Lightbulb Post match thoughts...

Great game, great win, fantastic start of the season!

On paper, this was our real formation:

............................Kahn
Lahm......Demichelis....Lucio......Jansen
....Hamit.........v Bommel....z Roberto
............Ribery.............Schweini
..........................Klose

We started off well, pressing Werder and trying to create chances, but then Werder scored the first goal on quick counter atack. Awsome pass from Borowski to Fritz, Rosenberg couldn't get to it, but then shit head Lucio cleared the ball to Borowski's right foot and Tim scored. No chance for Kahn.

Werder kept pressing and searching for the 2nd goal, Bayern suffered a bit for 10mins.. Until we got the first goal. Great cross from Lahm, Klose with a nice header saved by Wiese and then Schweini scored on the rebound. From that goal, Bayern completely dominated the match and in just a few minutes after, we scored the 2nd goal. Nice step up by Lahm and Klose, Hamit picked up the ball and delievered a fabulous left footed strike, great goal, no chance for Wiese. Then Bayern quickly got the 3rd goal, great pass from van Bommel to Jansen, he crossed it to Schweini, who missed the shot but then came Ribery and finished it off. In just 10mins, Bayern scored 3 goals.

From there, we just controled the match until the end, but we still got a goal on the 2nd half. Nice play by Klose, shipped the ball over Wome who tried to clear it usign his hand so the ref pointed for the stop. Ribery stepped up to take it and he scored. Until the end, we controled possessio, made 3 subs, one of those being Sandro Wagner who made his Bayern debut. Werder Bremen didn't trouble Kahn much, who only made 1 save during the entire match, long range shot from Leon Andreasen.

Ratings:

- Kahn -> 6 _ Didn't have much to do, can't be blamed for the first goal and mae a good save in the 2nd half.

- Lahm -> 8 _ Good defensively and great offensively. Made good crosses, gave us width on the rigth flank, good performance.

- Lucio -> 5 _ Shit head Lucio was to blame on the goal. His poor clearance turn out ti be an assist to Borowski.. The guy is one of the best tacklers in the game, but he has always been poor on clearances.

- Demichelis -> 7 _ Sold performance, he was very calm, no one got passed him. I think he proved to Hitz that he should start.

- Jansen -> 6 _ He missed to block Borowski's pass to Fritz that led to the first goal and even though he gave a lot of width to the left flank, making the assist on the 2nd goal, I think his crossing was very poor and he lots quite a few balls.

- van Bommel -> 6 _ Mark wasn't really noticed on the match, but made a great work as defensive midfielder and he was the one that started the 2nd goal. Put in good tackles and some nice passes, good game.

- Ze Roberto -> 7 _ He was the playmaker we lacked last season, he orchestrated the midfield today, made some good forward runs, tackled a lot and made some nice passes, glad he is back.

- Hamit -> 9 _ Amazing! Great performance today, I was very impressed. He didn't lose a single tackle, made some great runs, dribbled a lot, shot a lot, scored an awsome goal, Man of the match for me.

- Schweini -> 8 _ He is back! Great match today, was very active in the first half, made some nice passes, linked up well with Ribery and also scored the equaliser. He silenced all the critiques.

- Ribery -> 9 _ Fantastic debut, scored two goals, good runs, good passes, nice crossing, linked up well with Klose. Very promising.

- Klose -> 7 _ Meh, he was a bit disappointing. He did headered the ball that led to the first goal and he won the penalty, but he wasn't really very focused, was caught offside loads of times.. Not the best of matches, but he'll get better once Toni is back. I don't fancy Klose as lone striker.

Ottl, Lell and Wagner played a few minutes in the 2nd half, didn't do much.

Default Reaction to Bremen v Bayern:

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge: “We mustn’t forget that both teams are still in pre-season training. We played extremely well, especially between the 15th and the 45th minutes. We all saw the huge potential in this team. But we’re not going to read too much into the result. We know we still have a lot of work ahead of us if we want to hit our targets.“

Ottmar Hitzfeld: “I was surprised at how quickly we reacted to going a goal behind. The fact we played good football didn’t surprise me. Obviously, we’ll be boosted by the win and it’ll be easier for us now. All the new players showed they’ve settled at Bayern. They have quality, ability, and can fill a number of positions.”

