Bremen eye Baros and Carew
Werder Bremen are considering a double summer swoop for strikers Milan Baros and John Carew.
The Bundesliga outfit are keen to add firepower to their squad after attacking injuries in the middle of the season exposed a lack of strength in depth.
Bremen were eliminated from the last 16 of the Uefa Cup by Rangers as their threadbare squad was highlighted as they struggled to threaten at Ibrox in the first leg.
And manager Klaus Allofs has confirmed he is eyeing a move for Lyon forward Baros, who is currently on loan at Portsmouth, and Aston Villa striker John Carew.
"We are considering the possible signings of players like John Carew or Milan Baros," Allofs told SportBild.

I don't rate Baros a lot.. but I sure do rate Carew a lot.
He's a great striker, would be a huge signing for Bremen.

Please not Baros. He played great at the EC 04 but since then he played crap.
Carew on the other side would be really great. But he plays in England and Werder can't offer higher or even the same wages as Aston Villa. But we have the better perspective so maybe we will be able to sign him. Would be really great.

Wome comeback this season?
Frank Baumann, Sebastian Boenisch and Peter Niemeyer didn't take part. "There are no news concerning these players. We don't expect them back within the next two days", coach Thomas Schaaf explained.
But the coach was delighted to have Pierre Wome back after a lenghty absence. Wome had complained of groin problems in pre-season and couldn't train since July.
He came back for the second half of the winter-break friendly at Hajduk Split, only for the problems to reoccur.
Wome has been doing rehab abroad before returning for individual training on April 14, and he was clearly relieved to be back in full training.
"We won't rush things. We'll wait and see how he copes with the stress", Schaaf commented.

Bundesliga, Matchday 30 | PREVIEW
Karlsruhe – Werder Bremen
For so long a Uefa Cup spot didn’t look beyond the reaches of newly promoted Karlsruhe, but a dip in form following the winter break has seen them drop down to tenth place.
That however, will be seen as a success by many at the club, as at the start of the season, they probably would have taken Bundesliga survival at the end of the season. KSC brought to an end a run of six games without a win last week with a 1-0 win over Duisburg.
Werder Bremen need a win in order to retain their grip on second place. Thomas Schaaf’s side have won their last three and must be gutted that they allowed Bayern to pull so far away from them having finished level on points at the half way stage of the season.

Werder midfielder in line for return
Daniel Jensen, who has been back in full team training for almost a week now, is fired up for his return to the pitch, having been kept out for three weeks with a muscular injury.
This weekend could mark his return, when Werder travel to Karlsruhe. Jensen himself is optimistic: "I feel really good, everything is okay and the muscle is doing very well too, explained the Danish international, who had been one of the most vital elements in the Werder side prior to his injury.
Baumann ruled out
Whether or not he will fill the gap left in front of the back four by injured captain Frank Baumann is indifferent to the midfielder: "I am really not bothered about what position I play in, the only thing that matters is that I can get back out on the pitch as soon as possible.
The one thing that is clear though, is that a replacement for Frank Baumann needs to be found. The 32 year old midfield man confirmed on Wednesday that he will definitely not be ready in time to play this weekend.
Only three players sidelined
Baumann is still suffering from the effects of a ligament injury which he picked up against Hansa Rostock: "It's getting better slowly, but it is getting better. The battle for starting places has taken on a new dynamic as the season comes to a close.
With the exceptions of Frank Baumann, Sebastian Boenisch and Peter Niemeyer, trainer Thomas Schaaf will have his full squad available to him - a situation which has proven something of a rarity this season.

