Four In A Row: Diego Is 'PLayer of the Month' For December

It was this season's fifth 'Player of the Month' award and for the fourth time it was a Werder player who took the honour. With more than half of the votes going in his favour (51.3%), Diego took the award for the third time himself in his relatively young Bundesliga career. The Brazilian international shook off the threat of Christian Pander (Schalke 04, 35.2%) and VfB Stuttgart's matthieu Delpierre (13,5%).

Diego's most likely arguments for taking the award were his performances in particular in Berlin and Frankfurt. The number 10 gave Werder the 1:0 lead in Berlin from the penalty spot and had a vitalpart to play in the half dozen goals which thr Green-Whites scored against Eintracht, providing Werder's 2:1 and scoring the 6:2 himself. The result of all this is that the 21 year has picked up an amazing 18 scorer points from just 16 Bundesliga appearances, consisting of eight goals and ten assists.

Diego's December award follows Miroslav Klose making the running in November, picking up his prize before Werder won the 'Winter Championship' with a 2:1 win against Wolfsburg. The young Brazilian took the award in August and in October whilst Jan Schlaudraff from Alemannia Aachen too the September title. Diego and Miroslav Klose are now hot on the heals of Bayern Munich's Lukas Podolski (who has taken four awards) with three wins each.

Brazilian playmaker Diego was voted the best player during the first half of the Bundesliga season in a Kicker magazine poll of 270 team mates and league rivals.

Kicker said on Tuesday 49.6 percent had voted Werder Bremen's Diego, 21, as the best performer of the first half, well ahead of his team mates Miroslav Klose in second (32.7 percent) and Torsten Frings (4.1 percent) who was third.

Klose, a striker, and Hertha Berlin's Marko Pantelic are the league's top scorers with 10 goals each. Diego, an attacking midfielder, is fourth with eight.

Bremen, who have benefited greatly from Diego's move to Germany this season from Porto, lead the Bundesliga with 47 goals in 17 matches.

Robert Enke of Hanover 96 was voted best goalkeeper in the first half with 37.1 percent ahead of Bremen's Tim Wiese (24.9 percent) and Borussia Dortmund's Roman Weidenfeller (12.2).

Diego scored a goal but Bremen were humiliated at Stuttgart, as they lost 4-1.

Diego is a wizard, very talented midfielder, Bundesliga didn't have one for some years. He scored but his goal didn't help at all.

Most Bayern fans I've spoken to, said they would ask Hoeness to sign him as we need a playmaker, but I'm not sure if he would fit in.

Look at Bremen, they play with 3 working players that give freedom to Diego.

It's a team effort, you can't rely on one player to put you over the hump.

If you ask me, I would take that risk and sign him.