Mark van Bommel: “We didn’t play badly, but it wasn’t outstanding either. There were a few good moves. But we’re not at 100 percent yet. We have some injuries and we’re not all fit. But that’ll improve with time. What we’ve achieved today is no guarantee for the future.”

Hamit Altintop:
“We won today because we kept it simple. Our aim was to enjoy ourselves and carry out the boss’s instructions. We have plenty of big-name stars, but we played as a team.“

Thomas Schaaf (Werder coach): “We played well for the first 20 minutes, but we were rocked by conceding a goal, and we never recovered. We were too passive, we were always too late to the ball and we let Bayern play. It turned into something like a practice match for them.“

Klaus Allofs (Werder Director of Sport): “We didn’t play well. I was impressed with the way Bayern got going after they went a goal down. They’ve put together a good team. We have some catching up to do.”

Default 1:4 Bremen No Match For Bayern In League Cup

Werder Bremen suffered a heavy defeat in their first competitive game of the season. In Dusseldorf, last season’s third placed side were beaten 1:4 (1:3) by FC Bayern Munich in the quarter final of the Premiere League Cup. The north German’s took the lead through Tim Borowski after just nine minutes. Schweinsteiger levelled things up on 24’ before Altintop (27’) and Franck Ribéry (35’) extended the Bayern lead before the break. After the break the Green-Whites had little to offer the 51,000 crowd at the LTU Arena against a superior opponent on the day. Shortly after the start of the second period, Ribéry made it 1:4 for Bayern from the penalty spot.

Werder with a lightening start

Werder were forced to go into this game missing eight of their regular players, the latest two exemptions being Carlos Alberto, who is still awaiting permission to play from the Brazilian Football Federation and Hugo Almeida, who was having problems with an ankle injury. On the positive side, Per Mertesacker was passed fit to join Frank Baumann at the heart of the defence. In comparison to the Liverpool game, Pierre Womé replaced Christian Schultz on the left side of the back four and Jurica Vranjes started in place of Carlos Alberto. Bayern were also without the complete squad of stars they have put together. Luca Toni, José Sosa, Lukas Podolski, Valerian Ismael and Willy Sagnol were all missing for diverse reasonsIn the starting eleven, Marcell Jansen, Hamit Altintop, Zé Roberto, Franck Ribery and Miroslav Klose all made their competitive debuts for Bayern.

The Green-Whites made the brighter start to the game. Klose did pop up in front of Tim Wiese’s goal after just 40 seconds but the German international was standing in an offside position as he collected a pass from Schweinsteiger. Bremen then took over proceedings, leaving their opponent coming out second best with an aggressive approach and determination to win every ball. Thomas Schaaf’s men received an early reward for their efforts. Tim Borowski picked out Clemens Fritz with a pass and the unmarked full-back drove a pass across the face of the Bayern goal, which Markus Rosenberg couldn’t quite reach. FCB centre-half Lucio attemted to clear the danger from a lying position but only managed to set up Borowski who had advanced forward and the German international slammed a bouncing effort into the almost empty net – 1:0 for Werder.

Bayern find their feet, and the net

The rivalry between the two clubs, in the first game since the transfer of Klose ,was all too clear on the day with a collection of both niggly and intentional fouls in a game that Werder still controlled. Bayern’s equaliser came as something of a shock. Klose rose unmarked to powerfully head a Philipp Lahm cross goalwards which Wises spectacularly, but not convincingly, parried and Bastian Schweinsteiger was on hand to head the loose ball home (24’). The Bavarian side were now back in the game and ready to turn it in their favour. Hamit Altintop gathered the ball in an anything but dangerous position and unchallenged the new signing let fly from 25 meters out, burying past a chanceless Wiese into the top right corner (27’).

