Bundesliga, Matchday 31 | PREVIEW
Werder Bremen – Energie Cottbus

With the title going to Bayern, Werder just have the little challenge of fending off Schalke to secure the runners up spot in the Bundesliga. For so long it seemed as if Thomas Schaaf’s side would give the Bavarians a run for their money till the end of the season, but a poor start to the second half of the season has put paid to their title challenge.

Their 3-3 draw with Karlsruhe last weekend brought to an end a run of three successive victories, and they now hold second place courtesy of a better goal difference than Schalke. If they are to avoid having to enter the Champions League at an earlier qualifying round, then victory over a struggling Cottbus is a must.

Energie took a huge step towards securing their Bundesliga survival last weekend with a last gasp winner in their relegation six-pointer against Hansa Rostock. How important Dimitar Rangelov’s goal will prove to be may only become clear at the end of the season, but it could well have saved them from the drop.

Going to the the Weser Stadion and taking points from Werder will be no easy task but stranger things have happened.

Werder Bremen 2 - 0 Energie Cottbus

66' [1 - 0] M. Rosenberg
79' [2 - 0] H. Almeida

Quote:
Werder Bremen 2-0 Energie Cottbus

Werder Bremen have opened up a two point lead over second placed Schalke after a 2-0 win over Energie Cottbus at the Weser Stadion.

Second half goals from substitutes Markus Rosenberg and Hugo Almeida saw the home side to victory, and sees Cottbus back into the relegation mix.

Werder Bremen ran out deserved winners against Energie Cottbus with second half substitutes Markus Rosenberg and Hugo Almeida grabbing the all-important goals, which have opened up a two point lead over third place Schalke.

The Green and Whites are now in pole-position to finish as runners up to Champions Bayern Munich.

First Half

Werder started the first half on the attack with Mesut Özil firing in a shot from 25 meters. His effort was deflected, but Tremmel in the Cottbus goal was able to save. Naldo then thumped a free kick narrowly past the right hand post to make it two good efforts within the first three minutes.

The first five minutes saw Cottbus coming under tremendous pressure from the home side. Jensen fed Özil with a superb through pass on five minutes but once again keeper Tremmel was on hand to parry.

The first Cottbus attack of note came after ten minutes when they countered through Sörensen, but the Dane’s shot was blocked.

Tremmel in the Cottbus goal was certainly being kept busy, and an exquisite pass from Fritz to Jensen on 13 minutes led to another Werder opportunity, but the Danish midfielder saw his first time effort well saved by the Energie keeper.

Cottbus were then very lucky not to concede an own goal after Vragel da Silva almost deflected a Werder free kick into his own net, but he was thankful to Tremmel for once again saving the day.

With 25 minutes gone the Werder pressure seemed to abate and Cottbus managed to get themselves more into the game particularly in the midfield.

On 35 minutes, Cottbus striker Branko Jelic was forced off with a nasty head wound, and he was replaced by Vailjevic meaning that Sörensen had to act as a lone striker.

Just before the break Gerhard Tremmel was once again the saviour for Cottbus. Tim Borowski played a tremendous pass to Boubacar Sanogo, who shot from close range, but Tremmel was on and to save with a reflex save with his foot.

Second Half

After a fine first half, Werder very nearly allowed Cottbus in early in the second period. Angelov sprinted almost half the length of the field before being denied by Tim Wiese, who cleared his effort for a corner.

Werder trainer Thomas Schaaf then made a double change up front with Rosenberg and Almeida coming on for Klasnic and Sanogo. That move then paid instant dividends after 67 minutes.

Petri Pasanen sent Frings into the penalty area with a superb pass. The German international midfielder turned on the ball and crossed inside to Rosenberg, who beat Ziebig before firing an unstoppable shot into the left hand corner.

Five minutes later and Swedish striker Rosenberg was again on the attack, but after beating his marker on the edge of the area, he was denied by keeper Tremmel after turning and firing in a dangerous shot.

Werder’s other substitute then repaid the faith put in him by trainer Thomas Schaaf by scoring the home side’s second goal 11 minutes from time. Tim Borowski played a one-two with Rosenberg which by-passed the Cottbus defence with ease.

Borowski then fed Almeida, who was wide open at the far post and the Portuguese striker had the easiest of chances to make it 2-0.