Karlsruhe 3-3 Werder Bremen
A superb game of attacking football at the Wildparkstadion, the home side will be the happier of the two sides after securing a point against a dominant Werder Bremen.
The visitors wasted numerous big chances, while KSC took theirs with ice cool precision to earn their point.
The home side took a surprise lead on 15 minutes through Sebastian Freis after Werder had dominated the opening stages. The away side were busy claiming offside when Hajnal played Freis through on goal, and the midfielder kept his nerve before coolly slotting past Tim Wiese.
Werder duly got themselves back on level terms after 23 minutes with Diego getting his name on the score sheet. Tim Borowski came into the area only to see his shot blocked by Timm, but the Brazilian was on hand to hammer the loose ball into the goal to equalise.
An end to end game then produced a third first half goal on 29 minutes and it was the visitors who grabbed it. Borowski passed to Özil, who let fly with a first-time shot which flew past Markus Miller and into the back of the Karlsruhe net.
The second half was to prove just as exciting and the home side got themselves back level on the hour mark with Freis bagging his second with an unbelievable goal.
He ran half the length of the pitch, and beat three defenders before firing into the net past Wiese. The game was then turned on it’s head when on 67 minutes Karlsruhe went ahead for the second time in the game.
Iashvili crossed from the left wing with a pinpoint ball to Kapllani, who fired past Wiese with his right foot to score his first-ever Bundesliga goal.
Werder refused to give up and were rewarded four minutes from time when Boubacar Sanogo got on the end of a lofted pass from Diego and only had to apply the finishing touch at the far post.

I agree with both you and trim. baros has only done two things of importance that comes to mind.
1.Giving the parried shot that fell to kanu in the FA cup semis
2.Winning the penalty to get to the Fa cup semis
Carew has been very good for villa this season. scoring goals and setting up goals

Frings back, Diego breaks off
Torsten Frings returned to training with the first squad at Werder Bremen on Tuesday.
The 31-year-old midfielder has recovered from the injury to his right ankle that kept him sidelined for last weekend's game at Karslruher SC, and was able to complete a full session.
Diego has to break off
That was more than could be said of Diego. The playmaker had to end training early because of a twinge in his left thigh. "He has a slight muscular problem, but I'm working on the assumption he'll be fit for Saturday", head coach Thomas Schaaf said, in reference to the upcoming encounter with Energie Cottbus.
Club captain Frank Baumann has been in solo training since the start of the week. Baumann has been out since incurring ligament damage to his right ankle following a tackle by Hansa Rostock's Tim Sebastian two weeks ago.
Boesnisch progressing
Sebastian Boesnisch, who is still recuperating from a muscle tear, is also making progress. "It's going well, but I'm not quite there yet", said the 21-year-old defender, who hopes to be back training with the full squad soon.

Schaaf hopeful about duo
Werder Bremen midfielder Diego missed team training on Wednesday, taking part in a light workout with Sebastian Boenisch instead.
The side's Brazilian playmaker had to break off training on Tuesday after feeling a twinge in his left thigh.
Head coach Thomas Schaaf said the injury was "nothing serious...but he'll be completing a rehabilitative programme today and tomorrow."
Schaaf is hopeful that Diego will be able to return to full training for the final session on Friday. Meanwhile another player eyeing up his comeback is Frank Baumann.
After more than two weeks out with a right ankle ligament injury, the club captain is set to take part in squad training on Thursday. His prospects of rejoining the squad for the game against Cottbus remain up in the air, but, says Baumann, "I might make it".

We have a great manager and some great players, we are not yet a great tean though.
Oliver, Bayern have been far from dominant in the last 2-3 years. Stuttgart won the league with a team that had only one play who IMO would make the Werder team of the last few years, Mario Gomez.

Stuttgart has more good players than Gomez. For example Delpierre or Pardo.
Also being a top team in the Bundesliga doesn't mean you will win a title every year. Schalke is one of the top teams in the Bundesliga and they haven't won the League for 50 years now. Bayern not dominant in the past three years? From the last three season they won the double in two of them. Fpur years ago it has been Werder who won the double. Like Oliver mentioned it is extremly hard to win the Bundesliga if you are not Bayern. Bremen is the team who is on third place when it come to how often a team won the Bundesliga and we only won four times. In the all time league table we are on second position behing guess who? Right Bayern München.

I know they have more than one good player. but i'm talking about players that could make it into the Werder team. Werder have had far superior players, far more money and far more experience, and still won nothing.

Far more money? Far more experience?
It would be great if we had far more money than Stuttgart but we only have a little bit more than them. We even have less money than Schalke or Hamburg. If we can keep our financial development up we will have a solid base to do some bigger spendings in five years.
We don't have more experience we have one of the youngest teams in the Bundesliga. Which is one of the main reasons why we failed this season. Plus we need a good and solid DM who is not injury prone. That is why I hope we will sign one in the summer. Targets are De Zeeuw, Makoun and Mavuba and Katsouranis. But this is getting OT if you want to continue this discussion then let's do it in the Werder Thread.