The fans got to see an attractive game of football in the first 45 minutes which was by now flowing only in one direction, much to the joy of the Red-White contingency. Werder got only one further sight of Kahn’s goal in the first half. Vranjes won a foul, after the Green-Whites probably should have had a penalty following a challenge from Jansen on Kevin Schindler, but the chance was wasted and the bulk of the play again swung in the opposite direction. Constant Munich pressure paid off in the 35th minute. Jansen got the ball back across from the by-line, Schweinsteiger miss-kicked but cruelly the ball fell perfectly for Ribéry who slotted home with his left to make it 1:3. Before the break, Ribéry, Altintop and Klose all had chances to finish Werder off but took ‘only’ a two goal lead into the break.

Andreasen and a wasp test Oli Kahn

The second half saw the tempo drop out of the tie as the energy levels of the players began to waver. Bayern presented themselves in very organised fashion, confident and rarely forced into error. Werder were willing but the strikers were being cut off from any midfield supply by a well drilled defence. Oliver Kahn was enjoying a relaxed afternoon which was only disturbed by a drive from Leon Andreasen from 40 meters out (67’) and a wasp sting (77’). In the meantime, the impressive French debutant Ribéry had made the score line 1:4 (54’), converting a penalty after Womé had handled in the Werder box.

Having been eliminated from the League Cup, Werder will continue their pre-season programme with two further friendly games before the Bundesliga kicks off in three weeks time. The first real test for Thomas Schaaf’s men will come on August 4th though when they travel to ‘Giant-Killers’ Eintracht Braunschweig for the first round of the DFB Cup. Bayern Munich will take on VfB Stuttgart in the League Cup semi-final on Wednesday, 25.07.2007 at the Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadium.

Default A Night To Forget - Werder Lose 2:1 In Paderborn

New striker Boubacar Sanogo made his debut in the Green-White on Tuesday night but it was to prove a night to forget for Werder Bremen in Paderborn. In a friendly against the second division side Thomas Schaaf’s men were beaten 1:2 (1:1). Sanogo, who was presented as a Werder player on Tuesday afternoon, gave his new side the lead after 19 minutes but the Bundesliga side failed to build on their lead and found themselves back on level terms when Timo Röttger equalised for SC before the break. In the 54th minute, Nebojsa Krupnikovic gave the home side the lead from the penalty spot and the Black-and-Blues held on to win 2:1 in front of 4,126 spectators at the Hermann-Löns-Stadion.

Werder make three changes

Compared to the side which started in the League Cup against Bayern Munich, Thomas Schaaf made three changes to his first eleven. Christian Vander and Carlos Aberto replaced the injured Tim Wiese (back problem) and Leon Andreasen (calf strain). In addition, Boubacar Sanogo made his debut for his new club in place of Kevin Schindler. Paderborn had a very determined eleven starting the game containing a number of players with Bundesliga experience and with ten minutes on the clock they got their first sight of goal but Christian Vander was equal to Timo Röttger’s 15 meter drive.

Werder had their first clear opening on the quarter hour as Tim Borowski got on the end of a long pass forward but instead of shooting he attempted to feed Markus Rosenberg but had his pass blocked and the chance was lost. From the interception, Paderborn launched an attack and were unlucky not to take the lead as Röttgers effort just missed the mark. Considering the flow of the game, Werder’s 19th minute lead came as something of a surprise and it was one worth seeing (available on WERDER.TV from Wednesday). Veteran goalkeeper Alexander Bade attempted to throw the ball deep into the midfield but somehow managed to launch it just a few meters. With the SCP side pushed forward, the ball fell to the feet of Boubacar Sanogo who accepted the gift and coolly lobbed the stranded keeper – 1:0 for Werder.

Best phase, bitter end

The Green-Whites were inspired and began their best phase of the game, creating a couple of very good openings. The best of them: Vranjes was sent on his way down the right and squared the ball to Rosenberg who hammered a shot goal wards which more struck the keeper than did the keeper make a save (26’). The best phase of the game ended in a horror scene for the Green-Whites. Torsten Frings took on a throw-in and turned – and then was forced to kick the ball back out of play to allow the physio to treat his knee. To the applause of the crowd Frings came back on but not for long. The midfield engine had to be substituted with the nightmare of a torn cruciate ligament hanging over him. Frings returned to Bremen immediately with press-director Timo Polster.