Werder Bremen: Wiese, Fritz (Owomoyela 78), Naldo, Mertesacker, Pasanen, Frings, Jensen, Borowski, Özil, Klasnic (Rosenberg 56), Sanogo (Almeida 56)

Energie Cottbus: Tremmel, da Silva, Radeljic, Cvitanovic, Ziebig, Rost, Angelov, Rivic (Rangelov 68), Skela (Papadopulos 84), Sörensen, Jelic (Vasiljevic 35)

Schaaf: Patience Paid Off

Werder Bremen trainer Thomas Schaaf was glad that his side remained patient against Energie Cottbus and was rewarded with a 2-0 win with goals from second half substitutes Markus Rosenberg and Hugo Almeida.

The win sees Werder open up a two point lead over third place Schalke, who were held at home by Hannover.

Werder dominated proceedings but couldn’t find a way through until Schaaf sent on Rosenberg and Almeida for Ivan Klasnic and Boubacar Sanogo.

“We got into the game very well from the very beginning, but had difficulty achieving anything despite our dominance” Schaaf said.

“Therefore I am glad that it all turned out well in the end. Our patience paid off” he added.

Cottbus trainer Bojan Prasnikar was left looking to the future for the points his side need to guarantee Bundesliga survival.

“The win for Werder was fully deserved” admitted Cottbus trainer Bojan Prasnikar. “We made things difficult for ourselves and couldn’t get out of our defence, so it’s not unusual that we didn’t score.

“Unfortunately we didn’t make the most of the two counter attacking chances we had when it was 0-0. Now we have to get the points we need to survive against other opponents” .

Bundesliga, Matchday 32 | PREVIEW
Hamburg – Werder Bremen

The Nord-derby on Wednesday pits second place Werder against fourth place Hamburg in a game that could have a huge bearing on who qualifies for the Champions League and who has to settle for the Uefa Cup.

A 3-1 win away at Hansa Rostock on Saturday brought an end to HSV’s four game goal drought and sealed their first win in six games. The recovery may have come just at the right time with both Stuttgart and Bayer Leverkusen hot on their tails in the battle for European qualification.

Werder can pretty much secure second with a win over their Northern rivals but will have to do so without the services of key midfielder Torsten Frings. Having returned from injury the German international picked up an unnecessary booking on Saturday against Cottbus to rule him out of this potentially key game.

Werder have won two of their last three games at the HSH Nordbank Arena so will be confident of adding to their victory from earlier this season at the Weser Stadion.

Hamburger SV 0 - 1 Werder Bremen

Hamburg 0-1 Werder Bremen

Werder Bremen emerged triumphant from the Nord-derby against Hamburg with a solitary second half goal from Hugo Almeida decisive.

A feisty first half ended goalless, but Werder accumulated four yellow cards as Hamburg struggled to make their slight dominance count. They were made to pay early in the second half with Werder scoring five minutes into the second half.

Markus Rosenberg won the ball on the edge of the box from Reinhardt and laid it off to strike partner Hugo Almeida. The Portuguese striker hit an unstoppable shot past Frank Rost into the right hand corner to open the scoring.

Bundesliga, Matchday 33 | PREVIEW
Werder Bremen – Hannover

Werder Bremen are guaranteed a top three finish this season, but they will still want to fend off the late challenge from Schalke for the runners up berth.

Thomas Schaaf’s side came out on top in the Nord-derby against rivals Hamburg on Wednesday, but it came at a cost with a number of suspensions incurred after a spate of yellow and red cards. The victory over HSV wasn’t pretty, but that won’t matter if Werder can beat Schalke to second place.

A top eight finish for Hannover is very much on the cards as they look to finish the season strongly. Unbeaten in their last five games, Dieter Heckings's side may prove a tough nut for Werder to crack this weekend.

Quote:
Baumann Taking Nothing For Granted

Werder Bremen midfielder Frank Baumann has insisted that his side can take nothing for granted as they look to clinch the runners up spot in the Bundesliga.

Werder face Hannover at the Weser Stadion on Saturday knowing that a win is vital with Schalke lurking two points behind them in third.

That two-point lead was maintained on Wednesday with Thomas Schaaf’s side winning the Nord-derby against rivals Hamburg 1-0 at the HSH Nordbank Arena.

Captain Baumann however has said that things could quickly change and has urged his team mates to approach the game with the right focus.

"The Champions League race has not been decided" the 32 year old.

"It's simple maths: there are still six points to be won and we just have a two-point lead. We'll do all we can to defend it."

Baumann however will be missing as he has to serve a one-match ban this weekend.

Croatian striker Ivan Klasnic though is confident going into the match with Hannover this weekend.

"We have performed very well of late, he said.

"Schalke can only hope for a slip-up and at the same time they have to win their matches. That is not any easier."

