time but is rather embarrassing by modern standards.
As for what I'm reading right now... I'm bad about reading, I'm usually halfway through about three books at once. The one that I will probably finish first is a novel called The Savage Detectives by Roberto Bolaño. It's not (yet?) about detectives at all; it's about the last two proponents of a doomed underground literary movement in Mexico. It's extremely melancholy in small, everyday ways. I don't like to recommend things until I've finished them, but so far this has been brilliant.

definatlify the sexisim is wrong in modern times but it works great with the novel and flemings way of being very discritive in his surrondings and background is what makes him a great author