To add insult to injury, Werder couldn’t hang on to their lead. The visitors lost the ball and on a quick break and SCP took the opportunity to equalise with a Röttger shot into the far corner – 1:1(41’). “Paderborn were active and got the ball forward well”, analysed Werder coach Thomas Schaaf after the game and continued: “They took their chances well.” That was to continue after the break but firstly there was a strong period from the Green-Whites. The coach made three changes during the break and his side created openings through Schindler and Artmann. From another stray Schindler effort, Sanogo slid in and hit the far post with his shot. Werder’s power play ended with them going a goal behind. Schüssler broke into the penalty area in a spring duel with Peter Niemeyer and was then brought down by the defender. A penalty was the understandable decision and Krupnikovic slotted the spot kick neatly into the bottom left corner (54’).

Critism from Schaaf and Allofs

Werder had nothing more to offer than a wasted cross by Harnik (67’) and a misplaced free-kick from Vranjes which sailed high over the bar (79’). Tired, abulic and with a plethora of individual mistakes Werder created more chances for their opponents than themselves which were luckily, for Schaaf’s men, not taken. Vander got to show what he can do, making a strong save from Röttger yet again. Another positive point for the Bundesliga side was the debut performance of Sanogo who impressed until his substitution in the 58th minute.

There was little else for Schaaf and his team of staff to be happy about in their sixth friendly game and fourth defeat in a row. “We were physically not in good form and mentally not quick enough We were totally harmless and naive in our tackling. We have been working hard and it was clear to see that we weren’t fresh. We’ll have to get through this now.”

Tim Borowski summed the match up saying “We had no bite”, and team manager Klaus Allofs agreed: “We’re not playing well at the moment and there was no disputing that tonight. That’s not acceptable and we’ll have to discuss that in the coming days. It’s been a rocky pre-season prearation because we find ourselves every morning counting the numbers of players who can still play and the result is players playing in unchartered territory. That doesn’t excuse this performance though. That was disasterous, there was no will, no determination or ambition. He defeat is not a tragedy but the way we lost was. You can only play football when you have fun doing it, that was not the case here. That’s not enough to meet the demands of the club and the players themselves.”

With two and a half weeks to go before the Bundesliga gets underway, Allofs is not about to begin stressing himself: “We are not going to panic, we need to talk about things”. Werder’s next chance to improve their position is on Friday, 27.07.2007 at 6pm against FSV Mainz 05.

They still haven't wake up since Bayern thrashed them.

Good debut for Sanogo though.

Default A silver lining in a dark cloud

Bliss has a name at Werder Bremen: Dr. Heinz-Jürgen Eichhorn. On Wednesday, the physician picked up the phone to tell Klaus Allofs the good news.

"Torsten Frings does not have a torn ACL!." Werders sporting director breathed a sigh of relief. "Finally some good news!"

In the 1-2 defeat in the friendly against SC Paderborn, Frings went down and had to be taken to hospital for an examination. An initial MRI indicated the ACL was torn, which wouldve meant a painfully early end to Frings season.

Wome out

Dr. Eichhorn stated that the ligament in the right knee is "only" slightly injured. Frings will thus only be out six weeks, instead of six months.

Hes not the only player at Bremen on the injured list. The Werder pros have been keeping medical staff busy these days. In need of treatment is Tim Wiese's back, Hugo Almeida's ankle, Petri Pasanen's achilles tendon, Patrick Owomoyela's thigh and Aaron Hunt's knee. Add to the list Pierre Wome who has to undergo an operation and will be out for the foreseeable future.

"Top players need to step up"

That Frings hasn't suffered the second ACL tear of his career is very good news to coach Thomas Schaaf: "Finally some good news. We haven't had that privelege lately." Schaaf sees a silver lining in a dark cloud."

This twist of fate has given Schaaf a needed boost to motivate his squad, something he has to do as the Bundesliga season will begin without Frings. The midfielder will also be absent for the Champions League Qualifications. "Now is the time when our top players need to step up." said Allofs.