Werder Bremen 6-1 Hannover

A second half blitz from Werder saw them defend second place and inflict a massive defeat on local rivals Hannover with a 6-1 thrashing.

It was the home side that scored the opener at the Weser Stadion with Portuguese striker Hugo Almeida scoring after 14 minutes. Naldo won possession in midfield and strode confidently forward through the Hannover defence. Faced with keeper Enke he squared the ball unselfishly to Almeida, who had an easy task to stroke the ball home.

The provider of the first goal then scored the second after 27 minutes to put the home side in control. Diego sent in a free kick from the right and Naldo got up ahead of Vinicius to nick the ball past Enke and into the net.

Thomas Schaaf’s side sealed the three points with a third goal after 73 minutes with midfielder Tim Borowski scoring in his final home game for Werder before his summer move to Bayern. Diego’s free kick saw Ismael and Lala get in each others way and Borowski took advantage to volley home from close range.

The second half then turned into a complete rout. Diego missed from the penalty spot on 80 minutes but in the follow up the Brazilian was able to get the ball back into the area where Ivan Klasnic rose to head home Werder’s fourth.

Two minutes later it was 5-0 with Markus Rosenberg latching onto a Klasnic pass before he prodded the ball home. Then on 87 substitutes Özil and Hunt combined well to score the sixth of the afternoon for the Green and Whites. Hunt applied the finishing touch to a move that completely by-passed the Hannover defence.

Into injury time, and Hannover scored a consolation goal through Szabolcs Huszti. The away side were awarded a penalty after Frings fouled Stajner, and the Hungarian saw his effort saved by Wiese, but he managed to head in the rebound.

Schaaf: Everything Clicked Today

After watching his Werder Bremen side trounce local rivals Hannover 6-1 at the Weser Stadion, trainer Thomas Schaaf was understandably delighted with his team’s performance.

With the race for second place still ongoing with Schalke, it was important for Werder to win today against a Hannover side who were themselves looking at an outside chance of qualifying for Europe.

A 6-1 win was the perfect result for the Green and Whites, particularly as Schalke won their game against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Hugo Almeida and defender Naldo fired the home side into a 2-0 first half lead before four second half goals blew their Niedersachsen opponents away.

Second half goals from Tim Borowski, Ivan Klasnic, Aaron Hunt and Markus Rosenberg had the home fans celebrating another goal fest at the Weser Stadion and Hannover had to be content with an injury time consolation from Szabolcs Huszti.

“Everything simply clicked today” Schaaf beamed. “The game was perfectly matched to the sunny conditions.

“Next weekend we have to make sure that we take care of things ourselves. We cannot look at what Schalke are doing, but we have to look after ourselves.”

Bravo! Being number 1 in the whole country is something though.

Who do Werder have in plan to bring in the summer? Any names linked with?

There is a new season coming :P

One offical transfer so far: Prödl

Not very much with some decent sources.
So far only Moreno the 20 year old young striker from Brazil.

But there are some positions on which it is pretty much for sure that there is another player coming. Another DM will be hired. Favourites: De Zeeuw(my personal favourite), Katsouranis, Mavuba and Makoun.

Another striker because Klasnic will most likely leave. Moreno, Berg, Cavenaghi, Carew and Baros(please not).

Also another LB will come because of Womes and probably also Tosics departure. Pinola, Schwaab

Also a replace for Borowski might be possible but we have Özil and Hunt. Bradley, Bajramovic

For sure is that a second goalkeeper is coming as no.2 behind Wiese. It will be for 60% Hain from Bielefeld.

Which would make the lineup look like this(with my favourites):

--------------------Wiese--------------------
Fritz-----Mertesacker-----Naldo---Pinola
-------------------De Zeeuw----------------
Frings--------------------------------Jensen
------------------Diego-----------------------
-----Cavenaghi-------Rosenberg---------

Also possible would be change of formation to the formation you are curently playing. The there would be a winger needed. My favourite for this would be Rothen.

--------------------Wiese--------------------
Fritz-----Mertesacker-----Naldo---Pinola
---------Frings---------De Zeeuw----------
Diego--------------------------------Rothen
-----Cavenaghi-------Rosenberg---------

Carew and Mavuba would be great transfers. I haven't seen De Zeeuw play, so I can't imagine how good he is.

Why is Tosic leaving, btw? Haven't satisfied enough?

De Zeeuw starts for Holland I think, he looked pretty decent in all Holland matches I watched.

Carew would be immense. Michael Bradley is a very good player, awesome goalscoring record at Herenveen
